What is a realistist price for my car
Looking at updating the wife car to a VE Calais V
We had some spare time up our sleeves on the weekend and had a drive around a few car yards having a look ,
I have a
2000 VX Berlina 5.7 LS1 sedan white 190ish kms
10" roof mount DVD , HID head lights
17" VZ Calais rims , Kuhmo KU31 tyres
Genuine VX GTS springs , Pedders red struts and shockers
Moly-carbide disc rotors and EBC green pads
Crane 1.8:1 roller rockers , Performance springs double valve spring and chromoly retainers
Pacemaker extractors , Custom twin 2.5" exhaust , SS inductions CAI
LS1 edit , 194 rwkw , by EFI Dynamics
Tuned for fuel economy 10lt per 100kms around town , 7.1lt on a trip
Im the 2n/d onwer and have owned it since 2003
Anyway being told $7k to $9k trade in , and a yard rang me back this morning and offered $5k
Should i take the trade in offers or sell privately
If i sell privately , is it a sort after vehicle that will sell fast

Carsales says:
4sp Automatic Unleaded Multi-point injected 8cyl 5.7 5665cc
Average Private Price $6,600 - $8,400
Trade In Price Guide $4,200 - $6,000
Average km 150000 - 250000
However, as has often been discussed, selling a modified car you will often get less for it than a stock car unless you are lucky enough to find someone who wants a car with exactly those mods. Often people are better to pull off whatever mods they can and sell them separately. Most people who want modded LS1s want manuals, so being a modded auto will work against it.

As we walked around shifty salemans city, i ran into one of my old reps from 10 years ago
He ask what brings me to car city , i told him we where looking at updating our car
He said he i just missed out on a plum he sold a VX V6 berlina with ony 40000kms for $16990 , but when i told him i had a V8 VX to trade in he went quite real quick , He must of still thought i had my VS SS
Im outta touch with the car values these days
But i could not believe some of there sticker prices
$18990 for a VX SS , $19950 VY SS , VY V8 berlina $19k
Anyway he is checking his wholesaler to see what he can get me a Calais V for , that will be interesting , will he try to stick it up with or without grease:)

One of my daughters bought a very clean average km VY2 Berlina V8 from a yard about 12 months ago for $16k and no doubt prices have dropped since then.
That mob are obviously living in cloud cuckoo land if they reckon anybody will be stupid enough to pay $19k for a VX SS!! Many are going for under $10k these days, if they can even sell them.

yea my mrs bought a vy2 calais bout 6 months ago for 13k with low k's and tidy
i wish someone would pay 19k for a vx ss, im in the process of stripping mine, putting back to standard and selling....it makes me cry what they are worth these days esp considering what i paid 5 years ago. my only hope is mine is very clean, very low k's and a few added things left like wheels, ripshift, clutch etc
oh well thats the ****er of owning a dirty old commodore...there are about a million other ones out there :(

I realise what people advertise for and what you get are not the same, but what gets me is what people and yards are asking for the older SS's like VN VR VS, they are still advertising them for anywhere between $5k and $10k even see the odd one over $10k so why are LS1's a dime a dozen. I should have kept my 70,000 km VN SS I sold back in 2005, probably end up being worth more than my VX.

Eveyone here keeps going on about how LS1 VX SSs are well under $10k, but im yet to see that many that cheap. I mean the autos are pretty cheap, but the cheapest manual VX SS is $9500, with most being over $10k (And the good ones are $12-14k).
So while they have come down a lot in price, their not "that" cheap yet.
but what gets me is what people and yards are asking for the older SS's like VN VR VS, they are still advertising them for anywhere between $5k and $10k
Might have something to do with the number of cars sold over each year. VT/VX was the most popular commodore IIRC. Older VN-VS are rarer these days, meaning for the small market who actually want one there are less to choose from.
Plus certain states allow P platers to drive the older VN-VT1 V8s, whereas they cant drive the LS1s. So less demand maybe?

A decent vx calais in Perth would still fetch around 10k plus.
If I ever sold my vx I would strip it back to stock and sell all the aftermarket parts seperate.

Just before Christmas, I sold my mint VX SS with hyper leather for $12,500. It had tune, OTR, Pipes, 4.11's, built auto and converter, 19's yada yada yada and only had 110k on the clock. Took me 14 months to sell!
You should aim to get between 10-12k private. Car yards offered me the same sort of coin they offered you. Then only to sell for 15k+ I told them to fark off :flipoff:
Be patient and you should get what your chasing via private sale.
Good luck!

I can't see a 2000 VX Berlina with 190,000 Km getting $10- $12 K private.
I just traded my August 2002 VXII Calais LS1 with 95,000 Km, leather and sunroof for anywhere between $9500 and $11,000 (depending on how you interpret the change over deal). I believed that if I sold privately I think about $11,500 would have been a realistic value for private sale. I do keep a lookout for prices, I think a yard may sell be able the Berlina for about $9 or $10K, perhaps $11K, so trade in my guess is around $6K perhaps $7K on a good day ($5K is a low offer, just a starting point for negotiations). It's a bit harder to pick trade in as if they jack up the price of your new car then add a few grand to your trade to make you feel good about the deal, it's all funny money when trading in.

Having just bought my first LS1 powered car it is definitiely a buyers market at the moment...you would think that you should be able to get 8-10K for it no worries.
Try expanding your sales reach to places like ebay, carsales, carpoint and other forums...someone will snap that up you would think

There's absolutely no way you'll get over 10K with those KMs.
I tried selling my VX Calais 5.7L with quite a few mods (180000km) for four months and eventually managed to sell it for $8200 with RWC but rego expired on the day the guy bought it.
It was one of the cheapest LS1s in Australia on Carsales with under 200 000kms. Funny think is, looking at carsales now, some of the VX LS1s that were on there when I was selling my Calais are still for sale. I sold my Calais in August 2010.
SS will always sell for more than a Berlina or Calais. Sold my VX SS which had similar kms but fewer mods in March 2010 for $12300. Mods don't count for shit anyway when it comes to resale values really.
