Hi

Just need some advice i think i just broke my diff??

The car has got 107,000k on it and it is a 07 ve ss manual with otr, exhaust and tune pushing 270rwkw car has been tuned for the last year or so.

Anyway this is what happened.
On my way home from work i gave it a little bit of stick in first gear and all of a sunned i hear a BANG and the whole car shook.
I quickly pulled over i thought i ran over something.
has a look around the car underneith and every was look fine.
i jump back in and indicate to turn right and as i go to take of i can feel the rear end banging and moving slowly.
now in a straight line car seems ok but as soon as you turn a corner it bangs.

Do i need a new diff?
Whats the retail price on a standard diff??

Can't comment on whether you need a new diff or not but if you do Holmart have brand new shot peened 3.45 and 3.7 diffs for $1550 ea. See http://holmart.com.au/online/category5_1.htm#426 Also you can usually pick up low km 3.45 LSDs on here for $500-$600.

The other alternative I believe from things I've read/heard and will possibly end up about the same money  is to put your internals into a Trutrac. Apparently infinitely better, but does depend on exactly what's broken.

I hope its not the diff i cant hear any wining noises and in a strait line seems ok but as soon as you turn a corner and then bang you hear like someones under your car hitting it with a hammer.
Hope it's the cv joint or maybe an axel.
How much does a trutrack diff cost???
I think i might need it considering i want to up the power level with a cam.

There is/was a group buy on Trutracs on here recently - may even still be running? I didn't take a lot of notice as can't afford one but from memory they were around $1k + shipping from US.

I vote for the shaft as well.

Well from my 4wding experience whenever we broke cv's it would be ok going straight and then hard to turn the steering wheel as the broken cv in the front would bind and jam everything and make clunking noises. Being rear wheel drive ss with cv's, sounds exactly the same thing.

Mate I had a similar thing happen to my R8, only Friday week ago... Mine had sheared the head clean off a rear tail shaft bolt.....

Ive also sheared the rear tail shaft bolts before mate. Might be another thing to check.

Hi, I was a mechanic last century and if the ve diff still operates the same as '80s diffs (so much has changed since I did it for a living) you have a crown gear and pinion gear which changes drive through 90 degrees. Then you have spider and side gears that allow the outside wheel to spin faster than the inside wheel when cornering. The noise you describe and when it occurs makes me think side/spider gear problem.

This happened to me the other day, was driving really slow in 3rd at 40's then all of a sudden heard a big bang & thought I ran over something, there was nothing on the road but the car still drives completely fine with no banging or weird noises. I even took it for a nice drive through the mountains last nite & it ran perfectly. Sounded like the noise came from behind the front passenger seat but who knows..

Well Just an update

Took it down to the local holder dealer on friday and they said it was the diff, something internally was broken.
They quoted $2700 for a standard replacement. (yeah right im not going to pay that).
Anyways had it toed to the boys down at Gm Motorsport and let them handle it.
I pick it up tomorrow, i went for the 3:7 diff ratio as that is what they recommended to give it a little more poke off the line.

So we will see how she goes tomorrow. will keep you updated.

Hi

Oh wow I am surprised it was the diff. Anyway now that the car is at GM Motorsport your car is definetly in GOOD HANDS.

I remember when my gearstick went all flimsy in my VX Clubsport, I had the car picked up from Calder Park and taken straight to a Holden dealer in Oakleigh Victoria and they said I broke an internal component and it would cost $1200 to fix, I then put it on another tilt tray to F1 Performance back then who were a sponsor on these forums at the time and they fixed it all up for a grand total of fifty bux!

Richard
