Hey guys,

Im looking at getting either a HR/MR truck license somewhere in Victoria. Does anyone have some feedback as to where to go/what sort of price to pay?

Also which is better to get? I assume HR as you can driven anything smaller and costs a similar amount?

Ive currently got a Forklift license but havnt driven one in many years, but normally pretty quick at learning anything to do with an engine :).

Ive held a manual victorian license for the last 8+ years.

Cheers, Errol.

Where abouts do you live?

If you're in South Eastern area, I'd be going straight to DECA in Carrum Downs or TDT (Transport Driver Training) in Dandenong and Carrum Downs... DECA are also in Altona..

Both have been around for a long time, and from what I've heard, provide a very good service..

Eastern is probably best, although i dont really mind going anywhere if its worth it.

Ill check them out, price seems fairly reasonable. Do you know if they can actually issue the licenses on site? They say "Successful participants will receive Certificate of Competency." Is this the license or do i need to sit that as an extra at vicroads?

Cheers

i got my MR a few years ago at TDT in dandenong. they were good, half day course. and test. just watch out for the stop sign at the gate. you do the test and everything then they give you the paper that you take to vic roads to get the actuall licience.

you might aswell go straight for your hr. saves paying for the upgrade and retest ect later on if you need to drive bigger trucks. unsure of coasts it was a few years ago and work payed.

there is also ugo or something in dandenong their trucks dont look as nice tho.

Errol,

I am currently putting a number of my employees through the HR licence and am using Journey Management.

Give them a call it is only costing $187.50 for each man. The government are currently subsidising if you are upgrading your qualifications to cert IV. My guys are Cert III qualified.
If you allready have Cert IV or above i think you are out of luck for the subsidy.

go the HR Road Ranger Gear box Errol, for when you upgrade again( after 12 months) to b double if you want to upgrade again, find the right guys and drive an AUTO to upgrade. have heard many testing facility's that if you use them again discount for upgrading can be found.
plus many jobs around for fork and heavy ridgid. BRICKS to start with.

I did my HR through Transport Driver Training last year. When I do my HC I'll probably go through them again or maybe DECA. My instructor was a bit of a dick so might go DECA. Trucks were top notch though!

You get tested on site and when you get your competency, you take it into Vicroads, get your photo taken and pay for your new license. (It replaces your car license.)

Near impossible to get a job driving a HR without any driving experience! Also have to do HC license before doing MC.

Is a half day or full day going to be enough? Whats the learning curve like if you've never driven a truck before...

Do qualify for the current subsidy do you have to work in that industry or already hold a relevant cert?

Interesting concept, was always intending on starting with the manual as auto seems pretty pointless :P.

I dont see myself doing it as a full time job (Im working in IT as a System Administrator). I was mostly considering getting one as its useful being able to drive a truck/bus/forklift, plus i think it would be interesting to learn. After doing some research it doesnt seem that difficult to do either (at first i was expecting like a 2 week $10,000+ course but obviously its a lot easier).

Cool, so it shouldnt be that expensive overall.

Does anyone know if these companies run courses on the weekend, or is it just a weekday thing?

Thanks all for your answers :)

I did my HR in 3 blocks of 4 hours which also included the test. I did mine in a truck fitted with an 18 speed crash box which has a steeper learning curve. A little more expensive than an MR but was good fun.

Going by your last post, an MR license would probably suffice. Still do manual but a synch box instead of a crashbox. TDT do weekend training, not sure if they'll test you on the weekend though. Also I think you need to be unemployed to be eligible for the subsidy.

i only did my mr,..so half day was enough for me... just like driving a big car! (kinda) i had also been driving trucks for a year or so before i got my licience.

HR is a 2 day course i think (from memory) and thats with them teaching you to drive and everything. they wont put you into the test till they know you will pass..

also check your mirrors!~

sorry but i got my HR licence on the satday and started the following monday!
and sorry about the HR to HC to MC thing but once you have your licence they don't retest you on any of the stuff from before.
get your licence in road rangerand you can drive any gearbox truck and from then on use the auto option for the next licence.

Garry

ps as i was driving the test for the HR, my tester asked if i had a job! and if not he had 1 for me.

:)

No you don't have to work in the industry, you might want to get the licence for varrying reasons.
There are a number of boxes you can tick on the form like, wanting to improve employment oportunities, increasing skills etc. I don't have a copy of the form or i would pass it on to you.
Give Journey Management a call and ask what courses and subsidies they have available.

I didn't say it never happened. I applied for over 100 HR driving jobs and never got a look in. Decided to drop in on a few places and was informed that most companies won't touch you unless you've held a HR for at least 2 years because of insurance reasons. I'm just sharing my recent experience on the matter and I think your situation is an exception to the rule.

Also if you wanted to drive a B double with a crash box why would you obtain your license in an auto? You're paying for your tuition so might as well get your money's worth.
