I have a 2007 Senator (evoke) luv it. I am contemplating having a tune/re-flash whatever it is that they do. From searching through the forums this is my understanding what exactly these are.

1) Tuner runs it on the Dyno and obtains performance figures
2)Tuner re flashes their software into my PCM
3) He may then change some of the parameters of the auto, engine timing, airflow, etc to gain performance and economy.
4) Tuner then puts it on the Dyno and runs it and obtains the revised performance details.

This for approx $700-$900

This software that they program into my PCM is it from their workshop or is it a Generic program with their little changes?
Or is it under some licensed arrangement that an aftermarket engineer has developed and they just pay to use it ?
There seems to be so many performance shops/tuners that have this software now how do you know which program to get ?????

Very basically.
A "tune" re calibrates the desired Volumetric efficiency tables along with the desired spark advance tables. Along with many many other variables which can be altered.

Different shops use different software to calibrate these parameters. (EFIlive, HP tuners/VCM suite)
There is no "program" that they flash on perse, merely their own calibrations which they arrive at after allot of practice and study.
Some are allot better then others.

You've pretty much got it mate. The bad example shops tend to run off generic tunes passed down or stolen from other people. The good ones will spend the time customising for each car and know every aspect of their tunes accordingly. Finding the good from the bad is the tuff part and I can assure you from my 5 years tuning a lot of supposadly reputible shops have good and bad reviews.

Soopy i would of quoted a few more aspects than VE and spark as core mentional paremetres. Even the hacks do more than that and the op might think that's the crust of it. Weather or not they understand what, why they are changing parameters is the key.

To the OP.
FUEL, AIR, SPARK is all there is to it at an elemental stage. Its the derivatives around these aspects that make the whole thing work efficiently and there are dozens of them with more or less infinite variables available. When it comes down to it im afraid to say it but there is no perfect tune. In fact the best tunes are commonly derived by guys that do it at home by themselves as they have the time to work on their own cars the most.
