Hi guys just had a 232/234 112lsa cam fitted to my vx ss ls1 by wilkinshaw performance they installed timing chain, springs, pushrods etc. I picked the car up today and there was a small ticking at idle not a lot but on way home seemed to get a fair bit louder and after the hour and half drive back well at idle fuk me its real loud atm the ticking noise. It does not get worse with engine revs but u can hear it when u back off engine revs and really bad at idle. Even my neighbour came out when I got home and said what did u break. Car is running really good but except for the ticking. I rang wilkinshaw back up they told me to check for exhaust gasket case blown out or maybe lifters have got some gunk in them and to try out some lifter addtive. I was running just castrol gtx modern 10-40w oil before cam change and was dead quiet and they changed it to full syn penerite 10-40w. You can hear the ticking noise over the rest of car. I had a look under car and u can hear ticking noise coming through extractors as well but more so over tappet cover area. Just looking for any help before I have to drive it all way back to them to check it out thanks. This ticking is very loud.

the heavy duty springs and more aggressive lobes of the camshaft will make a lot more valve train noise than standard. Also the noise is intensified through the headers from the valves snapping shut. On saying that though if the noise seems ridiculously excessive i would be checking it out. I used castrol edge 10/60 oil, i found it worked best to keep lifter chatter noise to a minimum.

Did you change the lifters when the cam went in or still on stock lifters? The impression I get is that the heads werent removed, and if so, there lies the issue, stock lifters.

Might sound a bit dumb but have you checked the your oil level?

Do you know what length of the new push rods are??? Lifter pre-load could be something worth checking.

my Gm motorsport cam is pretty noisy on my car too, loud as, I got the street racer cam think its same duration as what you've said, doesnt me head in listening to it makes you think ya driving an old slapper. i got 7.4 trent pushies in mine and ls7 lifters stock rockers and pac 600thou rated springs, never did check the pre load, but i got to pull the bitch apart and fix a piston oil burning issue, so should do pre load check,
Now any good links to how to check preload with stocko rockers?

From experience I'd say stock lifters or leak from headers. Walkinshaw would've been aware of your lifters ticking though and should've had the extractors sealed properly. Unless they're one of those 'I've got your cash, I don't care now' shops

Yeh first thing I did was check the oil level was fine and yes I still have standard lifters but today found my problem leaking extractors didnt even cross my mind to check extractors bolts cause as u rev car up it doesnt change note or get louder found 3 nuts where only half a turn lose tighten them up dead quiet now not even a slight tick any where. The ticking but was that loud you swear the engine was stuffed. I rang them up but and they told me ( o yeh we forgot to check the nuts again )

Good to see easy solution, but WTF - i guess errors happen, but btw you will need to retension in about 1000 Ks.
