Hi All,
I discovered that my second replacement VCM intake has distorted and bent at exactly the same point last time I ensured that when i fitted it that it wasn't overtightened! Why do these intakes keep buckling near the metal support?
Regards
James

Perhaps that's not the appropriate answer...
A suggestion of getting another OTR might be of more assistance tho ;)
Try contacting vcm suite and ask them as that otr is their product..
You might wanna consider dus otr or carbon fibre orrsom otr. It looks great and it's very sturdy. It also helps keep the air intake temp cooler.

If your going with the same OTR again, use a bit of vaseline to lube it and only tighten it just enough so its secure, then when the engine twists a bit under load there is a bit of give at that point.

What are you using as a joiner to the throttle body?

VCm sent me a replacement housing that was apparently a revised thicker plastic. It has now done the same thing again after ~6 months of not being touched. Since its over a year old now, I dont think I can get another :(

@SSV402; I am using the supplied rubber housing that molds the Thorttle body and VCM intake by either Harrop Black Series Blower or VCM inc metal brackets...
@Malus; My Blower and Intake are less than a year old I noticed the intake buckle only after removing the second intake that was supplied by VCM.

mines fine, how tight are you doing them? i see your in sydney, so i wouldnt think it could be heat related.

The first one I got buckled bottom LHS of the collar and I know exactly when it happened, I was stuck on the Tullamarine Freeway heading back to Berwick in stop start traffic in 37deg, took me almost 3 hours to get home that afternoon.
The second one I have is supposed to be the improved thicker collar, so far it hasn't buckled.

Not shit at all mate, quite a pathetic response really! Had no problems with mine, i would still say it has been over tightened.

Well the first one was fitted by Sam's performance and fitting them day in day out I think It is safe to say they would know not to over tighten them.....
Second one that was supplied by VCM (straight away) i must say I fitted myself and insured it wasn't over tightened there was even a slight movement in the rubber it was that loose. I think it is a combination of engine movement i.e. twisting rubber housing when accelerating, Heat from stop start traffic as Chocco mentioned and design of metal bracket it needs a metal surround that supports the entire surround of a rock hard plastic thats not susceptible to heat shrinkage and expansion.....
However in saying all this I do not want to put down the VCM OTR as it has made incredible power with the harrop blower and they have been more than happy to help out when this problem has raised its head!
cheers

James you have mention the correct solution ie metal surround support not just a pole in the guts which I think they have now on the oval:(
... metal bracket it needs a metal surround ...
Does the unit fitted have the aluminium support spacer screwed into the oval?
As stated above - call VCM and they will respond.

Is this metal support is that just for the blown version or is it for the N/A version as well ??

I belive only the blown version, Na gets no support, which might be something they need to look at, either way, Greg will sort it out!

where exactly are you guys getting this distortion/overtightening, im a little lost trying to look on mine where you mean...

The blown version is more "square" because of the hood/pulley clearance requirements which is why it has the support. The NA version is more circular therefore and does not exhibit the same tendancy.

I was getting some more work done last week and Terry (Mechanic) noticed the bottom of the intake had crimped in leaving unfiltered air to get into the TB. He got some stiffer platic welded underneath - will keep an eye on it but hopefully it will be ok now.
