Hi guys

I had to remove my tub liner in order to get a small dent pushed out courtesy of some p#$%k that doesnt know how to open thier door or park properly. Anyway thought i'd post up some pics of what i found.

The marks you see are courtesy of holden. Obviously the task of removing the tub liner whilst installing a hard lid is far too difficult. This is the result of the metal shavings produced while drilling in the brackets and lock posts when the hard lid was installed. I really should have checked this earlier because at the time the hard lid was installed i called holden and made a complaint due to the fact whoever did it left all the metal shavings sitting in the tub liner. A brush or vacuum also must have been on the too hard list. :flipoff:

Anyway, rant over. Thought some of you guys might also like to check for this. Removing the liner won my own took at most 20min, with another set of hands i recon you'd have it out in 10.

Also can anyone recommend the best way of getting rid of the surface rust?

Thanks
Steve

I'd take it back to the idiot dealer 1st.

Super cheap: Rust converter + brush. You can get some stuff that leaves a sealing residue after it flashes off.
Either that or use some fish oil before you put the liner back in.

GPT: you'd trust them to touch your car again?

Nasty surprise.

I wonder if any other Ute owners who’ve had panel repairs carried out have encountered this.

Anyone with tie down rails anchored through the floor may want to think about it as well.

As far as taking it back to the dealer the car is now out of warranty. I wouldnt want it in their incompetent hands anyway!!

I took my tub out to assist with a paintless dent repair in the quarter panel and realised at that point regular removal of the tub and cleaning/ checking for rust might be a good idea say once per year. Utes used to carry sand etc are going to rub off the paint under there and they'll rust in a big way. Lucky most of us just use the utes as a two person car rather than a workhorse.

Get a product from auto one called Rannex, its a rust converter which will neutralize the rust, then spray some fish oil over the areas and in the cavities, wouldn't bother going back to the dealer, all they will do is say sorry.

Good luck Stevo

Another point of the interior of the tub area is the drain tubes that run from the little infills that are around the hinge area. They just run into the tray body under the liner. I have extended mine to run out the actual drain hole....
Too me thats an absolute fail on holdens behalf...
I would use underbody bitumen if you want to get rid of the problem ....just let it dry before fitting the tub liner back in.

Comes out just infront of the rear wheels. Found that Bunnings sells the right sized tube at almost the perfect length for about a buck a piece.

g'day bud, what size/OD is the tube and how much do i need? thought i'd ask before i take the liner out and to save a bit of time running around.

To be honest, i don't know. Pure guess would be around 3-4cms. If you go to Bunnings and have a look for this clear tubing you see in the photo's. It comes in pre-cut lengths of about 1.5m which is just a little bit longer than you need. Can't remember what section they were in but it'd be either gardening/ plumbing or maybe bathroom. They're like a 1.50 each. The bloody clamps cost more!

You'll also need some lube to get the hose thru the grommet and more lube and a lot of patience to get the grommet back in. If i remember rightly if found it easier to put them back in the opposite way (turned around, back to front.) from which they come out.

Cheers

well i did mine today and for anyone whos going to do it the hose sizes are as follows ; the factory short black hose is a stiff poly piece and is 18mm, the hose extension that you need is 20mm x 1mt approx x2, the same clear type as seen in the earlier pics, 2 hose clamps to suit. the grommit is a blanked off unit, all i did was put a cross cut in the centre and forced the hose thru (not much effort) then re-inserted the grommit again not hard. one thing i did notice though was the amount of dirt(mud) build up along the bottom of the sills in front of the rear wheel arch, cleaned it out , there was a surprising amount and hosed it clean. might pay to check that before you do anything, i'd say its being washed down there by those shitty drain hoses that holden scabbed out on. any way thats all

My guess is that dealers have been doing this for quite a while as I biought mine new in 04 and they did exactly the same thing on mine. Pointed it out and got the usual "sorry". Too many apprentices, not enough mechanics.
