I finally decided it was time to get back into a V8.

Found this MY06 HSV Maloo R8 Z Series 2. Been told its one of few that were special ordered in this colour which is Ignition. The colour looks awesome in daylight.
6 Speed Manual with all the R8 goodies....AP Racing Brakes, Leather Interior etc etc.

Have plans for basic mods so far:
Exhaust system.
OTRCAI
Mafless tune.
Lowering
Stereo

Loving driving it so far, but already had one mishap from some shit of a human....Spent the night down the coast last night and left the car in a carpark near The Grand. Returned today to found some **** has scratched it and failed to leave a note.

wow, that paint looks awesome! :goodjob:

That scratch is a killer though, hope it comes out alright. People seem to have no respect for other people's cars these days. I'm always wary these days with parking especially at supermarkets where people just throw their trolleys around and open their doors straight into other cars without a second thought!:vpo:

Cheers guys, yeah hopefully get the scratch fixed soon. But priorities have changed.......This thing is too fkn quiet, have decided full exhaust, OTR and Tune are a def must have.

Thinking bout going a full Stainless Twin 3 inch X Force system. Hi Torque have given me a pretty good price so far for it fitted and tuned. Just wondering how she's gonna go with the twin 3 system and still unopened....Anyone had any experience with that kind of set up?

Also went a little nuts with LED lights today.....Interior lights up like a christmas tree now. Just replaced the interior lights, Parkers and number plate lights with white LED's, looks wicked at night time.

Ah yeah Im prob gonna hold off on opening up the motor for a while at first, just wondering how if its gonna run ok with a large system and no engine mods.

With uploading... you need a Photobucket account which is free. Upload your pics there then copy the pics 'IMG Code' link and post it in your threads/posts here.

Here's the LED's... pics do them no justice, look blue but they're actually white. Def worth the $30 it cost me.

Hmmm I might have to find me some if these LED's.. The exhaust may b a tad big for now but if u are planning on doing more mods,it saves paying for two systems. Maybe leave the back muffler on to hlp with back pressure. I originally had a twin 3 mild steel on a unopend untuned motor an it was fine. How many k's u got on the beast

Can I ask, where did you get the LED's from - I am thinking of replacing the internal LEDS in my VE Sportwagon. Is it hard to do, anything other than just replacing bulbs?

Just look on Ebay mate. And its a piece of cake to do, the dome light I got was a 20 LED panel, it came with a heap of connections for it to connect into just about any light fitting.

This is the one I got: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120686451715&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT

hey mate nice machine, scratch is bullshit, humans are shit things :(

depending on what exhaust, with a mafless tune you should be pulling close to 280rwkw

mine pulled 272 with a maf tune, 2 hole stock airbox and stock cats, with the new cats in her new ide hope she would be pulling 275+

colour = win

Haha yeah she does feel incredibly slow compared to the GSXR.

After a deep rumbling sound. My old car had Pacemaker 4 into 1's with a DiFilipo cat back 2 1/2 system in Mild steel which had a pretty awesome sound with the 222/224 cam in it.
Wanting to go twin 3 inch mainly cause it seems to be the more popular system to go with, that and I'll prob look at supercharging at some point in the future.
Here's a couple of vids of the old ute...Loved the sound of this.

Found out some bad news about it the other day ( not totally bad with the way I think ;) ) All four rotors are down to legal limit atm which being the AP Racing kit...means super expensive.

So.......
This means I'll be upgrading :D Once the front pads wear out I'll most likely be putting some DBA 5000's on the front. Been told these will last longer due to the rotors themselves being made of a harder steel than the AP's. Other thing is whenever they wear out its only a fraction of the price to replace the rotor part of the kit.

Not sure whats available for the rear rotors, Can't find anything on the DBA site about replacements. Anybody know if there is any aftermarkets available for the rears?

Also with the pic in the previous post PM me if your interested in getting Pics done by Trav. From memory he charges $100 per shoot, Think thats about 15 pics.

Been a while since I've really done anything to this. Haven't really had a chance to with work etc, But have just bought a runabout car so things should start moving along with it.

Got some parts in the garage and in the mail on their way, some DBA5000's for the front rotors as the current ones are shagged!! also a pair of the Aeroforce guages from the group buy, and a Harrop Diff cover :)

Got some new wheels for it the other week and absolutely stoked with the result, still needs to be lowered but looks hot none the less. Running 20x8.5's up front with 245's wrapped on them, and 20 x 10's on the rear wrapped in 255's............Was gonna go 275's but the guards are yet to be rolled and definately wouldn't have had the clearance with 275's on...so that will come in the future. But as it sits, no clearance issues so far

Very nice ute mate, I've just bought a series1 in quicksilver.
I have a very similar problem... It's so ****ing quiet!!!
So hopefully this weekend i will fit up an exhaust.
I plan to start a thread also, once my post count gets up high enough.

