Today!
Just back from a trip to Melbourne to collect the Seal for the Lift, also grabbed some Go-Jacks Hydraulic Fluid and a pair of Stabiliser Legs for the Trailer as they were built into the old Ramps.

Had the Propane Tanker here today to fill up the big tank, a bit over a year and it was $230!!
(spent more than that at the old place per 1/4)

LOL they really need to expand how many replies a thread can have before it's "cont" ;)

On the other forum I mod I cut mine off at 4000 and start a new thread.

Today!
ARP Head stud kit arrived, Hoist is still not leaking ;)

A quick observation: On my other Forum we don't charge for Vendor access and only ask that they provide "Good Service" to our Members...

A LOT of them seem to take the attidtde that as it's costing them nothing they just don't care... by Contrast here the Vendors pay for their "space" and so far out of 4 fairly big transactions I've received perfect service so well done LS1 Forums Vendors and thanks!

ABS/TRAC

Ok looking into this a bit more...

Turns out the supplied ABS module is a 2wd one so option a: is to leave the main body loom wired as 2wd and put a 2wd VIN into the PCM that way when we plug Tech2 in it'll see the Vin and the Module as a match and program.

I was able to find a Genuine Cross8 Crewman for sale in Qld and the owner was kind enough to go out pop the hood and read me the part number on the ABS pump!

Turns out it's the SAME Pump that was on the car as a Cross6, when I plugged it into the V8 it had no ABS and no TRAC, but that was with it wired as a 2wd, option b: is now to swap the wire to V8 mode refit my original module and take it back to Holden and see if it will program! <fingers crossed>

Holden don't have a listing for the 6.0L Cross8 Crewman pump at all hence them suppling me the 2wd Module in the first place but that all changed with the guy in Qld verifying the numbers are a match V6/V8!

IJ.

Today p.s.

Went out swapped the wire and fitted up the old ABS/TRAC Module...

NO STARTER nothing... :(

Let it run through the POST and saw "fuel gauge error" and thought DOH I know what that is... opened the hood and sure enough I'd forgot to plug it in... DUHHHH

Plugged it in hit the starter and let it POST, no ABS error and TRAC off gone from the dash! :D

Backed it out of the shed gave it a squirt on the grass and "LOW TRACTION" flashed on along with the rear brakes and off it went, tapped the brakes at the bottom of my dirt driveway and sure enough ABS kicked in so off down my road I went to a big open graveled area.

1 quick flick spin to confirm all was well and off home I headed with a HUGE grin on my face, it accelerates so damn hard on gravel it's stunning and can only get better with the TrueTrac fitted!

I have it booked in Wednesday to finish the linking then I can start on the Blower install!

Doesn't help that Holden have 0 information about either car and barely any accurate parts listings..

Awesome job.... Well done. Now bring on the power upgrade!!

But i know what you mean about the acceleration when on dirt. I did the a similar thing to the Coupe 4 when I got it, stalled it up on some soft sand and then laid into it. It just took off like a scalded cat. There is no way I ever would have thought it would do what it did. It felt like it was on tarmac. Crazy shit!!

We have a saying "If you leave something long enough it will fix itself".

This happened just the other day, after 2 months of my Etag flying around the dash in my new work car, one of my co-workers pulled out a new clip and stuck it to the windscreen. See problem fixed.

LMAO, this thing fought me every step of the way....

If it hadn't been for the confirmation from the guy in Qld I was pretty well lost what I was going to do next if telling the PCM it was a 2wd car didn't work..

This way though I have full CrossTrac features with NONE of the fun killing ESC features that the V6 had! :D
(it gets sideways so easily and controllably on grass something you just couldn't do with the V6/ESC)

Today!
Went down to the shed this morning, it was nice to see 2 long wheelspin marks on the grass and a couple of shorter ones from the front wheels after the sideways yesterday!!

Prior to this it was a single spinner to the point on wet grass or trying to back it into the shed anything above idle it'd just sit turning 1 wheel...

Awesome job. Glad you got it all sorted.

I know what you mean about acceleration of these things on anything other than tarmac. When I first got the Coupe 4, I found a nice patch of red loamy dirt and came to a stand still. Stalled it up and buried the boot to the floor, came out the other end with a grin from ear to ear. Took off exactly the same as it does on the tarmac, no noticeable wheel slip at all.

You are gunna love this thing.

