View Full Version : Seized Water Pump LS1

Did some searching but most of what I found was re leaking pumps, and couldn't find anything on a seized pump (2001 WH LS1).
Is there anything of special note I need be aware of when replacing a water pump that has seized (rather than a leaking pump)?
Other than new serpentine and pump, I will change coolant. Anything else I should look at replacing while I am at it (thermostat)?
Am I still better off paying the extra for a genuine pump, or are the aftermarket water pumps from Repco/Bursons no longer dodgey? I figure this one went due to km/age, as service records are detailed and don't show it being replaced previously (car has now done just over 180k - last 60k with me). Guess genuine are worth it if this seized one has done 180k before giving up.
Am I right in assuming the failure was probably just related to the age of the part, or is there something else that can cause the pump to seize? Seems like most people replace leaking pumps and I can't find anything on pumps seizing, so wondering if there is something else I need check/fix.
Thanks in advance.

In all fairness have never heard of one seizing but thats not to say it isn't possible.
replacing the pump is quite simple
remove air intake whether it be stock of otr
remove both belts. (I say both because belts dont like coolant and ac belt has a habit of squealing when covered in coolant)
pull heater hoses and radiator hoses off the pump
remove the belt tensioner
remove the 6 bolts holding the pump on the engine.
refit is exact opposite of removal apart from once done fill with coolant and bleed.
Genuine ones have come down in price and I have and always will recommend genuine ones from memory they even come with a brand new thermostat and housing so hence are a little more expensive than aftermarket.
Look at the K's you got out of it that really isn't bad at all why change it with something that you will save some coin but be up for a new one earlier.
Last one I bought the TStat and Housing were seperate, ditto on genuine my VY had over 200,000 on it before it started seeping, the gaskets were also leaking badly and I suspect this is why the car was traded.

Im talking a good 5 years ago. They may have separated them to bring cost down so in that case i do recommend a new thermostat whilst your there they aren't the cheapest but rarely fail. But still is a bit of added security
LOL Peter having said that the TStat in my L98 was dodgy so I had to change it shortly after installing the engine in the Tonner, it had 700 Km's on it!! :)
But again agree 100% it's cheap insurance.

I would buy genuine.:)
Was it a genuine or aftermarket one which seized?

I wouldn't know the difference between genuine and non-genuine...unless they were still in the boxes
Genuine: one dealership has quoted me $495, another $468-68 but neither have it in stock.
Non-genuine: Repco are chasing $330, Bursons $287-95.
Brand new genuine one on eBay located here in Adelaide, current bid just over $100, but can't wait 4 days for the auction to finish.
Will ring around a bit more, but at this stage looks like the best I can hope for is that Holden Spare Parts will take me to dinner and a movie before they screw me.

Just remember rule of thumb for everything in life you get what you pay for

Yeah, but price difference between genuine and non-genuine would almost pay for a show-bag for my daughter at the Royal Show.
Good news: local forum member has helped me out with a very good price on a new genuine item .

its just genuine because it comes in a holden box with a 2 year warranty.
the aftermarket jobbies are just as good i have used one before myself without any issues
most aftermarket ones come with a 2 year warranty aswell. If you do get a very cheap one I recommend getting GMH gaskets for it and binning the ones they give you. Just in case.

Cheers guys, already got a genuine one a week or so back (great price via forum member).
Will still keep all this in mind, however given how long the first one lasted, if I still have this car when this new one goes, by then it will probably just be cheaper for me to buy another second hand LS1 than stump up for another pump (genuine or otherwise).
