WHEN you by falkens 452 :flipoff:
i just fitted a new set of falken452 285x30 x 20
to the rear of the maloo and they are 10m narrower
(i laid them side by side on the ground ) then the 275 oem bridge stones the rim is wider then the wall they roll under from the rim
i should have fitted 305 to get back to the foot print i had
i thought the section width would have to be the same what ever brand
they look like 255 on 9.5 "rim
disappointed
and so far they dont have the grip of the bald bridgestones mybe there still waxy i hope

Yeah, I don't understand how that works either, a few years ago I parked beside my boss' Mercedes and noticed how much fatter the rears were on the Merc, when I read the tyre they were a 215's fitted to an 8 inch wide rim????????
And they were fatter than 245's on an 8 inch rim on my SSV ute, go figure!

Yeah when I bought my 20" Pentagons from east they had 275 FK452's on the rear 9.5" rims and they bowed in from the rim. I changed them to 285's and even though they were better, they could have been maybe 295 or 305....

well obviously they differ a lot from brand to brand which is a big piss of

Well I guess it is buyer beware and also they are half the price of the Bridgestones

I always thought it was relative to the rim/profile size.

So a 19inch rim on 275 rubber would look the same as a 20inch rim on 285 rubber??

There was a thread not so long ago discussing the Falkens, and the fact you go one increment up on them..

A few of the guys specified the 255's over the 245's for my car - as it gives you edge protection - and as an added bonus, fixed my speedo inaccuracy..

Very common. When ever I buy tyres I always ask for the actual width. I use the Nankang Ns2 and their 285 is good for 285 wide on the car. Grip in the straight line as good as 265 semi slicks.

yeah, with falkens you want to get one or two sizes (10-20mm) up from what you would expect or normally get,
they are a good tyre though, just annoying they cant make their sizes universal...

Nope - the 275, 285 etc refers to width in mm so it should in theory be the same no matter what brand you buy! It's the profile number that varies according to width and rim size.

275 Nitto Invo's are a good deal wider than 285 Falkens.

How the hell can they produce tyres as a 285 tyre which isnt 285 wide? WTF it doesnt make any sense and makes buying tyres almost impossible!

From Falken website...

285/30ZR/20 XL Section width = 279mm

275/30ZR/20 XL Section width = 267mm

245/35ZR/20 XL Section width = 245mm

It's always been a bit of a lucky dip, one brand just won't be the same as another.

Big giveaway with the 452 Falkens for me was they're not bulged at all on a 9" rim, very straight sidewalls.

ATOMIC MALOO R8

so would they run cooler with the side wall not flexing with the bulge ?

Not sure if there would be a noticable difference, we fitted tire monitors to my buds car with the Invo's but never ran them on the Falkens so don't have any data.

One thing I will mention on the 452's they're a HUGE improvement on the 451's for straightline traction and lateral grip in the Wet.

I was able to generate .95G's sustained no problems at all running a staggered set 265/285's on an 1800 Kg car.

It is annoying how the brands differ in size between each other.
My old Yoko 245's on HSV 8"s rubbed the front guards on full lock yet my Khumo 245's on a 8.5"rim with 3mm less positive offset don't rub at all.
I still have one of the Yoko's on my spare and the tread face is at least 10 maybe 15mm wider.
Next time might save up a little more and go back to Yoko's as they were a bloody good tyre but more than double the price of Khumo's.
No one ever seems to have Yoko Advans on special.

had Federal EVO595 in 275 and only rubbed when car was fully loaded and big movements in the road
current Falken 452 in 285 will rub with only me in car on big movements in road or even one a person in the rear with not so big movements in the road

Here are some comparison pics of one of my old Yokohama Advan 245's, now my spare and my current Khumo 245's.
Yoko tread comes in at around 220mm while the Khumo comes in at a tad under 210mm.
Yokohama 245/35x19

Khumo 245/35x19

Also notice the difference in side wall bag size with the yoko sidewall rim protector edge sticking out slightly past the rim and Khumo dead level with the rim.
Khumo sidewall to rim no clearence.

Yokohama sidewall to rim about 3-4mm

messure them from the maximum width sidewall to sidewall thats where most of them messure from, some might go by the tread width thats why there different

That doesn't work either as both the sidewall is fatter and the tread wider on the Yokohama than on the Kumho, so which one's measurement is the right one.
I remember a few years back trying to fit some factory VY SS wheels and worn bridgestone tyres to my VS wagon and the tyres rubbed the inner back guards.
I picked up some Continentals in the same size and they fitted, even brand new with full tread without rubbing.
So it seems it is a case of lots of research before rushing out and buying that expensive set of massive wheels and tyres if you don't want problems.
If I could find some Yokohama advans for around $300+ I would have them back on my senator in a flash.
At $500rrp each for yoko's I just can't see $250+ each extra performance and value over the Kumho @ $220-240each.
Might just go bigger Kumho next time.

I've always found that parking 3 feet from the kerb is good "rim protection" :)

I've had various brands of tyre with a built up rubber lip on the sidewal that is supposed to provide this protection but the missus always seems to prove that they don't do sh*t if you're determined enough to find the kerb with your wheel.

I agree that rim protection is limited at best and then only on smooth concrete at very slow speeds.
I was just using the rim protection part of the tyre to show the difference in width between the 2 different makes of tyre of the same size, in this case Yokohama and Kumho 245/35x19 tyres mounted on the same 8.5" rims.

The width is measured at the sidewalls not the tread. Looks as though the Yoko's might be a little wider than the size they state. The Falkins are a bit weird though, on the recommendation of this forum I bought 285s for the rear and 245s for the front and they fit the same on the rims...

Oh and for what it is worth the 275s on my 4wd have only 225mm treadwidth.

hah too true,
but it can save those minor brushes!

maybe your lip protection should now include not letting the misses drive your car, seems to work for me!
