Hey guys,
Odd question, but if i was to cut an oil filter in half, would it be possible to weld the two halves back together and have it hold oil pressure? Dont worry about the filter part, just want to know if the metal is thick enough to be welded.
Cheers, Errol.

Have to be Mig welded & cooled as you go..but why if ya don't mind me asking?

Most unlikely, for the small cost of a oil filter not worth the risk, so why bother.

If you clean it up well and are good with an oxy anything is possible. But it might warp a bit.

Is this specifically difficult?

Ive picked up an oil adapter to run an external oil cooler and remote oil filters... But it still requires an oil filter to be fitted. As the adapter is about 33mm thick, it will cause a normal oil filter to drop below the sump line (which is obviously not good).
As im running remote dual filters i dont need a third in the system, but need a way to block the hole up. I was thinking of cutting a filter in thirds, removing the filter element and central section and getting the remaining ends welded back together.
Assuming the weld was relatively straight forward it would be a cheap option.

Can't you make a way to blank it off?

Im VERY open to suggestions...
This is what it looks like.
NOTE: The gold thread in the centre has a female thread on the other end, which screws onto the normal filter thread. Thats what hold its onto the block. I had thought about welding a "cap" onto it, but i wouldn't be able to undo the central part to take it off the block. Hence it needs to be removable....

If that's the case have an empty filter jacket cast up outta slightly heavier material as the tin in those oil filter's are pretty thin.

Doesn't look like there's much to play with looking @ the pic above with that adapter though.

I reckon I would make up something else. I would not like to risk those welds.
I think if you got 2 flat plates of steel, cut them into the correct size circles, welded a nut in the center of one to screw onto your filter plate, left the other end blank and joined the two plates with an inch and a half or so of solid steel pipe (to make something that looked like a cut down filter,) and drill a few holes for the oil to return through near the centre on the plate which you mount it with, you would be able to make up something you could weld up safely and then just stick a gasket on the junction part. :)

There needs to be a return for the oil. :)
You could machine up a dummy filter that would be low profile but you're adding a couple of 90 degree turns to the oil path and the cost would be about the same as buying the correct Remote adaptor, this would be offset by selling the current sandwich adaptor.

you could have a go a brazing / silver soldering the old filter can together - my guess it would be too thin for arc welding methods.
or just buy the correct setup for your application

Could you screw a 90 degree on the gold fitting and screw the hose directly onto it rather than the fitting on the side of the adaptor

May be a local supplier but this is what you need:

Or get one machined up.

Can't help you with the thread size without checking one physically but I am sure someone here will help. I did something similar years ago with a monstered mini and was able to grab the full kit locally but couldn't find anything other than the UK stuff. Good luck!

Wont get a chance to fit it up to the car for a couple of months, but looks like a really nice solution. Im very happy.
