My daughter has an R33 GTS T and its getting its 3rd turbo repair this time the mechanic reckons its the oil shes using which is a good quality turbo oil not sure of the brand, its carbonating from getting too hot and leaving carbon particles which have been going through the turbo
Can anyone suggest what oil she should be using.
Thanks Allan

When I had mine I would use MOTUL 4100 Turbolight (http://www.linkauto.com.au/view/page/414.html)

Was good but @ $90 per bottle every 5000kms it can get expensive.

My R33 was boosted to 13psi and ran a 3" exhaust from the dump, had an atmospheric BOV and got flogged.

I never had any problems, ever.

Maybe get a turbo timer for it?? They're usually only required for bigger and better turbo's than standard (especially with metal impellers) to reduce fatigue but it can't hurt.

How much boost is she running and what boost controller is it?

If she is using a Boost "Tee" tend to spike at the start and then level out. The stock turbo won't handle anymore than 12psi before shitting itself and the spike may take it closer to 15 during ramp.

What oil is she using? Have you been to the same mechanic for the previous two times the turbo's popped? What did he say the other times and did it get reco'd or get a used replacments? I'd take it in to a specialist and get them to have a better look. Also get a boost gauge and see what it's running.

The oil she was using was Motul 4100turbolight, the turbo is a Garret 2835 RS running 18 psi (built engine). Last time the oil feed or the return got blocked and the turbo was replace with this one. There are no specialist in our area and since posting I have spoken to another mechanic and he suggested Motul 300B I think it a fully synthetic race oil.

I run Motul V300 Chrono and nothing less. With GT2835 I would make sure you are replacing your sender lines with decent quality braided items. Ensure that there is more than enough oil pressure under load and a remote oil cooler would be a good idea at this stage in the game. The oil pumps aren't great on the RB25's and when they're on their way out, the turbo is always the first part to know about it especially when it comes to the oil only items, Garret original are about as good as it gets for a reliable turbo these days but they aren't bullet proof if the oil pump can't get them the oil flow they need.

Hmm make sure the oil line obviously got removed and cleaned when that happened along with an engine flush to get rid of any other sludge in the engine. The oil line routing could be too close to the turbo/exhaust manifold causing it to cook? A digital laser thermometer could tell you if you point it at the oil line and it shows something like 250 degrees. Oil can't take more than about 220.

I use Motul 300v it's a grade 5 synthetic and is very good. Downside is it's $100/4L

my partner is the RB expert, but we run only neo oil in our cars, especially the rbs. (he has a r32gtr and i had an r34 for a short time) its really great oil. stays cleaner for longer and really looks after engine, turbo, etc. but ill have more advice when ive spoken to the import expert that is my other half haha :)

I used Motul Turbolight in my 180SX (sr20) and that seemed to be a good oil.