One question, is the hard-lid on yours standard? Mine is very different, and has a ridiculous spoiler on it that i removed as soon as i got it home lol

Also what size tyres you got on the rear?

Tommy.

Haha yeah it is standard (get asked that fairly often), it's the series 2 version, don't see too many of them around, I was on the hunt for a series 2 mainly because of the series 1 having that dicky spoiler. People think the utes alot newer just because of it :s guess because it's similar to the VE hardcover.

ATM it's 20 x 10 rims on the rear with a 255/30/20 tyre on it. Could prob go wider in the same profile without much issue. Had the guards rolled yesterday as I found the rim was touching the outer guard, also touches the inner slightly but only when I go up my driveway which twists the car majorly and pushes the wheels as far as they'll go into the guards. But general around town driving I don't have any problems so far.

So , the DBA 5000 rotors you got are exactly the same as the AP racing being a 350mm rotor??, i remember ages ago my local pedders guy saying they didnt make the DBA 5000's in that specific size for people who have the AP racing brake upgrade. ?? but then i see you and "evman" have used these, so im thinking otherwise.

Sorry for the late reply but yeah the Pedders guy is speaking shit. DBA only make the 350mm rotors to suit the VZ AP Racing set up in the 5000 series. I think it's the 4000 series that they don't make a rotor to suit....but they do for the rear.

New rotors are on now and god damn they look good and pull up bloody hard!

Have definately found the problem which was just as suspected, big end bearing damage on a few of them and then 1 in particular that has spun. Anyway now to get into the fun part of the build......buying parts and selecting cam etc etc. Not sure how big I'll go yet, looking at just a mild set up as I still wanna be able to have it as daily driven.

Yeah I reckon a nice 402 with a cam in the low 240s (242/246) with a bit of lift (620) will be beautiful. You could go a bigger stick like a 260ish duration which is what Ive got in my 427, but it will be too big everyday. A low 240s cam will be as smooth as silk in a 400 cuber. Bit of attitude, make plenty of HP, will blow the tyres up whenever you want, but wont be too over the top.

Thanks mate, will def be alot more to come. Taking all the engine parts into my old work tomorrow to use the parts washer, then the block will be off to the machinist in about a weeks time. Was almost considering not going 402 at one stage last night after we inspected the bores to see they were in incredibly good condition for a 110thou km motor. Could still see the original machining marks in the bores.

The colour def gets alot of comments. Guys at work think its actually a newer car than 06.

In other thoughts, Im contemplating selling the 20's in favour of the original 19's (but paint them Black) Thoughts?

You can see why in the pics, it just really works :)

I love the stance it has with the 20x10's on the rear, only problem is without tubbing I just can't get decent width rubber in there. The rears atm in 255's (stretched) fry more than the old 245's on the 19's. So thinking 255/265 Federal Evo's on the 19's might be the go.

Suppose I could keep both, 20's for cruising round being pimp and 19's for the more serious spirited driving lol
Might look into getting the inner guard Tubbed a tad, only needs an inch at most! It's just the amount of twist that makes it touch the inner guard when I'm backing out my prick of a driveway.

Thats pretty good idea, and then if you have a flat, you wont have to get round on that pansy space saver

I have two sets of the R8's, one spare in the garage and the one on the car. I have being wondering if I should get one in black and find some SV6000 caps for it for a different look.... for now Im happy having a full set of spares.
Is it just a VZ thing that the wheels knock on full lock, Im sure thats what I get on the front left trying to turn sharply sometimes, never remember it being an issue on the calais and that was heaps lower??

Yeah prob will be, will try getting some wider tyres on the rear, gonna need them.

Here's a few more pics, just of a bit of cleaning etc, majority of the parts aren't to be used again, but I just hate picking shit up and getting oil and crap all over me.
Decided to go with a relatively mild cam for the motor (231/139 @ 113LSA). Block should be off this week to get honed etc then the fun of putting it all back together will begin.

Bit of an update, block is the engine machinists getting honed etc, rotating assembly is getting balanced, so possibly beginning assembly next week.

