Can anyone advise on a good car insurance company that is open to minor modifications (ie: changing wheels). I was all set to purchase a set of aftermarket wheels but thought I would check with my car insurance company regarding the different wheels (Allianz). They told me that I had to stick to factory wheels of the same width as standard for the car (VXSS) and that aftermarket wheels if fitted would void the policy if I had an accident (even if the after market wheels were the same width!!). I am allowed however to fit genuine only HSV wheels without a problem of the same width. This limits my choice a fair bit. My premium is pretty good $550/year which is about $200 less than most other insurance companies. So either I get some HSV wheels or risk it with aftermarkets. Hows this for a laugh: They said I could get aftermarket wheels that would be covered, but to a max width of 7 inches only (thats a whole inch less than standard...). What a joke...

Not sure what state you are in, my VX SS is with RACV it is stock standard but prior to the VX I had a car with after market Simmons wheels and RACV took it and had it noted on the policy. RACV were pretty competitive price wise with mine and gave a very good agreed value.

This year I've had to deal with AAMI twice to make a claim. Firstly for the wife's car as a result of water damage and recently when someone decided to turn in front of me while doing 70km/h through an intersection. On both cases it's been a pain getting to the correct claims office. The first time they sent the car to their repairers and it was a nightmare. We picked up the car and it smelled like water damage. Underlay wasn't cleaned. It went back and they masked the smell with some strong chemical. I am changing insurance companies even if it costs me more. It took them close to 2 weeks to get my car assessed and to a repairer to begin work.
I got sick of hearing 'Lucky your with AAMI'.

One thing I have found with Shannons is that their phone reps can be a bit hit and miss ie Different quotes or wont even insure you. My father inlaw on referral from me tried to insure his Porsche 928S and Datto 260Z with them. The first question they asked him was if he was a member of any car clubs. When he said no, they told him they could not insure him.

Lile others I have all my insurances with them both cars and house and contents

Their house insurance includes a "tools / collectables" clause where if it is a total loss you get a payout for these up to 12k even when not listed (may have facts slightly wrong here but it is something like that)

I changed from AAMI recently. I got a quote on zippy.com.au that was $300 cheaper. They don't have the major companies listed, but have companies like Virgin Insurance, AI and some others I can't remember. I ended up with AI. I'd never heard of them before, but they offer all the same stuff, and there fine with mods, as long as they're legal. I haven't had to make any claims yet, and every year without a claim, your excess decreases, from $600 to nothing after 5 years.

On the comment about being hit and miss depending on which rep you get, I had a very interesting conversation when organizing my green slip. Apparently they have a pool of money to use for discounts, and each rep is allocated a certain amount, if you ring up at the end of the day, when all the money is gone, no discount, if the rep is having a bad day, no discount, if you ring early, and are very nice to the rep, you can get a good discount.

So call early, and be nice.

BTW - Cross 8 for 23k in a dodgy Sydney suburb, no mods yet, but they're cool with them, $792

Yeah, the excess was a little high...

$1000! And $400 was simply because of the fact it was a HSV.

But I'm paying $1400 a year compared to the $2000 RACV wanted to charge me and the other insurance companies either refused to insure me being under 30 with a HSV or the excess was about $1200.

I checked all the other insurers but in my case, GIO was the best deal.

Yeah have had a number of cars insured with shannons for the last 5 years but rang up to get a quote on an 08 hsv senator that is standard no mods an was told due to not having a locked garage that not a hope of insurance this was also the case with alianz with which I have my home and contents with. I live in a low risk suburb apparently but no go rang racv and bingo no worries so guess I might have to move all policy's over to them. Also 400 dollars cheaper then either mentioned above looking forward to multi policy discount should get up around 30% with all policy's:)

It was for market value at $15,000. After complaining to Allianz who i am with at the moment about their stupid policy they said that they would investigate and may change their policy to allow 8 inch aftermarket wheels to be fitted. Their computer system says that all pre VE models can only have 7 inch wide wheels which is totally wrong. Wait and see what eventuates from my probing....

careful if your car is lowered, budget assessors are pricks with stuff like that.

im with NRMA, 2011 SS, 21 years old and its $920 a year, insured for 56k - about to change to agreed value when modding starts, up to 70k, premium will go up to 1200, but i work for them now, so i get 25% off :)

+1 for GIO, VE SSV, no problems with basic mods, youngest listed driver is 26, price was less than Shannon even though Shannons quote was limited usage and the car had to be gararged. I cant work Shannons out, everyone seems to get these great deals, I have had two quotes with them and they were both more expensive with more restrictions than the other insurers.
Had one claim with GIO with my previous SS, they were good to deal with and choice of repairer.

Word to the wise, a insurer is only as good as the way they handle there claims.
Cheaper premiums can work out to be a disaster if you are not careful so do your research!

Re Shannons, premiums are effected by mods but NOT by 10% at a time.
They have 3 level of mods for the modern stuff, but once you reach the highest mod list it's highly unlikely anything will change unless other things have been changed (like sum insured, change of driver age etc)

Premiums are judged on-
Age of youngest driver
Post code to where your vehicle is kept/garaged over night
Sum Insured
Type of vehicle (a new V8 Stato is cheaper to insure then a new SS)
Mods (if the insurer excepts them)
Plus a few other things.....

If you can, pay the local Shannons office a visit for a quote as face to face seems to work better.

BTW AAMI have never owned Shannons

I had my work van written off on 3rd June and was only just advised last Thursday 7th July that a cheque was sent to the finance company to pay out the loan (after numerous phone calls wondering what the hell was going on; I wont begin to tell you how long I was on hold for...actually, yes I will: over 4 hours total). Agreed value was $9900 for a 2000 model Hiace. Can't buy one for that especially with the Telstra racking etc. Turns out the pricks only coughed up $4338.60 (????) and I'm expected to make up the rest of the $7746 payout figure! They suggest that because I took out "Gap insurance" when I purchased the vehicle I should make a claim for the difference. Why should I put the Gap Insurer through a claim because AAMI want to be tight arseholes. Not to mention I still have not yet received ANY written or verbal communciation from AAMI advising of the situation other than handballing around departments when I have phoned. It is now 12th July. I'm trying to run a business and without fail a minimum 1 hour wait time per call is expected. The "total loss" department only operates between 9-5. What's more the finance company (GE) who have actually been quite good about it wants to repossess the vehicle with costs accruing. As far as I'm concerned, if the vehicle value is higher than the payout figure, upon writing the vehicle off, the insurance company assumes ownership. Now my credit rating is at risk of default, because they havent fulfilled their obligation. I'm rambling now, but I am so pissed off with them. I have sent a firm email expressing my disgust at the handling of my claim and have not received a reply. Looks like I'm going to be on hold for a while again  Next step is action to recover not only the outstanding amount, but my costs, including lost income potential, phone calls etc. I'll take these turds to VCAT or court if I have to. :flipoff: I've had enough.

I have an insurance question for South Aust. Does anyone have a twin Turbo VT, VX or VY in South Australia? If so who are they with for insurance? Is the car fully covered?
Also is the car legal in SA?

Im looking at doing more mods with my car (Twin Turbo), Im with Shannons but they wont insure the mods I want unless its "legal" or just a show car only.
You can PM me a response if you would prefer!

cheers
