Its hard to say mate, Ive only drove a turbo diesel one & i thought it went pretty good and they get great fuel economy. But the other being the petrol model with a turbo would probably have a bit more power it all depends on what your after.

If it was me i would go the diesel as my mum has one and i can say its a nice car to drive .

Only heard good things bout the turbo diesel, they go pretty hard too. Haven't heard anything either way about the turbo petrol, I'd suggest go drive em both, see what u like personally

I've driven the 1.4 turbo manual and it is a heap better than the 1.8 petrol . The diesel is supposed to pull like a train though.

Will your wife be happy filling up using a stinky diesel pump?

There are many options for you around the 30K mark.
The biggest issue is to approach the purchase with and objective view rather than subjective.

Ford Focus TDCi powershift.

Ford Focus XR5 would get very close, maybe an ex demo. I have driven one, performance is great but a little unrefined. Good bang for buck in a compact car.

Mazda MZR-CD

Mazda 3 SP25: Beutiful car to drive, fit and finish is close to perfect, drives awesome in manual, quiet and refined Is quite a nice drivers car also.

Volkswagen Golf.

There is heaps to choose from in the price range, just don't be subjective and only drive the Holden becuase of it's badge. You may just find heaven forbid another manufacturer has exactly what you want. Do yourself, create a list of every car that fits in the budget and specs and drive them all.

isn't the 1.4T 104kw and the TD 120kw with more torque. I thought I read the TD was quicker and uses less fuel. I would buy the TD in this car.

The OP asked for opinions regarding which engine to choose in the Cruze. I did not see him ask for opinions on other brands and models anywhere in his post.
I don't know how you are still on this forum Spoolin. It is blindingly obvious that you are here for one reason and one reason only, that is to push your anti-Holden and pro-Ford agenda, which you have done here since day one.

Oh not you again... I provided him with real options!
If you want to pidgeon hole yourself as a Holden owner, by all means do so, but please don't pidgeon hole me...I'm a lot more objective than a cretin such as yourself :)

FFS the OP asked a simple question and two people have managed to make it a personal battle not one page into the thread, this is why the forum has been going down hill. Get over your keyboard egos!

To the OP I have not personally driven the new series 2 cruze however from all the reviews i have read are that the 1.4T is not a performance engine but purely has enough for the A-B commute, they believe the engine is as good as that in the VW Golf - however the cruze is lugging around 1400kg+.
I cannot find a detailed review on the series 2 diesel which is meant to have got rid of the noise and initial lag that the series 1 had.
My advice would be drive them back to back and pick which one that suits, specially if they are the same price/speck!
I would also be interested in your review if you do drive them back to back

If I had to choose between the petrol and diesel Cruze I would definitely go the diesel. The petrol cruze is very under powered as I found out first hand when the dealer loaned me one while my car was getting work done. If I was unfortunate enough to own one I'd crash it into a cement wall just so I didn't have to drive it again.

A lots has been written about the petrol version and none of it good compared to the diesel.

I haven't had a chance to drive the auto series two but will in a few weeks.

The series one whilst a good car the only gripe I had across the range was their drivetrain. It was like the engine and auto didn't talk often lagging between shifts.", sometimes take off it lagged which annoyed people and working in fleet I heard this complaint a bit.

I am told that it has all been revised and is much smoother in the oz built one. If your not going new go for a diesel and make sure all the engine updates have been done as the trans I believe had it's shift points re visited.

You know what really sickens me... We have a fantastic small car built right here in Australia, yet we have people doing their best to divert people away from it and promote an imported product. Then we scratch our heads and wonder why manufacturing in this country is going down the shitter.
I don't see what is so superior about any of those cars on that list apart from on-paper figures and wank factors which are largely irrelevant to most people in every day use. Most of it based on perceptions and badge snobbery. I'm sure the Cruze will do most things just as well as any of those cars, if not better.
Not only should we be supporting our own economy, but if we want to be able to purchase Aussie made RWD Holdens in the future then we should be doing our best to promote the local product, because once manufacturing goes in this country it will be gone for good.
I'm doing my bit, I've already got 3 family members lined up for a new Cruze.

So what you're saying is possibly settle for a second rate car or a car that is tailored perfectly to your needs or setttle for an Australian built car that is made from imported products and the financial dollar goes back to GM head office?
That makes perfect sense...not.

The FACT remains Holden doesn't supply the best car for everyone, I simply pointed out there are many, many options availabe for that price point, it's called being objective which your little mind can't deal with, if you read what I wrote I came up with more than just Ford...
As I did, I narrowed my choices down to four different cars, three manufacturers and ended up with what suits me, no badge envy nothing, based on facts, figures and what made me happy, nothing to do with being narrow minded and blinded by brand loyalty.

I'll assume that you have asked a question here, if you are not willing to look at anything else than i would make sure you drive both of them and not take someone elses word for it as you may be very dissapointed with the purchase. There is another thread going at the moment on the S11 Cruzes so have a look at it. I drove a manual 1.4T petrol yesty and its gutless, boring and very unexciting to drive, it does have a good list of features on paper though.