Pulled stock exhaust off today and struck a problem....the original O2 sensors, turns out whoevere fitted them cross threaded 1 of the 4.
Looking at replacing them totally but I have a few questions:
A. Will I only need the front 2 sensors and the rears won't be needed once tuned etc
B. Do the VZ require extension cables for the sensors when fitting aftermarket headers? (DiFillipos 4 into 1 in this case)

Cheers
Mark

Rears not needed and fronts will need extensions. You can try a thread file if they arnt too badly stripped or just replace them. And a dab of moly grease on the threads on installation makes them nice to remove for the next person ;)

Cheers Jezza. Yeah no chance of it being re-used, totally shagged the thread. Any suggestions on whether to go OEM or aftermarket replacements?

Haha nah couldn't find a 22, so used a pretty close sized imperial open ender and gave it a pretty good flogging with the rubber mallet to get it out.

Thanks mate.

Found something interesting from the machinist. Decided that I'd get the heads serviced while the block was in getting honed etc and turns out it was a good thing I did. Not totally sure what the problem was but what I was told is that one of the valve spring guides or something along those lines hadn't been machined properly from factory and they were very surprised that the valve spring had never bound up :s So thats all been sorted and apart from that the heads were in top condition....not bad for a 110k old motor. Also picked up some Whiteline engine mounts for it and probably going to go with either a Hurricane twin 3 inch system or the XForce.

Just to pick everyones head, Which O2 sensors will I still need? all 4 or just the 2 before the cats?

I just went through this dilemma, you will need the front o2 sensors as most tuners turn the rear off.

Are you using genuine or aftermarket. The O2 thread suggests that there are now some available aftermarket for the VZ series at a much lower price than genuine.

Ran it by another LS builder down here ( build race LS motors for boats ) and also confirmed you could use them again but advised to just check the thread first to see if it looked stretched at all.

Finally got out to the car today to do a few things, just fitted the RIP shifter and braided line....was easy enough to do since the box is sitting in the tray of the ute. Also gave the DiFillipo headers I got a bit of a clean up and some High temp paint, just need to grab a heat gun and give them a bit of curing.

Update.... Motor is back to the bare block again.....reason for this is we got a picture today of a almost identical build using the same crank and rods, Motor had lunched itself. Long story short...Owner of the vehicle decided to keep the factory cats even though advised to change them, Cats were blocked and falling apart in which some pieces of the cat have been sucked up into the motor and found its way down to the bearings and destroying them.

Won't have the same problem here since Im running a new full exhaust system, but what they've found is that because the Callies kit says that it doesn't require clearancing on the block because it is made to be LS specific which we checked etc with mine but we did notice that the heads of the rod bolts do come awfully close to the block (about a 1mm gap if that). Now with the motor thats just lunched itself, they believe that because its ended up spinning the bearing and allowing the rod a bit more play which has allowed it to come in contact with the block......and here's the result of that. NOTE: THIS IS NOT MY ENGINE!
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w148/hsvvt83/Photo15-06-1235520PM.jpg

So just to be on the safe side Scott has decided to not even run the risk of hoping a bearing will never collapse and has decided to pull it all apart again and clearance the block just so in the unfortunate/unlikely event that it does **** a bearing....the rod would still have enough room to move without touching on the block. Might be an idea for anyone using these same kits to do the same.

One thing we are unsure about is the oil pressure.....atm on idle when warm its sitting at 35psi.....Give it a rev over 3k and the mechanical gauge we've been using goes off the dial..100+psi. Anyone got any idea on what oil pressure I should be expecting? Atm its got the Morosso Pump with the high volume spring in it.

That's crazy high mate. From memory mine idles around the same but increases to somewhere in the 40s with revs. First thing I'd do is swap out the oil pressure sensor just to make sure it's not faulty. It's probably not but would be good to rule it out anyway.

Mechanical oil pressure says 100+ so won't be your oil sender I would be looking at the pump as the prob as they may have put to heavy spring in there and it won't bypass excessive pressure

On the road its pretty impressive. The torque is pretty strong from the word go, and the responsiveness is insane. One very happy man atm.

Hit the QldStreetCar Cruise for Charity 9 on the weekend out at Queensland Raceway, Was a pretty good day, plenty of cruising and lining people up to race. Also entered the Heads up sprints and managed to come 2nd overall in the V8 class.....Lost by half a bonnet length. All in all the car really surprised me how well it went.

Cheers bud, only downside I've found is I now get brake dust streaks coming out of the spokes and across the tyres when it rains haha

Loving the wheels mate. Whats the cost involved with the plastidipping?

clean wheels with wax and grease remover, spray wheels with plastidip, 1 can per wheel, a can being around $30
