You can't test drive and you can't do extensive pre sale testing of the vehicle. Some vehicles sell for car yard prices and others for much less. Back when VZ's were new, my brother in law picked up VZ V6 with electrics and 38k on the clock for $16k. There are deals to be had on the right day.

Ive been to a few & yes you can get good deals just do your homework first, last time we went a mate got a xr6 $7 grand cheaper than in a yard, that was after he got it in his name, so yeh he did well on that one

Tips for buying at auction.

1. Pick your target car.

2. Grab 3 friends. Have one dressed in a suit and the other two in dirty overalls.

3. Get your 'mechanics' to pop the hood on a few cars prior to your target car and give the thumbs up to the man in the suit. He will then do some low dummy bids and get outbid.

4. When your target car comes get your mechanics to look over the car then shake their heads and give the big thumbs down to the man in the suit.

5. You stand on the other side of the crowd and bid away!!!:bravo:

In SA, a guy I work with picked up an 2007 MY08 CalaisV with 54000km for only $23500 from the Fleet SA (government) auctions, about 3 months ago.

At the same auction, a few 2007 Toyota Camry's went thru for as little as $12000.

Best bet is to work out exactly what car you are after. Then look around and see what they are selliing for on the open market. Then keep an eye out at Pickles and when a car that you want pops up register online to see what it sells for.

Not being able to test drive is not that big a concern if you are buying new enough to have warranty still.

I know I saved about $8k when I bought my Calias V Sportwagon early this year........Other than a faulty wheel bearing that was replaced under warranty it is perfect.

Worth the work if you have the time to pick the right car.

By the way if you see a car going to auction that takes your fanancy you can call them and ask for the reserve price as they will give it to you. And cars do sell for less than reserve I can tell you from experience

cheers
