My SV8 has had this problem since I bought it new .. When in first if you floor it, even in normal mode, it will scream around into the red on the tach and basically not shift until you lift your foot. I had to pass a tractor doing about 20kph today and it did it again. Typically i dont push down flat on the throttle .. Ever. It's very disconcerting .. I just trust that the rev limiting will kick in to protect the drivetrain. Is this normal behaviour?

Your not hitting the limiter so stress less. 5500 where the red is on an ls1 is very conservative. Stock engines can go to 6500 (6200 iirc is the stock limiter) when allowed to no problems. These engines aren't like the old 5L's. They love to rev hard and often.

My Calais will rev out to 6-6.5k when I give it a big a hit of WOT, but it rarely gets that treatment because I usually end up being 20-30km/h over the limit:driving:
Also, I've deliberately left the auto in 1st and then forgot about when I did WOT and it just up shifted anyway

That can be overridden in the tune btw. You can even make it shift in to 2nd regardless of throttle too which is handy.
