Hiya all,
Most of ya'll will agree or disagree, but the fact is that the new car prices here in Oz are overinflated by a HEAP...
My in laws live in USA and they are awaiting on a delivery of a brand spanking new 2012 top of the line Mustang. It's a V6 though as they are not into the whole V8 thing, but the powerplant is still a ripper with 315 hp or roughly 230kw
They V8 GT Mustang cost only $6000 over the premium V6 model.
The car is costing them $20000 drive away with a few free services as well.
To top it up, they have bought a a package of 5 service book services for their other car for a whole $50....:confused: Otherwise the service was gonna cost them $15.... These are brand new cars at the well known & respected car dealerships, GM & Ford.
Not bad considering that one service here will set you up $300 on average.. but who are we to argue since we have a much higher average wage... yeah right, higher by a few dollars...
The fact that we are officially the most expensive country to live in does not count, does it??
Long live the QUEEN!!! :flipoff::flipoff::flipoff::flipoff::flipoff:

HotBoz,
Yeah we get a pretty raw deal for most things automotive here, including parts servicing and new car prices.
Ive driven the new V6 Mustang, and it went damn good for a V6, handled well too, and not a cheaply made car at all.
As for servicing, its common to get $ 19 oil and filter changes, done in 10 minutes at Ezi lube, Jiffy Lube etc, Ive seen Mobil 1 on special with filter for 19.99. The service costs in Aus are a joke, complete and utter joke, and would never ever take my car in for a dealer service, just to have some air head apprentice screw with my car.
Alot of our over priced imports is pure Tax, luxury car tax, on top of import duty and GST, for instance a new e55 amg in the states was around 74k back in 07, the same car was 225k here ???

lol Your talking to a lot of people who are happy paying for a family car /taxi with a few little mods to make it a sporty car, and even pay up to 80,000 for it, we call it HSV. When in most countries you can get a purpose built sports car for half the rate.
One day we may even get a real sports car engine from the US before they get sick of them

Car Prices are ridiculous in Australia, but it's mainly protectionism to keep the local car industry competitive. If an E350 is similar in pricing to a Berlina or Calais, most people would opt for the former.

You cant have your cake and eat it to. The average wage in the US is probably half what it is here, and you get no holidays

Average income is about two thirds of what it is here, and their standard of living is generally much lower.

If that where the case, than the likes of Holden would have to price their cars correctly/competitively i.e. SS should be about $25k.
Dont forget them spare parts salesman are on a pretty penny too, gotta pay their wages somehow!

How does that work? Import tariffs are now 5% on cars. That doesn't help protect the local industry at all. Mazda 3 is now the top selling car year to date and looks like taking the crown off Commodore after 16 consecutive years.
Australia is in the middle of nowhere with a small population and vast distances to cover. That adds to the cost of importing, distributing, maintaining and selling car in Australia, admittedly not to the extent we pay though. Vehicle importers will sell cars at whatever price they can to be competitive, yet still make a profit. As long as we keep paying they'll keep charging. IMO we have far to many manufacturers trying to compete with what is really a small slice of pie. Higher volume allows less margin per vehicle, although that doesn't seem to affect Toyota and what they charge for new cars.:eyes:

It's interesting seeing parts of the market where there is serious price comparison shopping going on, like right in the cheapo light car segment. Shopping around can get you a very cheap new vehicle, especially if you don't care much about brand. We bought the missus a new Barina Spark CDX (has a few more bits than the base CD) for under $14k driveaway. It has lots of features that were unheard of at that price even 5 years ago.
I also saw the Proton Savvy advertised recently at $9990 driveaway (new) for old stock. The Chery is also $11k driveaway. For a new car with warranty and driveaway costs that is very cheap.
The light car segment has lots of price pressure, and manufacturers have responded.

It's true to say that our prices are on the high side compared to the US...but on the other hand, have you checked out the price of a 'normal' car in Europe recently?
