guys i am pulling my hair out about the alternator in the wife's camry and the story goes like this.
2001 camry V6
1MZ-FE
alternator is a 4 pin unit
back mid 2010 the regulator died over the weekend so i wrangle up an alternator from the wreckers which has lasted till now but when this one has died there has been no charge light on the dash or anything but simply the car dying from lack of battery voltage to drive it.
now thinking it may have been a rectifier pulled the regulator from the wrecker alternator and put it on the original alternator and chucked it back on and no increase in voltage from 12.7 (had battery on charger, off when testing voltage).
hoping that would fix it and didn't i was starting to pull my hair out so i put the original alternator back in with its regulator, started in and what seemed like a bit of a dry squeel i shot some wd40 at it and the squeel stopped and i then checked the voltage and it was 14v and increasing, when it got to 15 i told the wife to starting turning everything on like a/c, stereo etc and then all of a sudden the voltage drops back to 12.7 and then i start pulling hair out.
theory was that with the original buggered regulator that yes it would over charge but prove that the rest of the alternator was ok but with the voltage back to 12.7 i'm lost and electrics really isn't my strong point.
what could the issue be?
