Hi guys, as this is'nt a for sale ad I thought it would be appropriate here. Basically I'm thinking of selling my '08 SSV ute. I've never sold a car before so what I'm wondering is:
1) Stone chips on front bumper worth fixing for sale?
2) 6 months or 12 mnths rego best?
3) Go with private or straight up sale to a car yard?

Any advice would be appreciated as its a bit nervewracking thinking of what I should do to get a fair price but not spend unnecessarily on things that will see little or no difference in sale price.

Thanks guys.

In my experience

1) depends on mileage and price. If it's only done low mileage and you want top dollar then get them fixed. People expect cars with any sort of mileage to have a few stone chips and in fact some people get suspicious of more serious crash damage having been fixed if it is in pristine condition with a few kms on it
2) doesn't really matter as can be dealt with in the negotiation phase
3) definitely private if you can be bothered with the extra hassles!! You would probably :bawl: at the amounts you'll be offered by car yards.

Good luck!

The problem is, most people know what the car yards are offering, so dont expect to make a killing by selling privately - yes you will make more, but is it worth it?

I have been watching a couple of cars for the last 6 weeks - they have ALL dropped their prices, but are still way over car yard offerings and people aren't buying.

Here is a great example, nice car but asking price is about $15-20K over what a caryard will offer - http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=10376461&__sid=12F50490D023&__Qpb=true&Cr=10&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|1||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216 1246 1247 1252 1282 4294965530 4294964634 464 447 1622&SearchAction=N&PriceFrom=464&PriceTo=447&seot=1&tsrc=allcarhome&__Nne=15&trecs=103&silo=1011

I've been looking at new cars and my trade price today was actually not too bad. Still a lot less than I wanted but I get to keep most of the goodies on the car. If I sell privately then I will leave those things on but will be expecting what I want.

My issue is the hassles with waiting to sell.

Time is your enemy here, if you want a quick sale you'll make sacrifices with the price. If you're trading it in, different story. It's not so much what they are giving you for your car, but what the change over figure is on the "new" car.
Salesmen never quote absolute best price on cars as that gives them no room to move or negotiate. For instance, if they pay $10k for a $5k Magna but sell you a $20k camry for $25k then the margins are the same are they not ?
Stick to your guns on the money you want, or screw them down on the price of the new car. If they really want to sell you a car they'll go to good lengths to do so.
Privately yields higher prices but is also frought with danger as you have to entertain alot of tossers and time wasters with the added comfort of knowing that they also know where the car lives now :(

Thanks for the solid advice guys. I'm not in any hurry to sell it, just that I have a company ute for the last year now which I have pretty much free use of so I thought it was time to start putting together a house deposit. It kinda makes me sad to know my car is in the garage not being driven much. Yes the KM's are low, under 20k so I guess the next step is get her pristine and start the add campaign!!!!
Thanks again for the advice guys!!!:goodjob:
