Hi guys, I just had a cam installed
In my ve manual ssv. I experience a rattle noise from
The gearbox/clutch area when the car
Is at idle In neutral. I am wondering
If this is normal due to the lumpy/rough idle characteristics of the cam. Whilst the car is in gear or being Driven, the noise doesn't exist. The noise only occurs when in neutral and with the clutch out. When it is pressed In the noise disappears. Thanks.

do you have an aftermarket clutch in it?
i have a twin plate in my cammed SV8 and it rattles when clutch is released and out of gear.

Sounds like a thust bearing.
Cam wouldn't be directly causing the rattle but the increase in power had have caused exesive wear on the bearing and not you have the rattle.
That's my guess anyway.

mine does the same but i can barely hear it. Only do when i'm trying to listen to it. Get a bigger/louder cam, that should fix the problem :D

Certain clutches will rattle especially twin plates although my twin plate doesn't rattle and never will....

I have same problem but since the cam install it became worse. From what I know it's just T56 roll over noise, the stock cam rotates in a smoother pattern. With a bigger cam the gear box rotates in a more staggered pattern.
Just my 2c.

The "usual" cause of noise in the T56 is the slight rattle you get from the input shaft bearing and the idles shaft gears. To test if this is the noise, perform two simple steps.
Press the clutch in: This releases the "drive" from the gear box and the noise should fade off. If it stops instantly, it's not the normal rattle. It should take a second or so to die off.
Increase the RPM of the motor by lightly pressing the throttle: This will usually make the engine run a little smoother and stop the "back and forth" rattle inside the box.
I "normal" lumpy cam idle is too slow to cause the rattle ( speaking in very general terms ), it's more pronounced if the idle is actually "rough" or "harsh". It can be tuned out to some degree by altering the idle characteristics to get a smoother idle. The other option is to fill the gear box with a real gear oil rather than trans fluid. Mainlube have an excellent oil, or you could go with the Penrite MG70 if you want to save money in the short term.
Simon.
Mine did exactly the same thing, it was there before the cam change but is more noticeable after I put a cam in it. Seems like it just a T-56 thing.

All to common for the t56 to rattle at idle, mine is pretty loud at could start conditions and then gradually gets quieter as it gets to operating temperature, though the noise is still there.
I have put in new gearbox oil and additive in it with little affect regarding to noise,I guess its just one of those things you got to live with.:bawl:
