Hey guys,

Curious. I have a full df 3" on my car. Are these roadworthy or too loud to be? Want to clear some space in my garage and contemplating whether or not to get rid of my standard system.

Cheers

Too Loud, Anyting other than a well kept stock system will fail.

It's not really the roadworthy check that you get caught on, it's ADR spec.
The roadworthy check is a basic safety check "based" off ADRs. It's just not practical to test every part of the car for ADR compliance.

In Victoria at least there is a section pertaining to vehicles manufactured to comply with ADRs:

Vehicles manufactured to comply with emission control
ADRs must have all pipes, hoses, valves, sensors, fuel
and air control devices and any other emission control
equipment originally fitted by the vehicle manufacturer
properly located and connected and not apparently
damaged, deteriorated or altered in any way so as to
appear ineffective.
Although, it refers to equipment fitted by the vehicle manufacturer, not fitted by third parties. My understanding of that is you can't modify a standard exhaust as it is, but if you fit a whole new one it's no longer what was "originally fitted by the vehicle manufacturer" and therefore doesn't apply.

That being said, with the DF system, after it's gotten roadworthy there's still nothing stopping the boys in blue from putting a yellow sticker on it which makes it un-roadworthy (defect notice overrides anything else).

Grab the PDF here, things like this are always worth a quick look:

But in the end, keep the old system. Unless you're prepared to fork out for a stock system down the line if you get a defect notice, I wouldn't risk it for a bit of space in the garage/shed/backyard.

Waaaaaay too loud! If people want roadworthy they need to stick to the factory system or there are a couple of similar "vacuum cleaner" sounding aftermarket systems, but why would anyone bother? In your case if you really need the room get rid of it and if required in future just pick up another one cheap/free on here. Even a sedan/ute system can apparently pretty easily be converted.

Yep couldn't agree more, wish I kept mine... But they're not that hard to get a hold of should you need to pass a test :)

What about flanging between the centre and rear mufflers so you can put a stock rear section on - I wonder if this would give a quick change between legal and not legal noise levels.

Would sure save having the whole catback setup laying about.

the pipe work is in no way the same (diff diameter, diff routing, diff flanges).

just keep the stock cat back, they're not that hard to hide away. i keep all stock parts off my ute for that rainy day lol

or build a bigger shed ;)

Luckily for me, the VZ GTO DF 3" system can have the stock rear mufflers attached at the flange with no dramas at all... 10 minute job to swap from one to the other.

And to answer the q, no...
