Hey there!

I was just curious as to whether anyone has found an easy way to pull the filter out of the OTR when still running a MAF. It seems to be a struggle everytime I go to take it out to clean the filter no matter which point i disconnect (before the maf, at the throttle body or at the otr itself).

It's probably a stupid thread but I feel like i'm missing something simple here.

Cheers.

I'm with you there, especially with the new filter fixer retaining bracket the Maf version is a pain in the backside to get the filter in and out. It is a tight squeeze to get OTR on and off, I'm wondering how long the rubber from Maf to tb will last as it is under a bit of pressure. I think the mafless version would make life a fair bit easier but for us Mafies it a compromise we have to make with this OTR it seems

Yeah exactly. The rubber connecting the maf to the tb is looking stressed already and mines almost brand new. Maybe ill contact vcm and ask what the deal is...

iv had mine on and off a few times, its easy as! mine its under no "stress".

have you tryed to make it fit better by loosening the clamps and moving the intake and maf?

I would like to see how you managed to make it stress free unless you push the Maf beyond it's end stops. My Maf is pushed hard back into the large rubber on the otr and the rubber from Maf to tb is tricky to get off and on without pushing back hard on the Maf when removing/installing. I will have to get a hood liner plastic infill too as on a brand new series 2 it rubs the liner and pushes the intake back against its scrivets when the bonnet is closed which will add the the stress on the Maf rubbers.

Mine sounds exactly the same as yours. My cars a sii as well. The hoodlining does rub, but it doesn't look like it puts much pressure on the unit and rubbers.

Getting the rubber onto the tb is horrible - takes a lot of mucking around!

I messaged Scott @ VCM and he replied with the following:

Hi mate,

there is a trick to getting the rubber back on the TB.

loosen the hose clamp near all the way (the one that will go on the TB itself) and move it all the way up towards the maf itself.

roll the MAF to TB coupling back on it self - the simply place it in position and 'flick' the rubber coupling back and it will go over the TB.

tighten the hoseclamp and your done :)

I'll give it a go tomorrow but it seems that will be a very easy way to remove the otr for cleaning!

OTR's are a popular discussion. Couple of questions with some of the OTR's that get their air from under the bonnet. How do the OTR's which have the filters and intake openings inside the engine bay benefit from reduced intake temps? At least the design of the VCM OTR has the air coming in from the front grill. Some of the other designs puzzle me.

As far as I can tell, and as you've mentioned the VCM sucks in air directly from behind the grill. When I was shopping for OTRs, performance was the number one priority. From many dyno sheets, discussions and analysis', I concluded that the VCM has the largest mouth, the air comes in cold and doesn't have to bend around any corners as its completely straight. Cleaning the filter so I have found is more tedious than say the DuSpeed OTR intakes. For the VCM, the whole OTR has to be removed. For DuSpeed, they have a convenient cutout on the top of the OTR that allows the filter to come out. The DuSpeed is also fairly 'straight through', and it also gets it's air from behind the grill.

The ramjet ones look ok, however I wasn't keen on the narrow plastic that bends over the radiator (seemed like if there was going to be a restriction, it would be there).

As far as intake temps are concerned, all OTR's will be better than your traditional side pipe/pod filter arrangement as they're stuck in the corner of the engine bay and cannot avoid taking in some hot air.

Next time you remove the OTR slightly lubricate the rubber connector with
some vasaline or similar so its easier to slide back on and off.

^^ Thanks for the advice mate!
