From what i have read, you wont fit 16"s over the standard brakes.
If your looking at getting serious, then change to a smaller brake and use 15"s

Yeah, as drew said, get some 17x9s and some 275/40/17 MT ET street radials

all depends how serious he is getting and how much power he is getting to the ground. Yes street slicks are good but they have their limits.
The issue with using 17/18 inch rim and tyre is the sidewall ends up being firmer which makes it easier to turn the tyre than to have it grip. If getting really serious and making the power to need slicks vs street slicks then going a smaller rim and larger sidewall is beneficial which in turn would mean you would need the v6 omega rear brakes.
However 17 inch rim with street slicks will work and work well but it does depend on how serious you are getting and how much power you are trying to get to the ground

I was under the impression that 17s won't clear the front brakes either.. Going to start turning my attention to using 17s now. What size are the 17inch chaser rims for the ve?

ok older style rims that fit are VYSV8 series 1 and 2 also VZ storm rims which are VYSV8 II rims but a darker shadow colour:):) they fit but you can get hub locators if you want to make sure they locate better and to put the load on the hub not the studs:)
rims above are 17 x 8
or whatever Mark has which are 17 x 9

There are plenty of Ve's running 11's/10's with 265/40R18 Et streets running around and they do the job fine, and a lot easier to get your hands on rims that clear if thats what times you are looking at.

Can you give us an idea on what a good et street tyre is?

My 17x9s are ROH RT's.
For skidpan days etc, I have some VX SS and VY 17s - just use some hub rings to fit them (thanks Black Diamond!)

Will 17" rims clear the rear brakes of the ve? I was thinking maybe 18s on the front and 17s on the rear.. Thoughts?

Yep!
Find some 17x9s for the rear mate - then you can safely fit a 275/40/17 MT ET Street radial

hi mate ive run the 275/40/17s et streets 26 inch on my vx = 26 inch tall an et street 2 295/45/17 = 28 inch x 11.5 inch !!! not sure about ve models but due to the height there,s not much chance of fitting them!!! the 28 inch tall will throw your gearing out as well for better or worse!!! cheers