Yep on gravel there was a little bit of slip while it go it's shit together then neck snapping acceleration :D

LOL as it was at one point we had to get my parts guy to ring the storeman at GMH and then get him to go out to the rack with a tape measure to verify the Transfer case shafts as the EPC was telling us there was only 1 for my car..... (there wasn't, there's one to suit V8 4 speed and v6 5 speed and another to suit v6 4 speed as fitted to my car)

Had a bunch of the boys up today, was showing them how well the Tonner get's sideways chucking it around on the grass outside the big shed....

Went in a bit hot with the idea I'd handbrake turn it then power back...bzzzzz forgot the handbrake needs adjusting and sailed off the embankment... DOH

Couldn't back up so went forward down it then had to find a way back up as the trees are all too close to get the Fat Tonner through, good test of the CrossTrac system as it was lucky to have 2 wheels on the ground at any one time ;)

Climbed out with a minimum of fuss!

Today!

Just been out checking fluids for the trip across to the Holden dealer in the morning :)

<fingers crossed> this is the last one, I have an "SVS" Error I suspect is stored from having the incorrect ABS Module on the car and the "Immobiliser error" again I suspect from it unlinking soon as I plugged it all into the car the first time!

We linked it successfully in Sydney on the bench the first time but have never managed to do it in car due to either the Wiring Loom being "wrong" for the AWD or the ABS module being wrong once the wiring was corrected!

If all goes well the only remaining electrical issue is rewiring the Dome light due to the LUX BCM.

IJ.
02-11-2011, 12:12 PM
Today!
Well that was a bust.... :(

Due to the last linking attempt blowing out to a 5 hour wait that we cancelled it's now a 10h 40m wait... I couldn't be bothered so I came home, the "next" attempt will be a 21H 20m wait so it's going to have to stay overnight....

I'll get Dave to meet me down there to give me a ride home.

On the way back I thought the "fiddling" might have broken the ABS as it was raining a bit and usually you'll get a couple of ABS shudders in this thing, NADA ZIP ZILCH...

I'd already tested TRAC to make sure we hadn't borked that but had to wait till I got somewhere where there was a gravel shoulder on the road, ABS is fine, I'd hammered the brakes a few times in the wet with no ABS event so can only assume it was getting equal brake bias both ends and not locking a wheel..

Called in and got a few more bits to cross some T's and dot some I's, normally I'd had to have "made/modded" bits as the last car/engine combo there wasn't anything available off the shelf :)

Ta Daaaa it's done Dyno'd and returned home under it's own power! (never a sure thing after a session on the rollers)

171.4 AwKw so 230 AwHp, not bad considering that's on the tiny single V6 exhaust system :D

Today!
Decided to tackle the Interior light issue today ;)

The Tonner has a simple on/door/off single light at the back of the cabin, the LUX BCM I'm using is for a top end car with a whole bunch of lights/map lights and so on so works very differently in the electronics hence no interior light when you open a door.

I've had the 2 circuit diagrams for months now but it wasn't a priority, printed them this morning and came to the conclusion that without totally rewiring it there was only 1 "simple" way to get it working, it's not the prettiest hack but it's fully functional and the ACC/Door sense works perfectly! ;)

Had a small scare as I'd disconnected the BCM and on the restart the "imobiliser error" on the dash returned.... ARGGGHHH another start cleared it, then the 70,000 Km service warning came on and that took me a few minutes to remember how to clear it! (I'm using it as the "Fit SuperCharger" warning :D

Was the KW rating of the motor you got 260kw ??

171.4 AwKw so 230 AwHp, not bad considering that's on the tiny single V6 exhaust system :D

so what next , exhaust , blower or both ??

an exhaust then dyno'd would be good ,

Today!

Took the Tonner down to Melbourne today on a parts run, such a relief NOT to be greeted by R2D2 everytime I start it :)
(Error beeper thing)

It's such an effortless cruiser!

I've been holding off buying more parts as I wasn't sure if I'd ever get the AWD system to work but now that's sorted onward>>>>>

I seriously considered building a Stroker as the Manley kit is such good value, then stepped back a bit and thought more about the total package and what I'm trying to achieve.

Thought ok I'll buy some ARP2000 rod bolts maybe an Oil Pump and an ARP Main Stud Kit.... started checking prices and found some Scat H Beam rods and upgraded them to ARP2000 bolts so I should be able to spin it a bit harder now chucked in some Clevite H Main and Rod bearings as well!

Also rebuilt my Oil system that I sold off from the last project and bought a 19L Fuel Cell to add some range and act as my Surge Tank for the Denso Pumps I run!

hey , just in hindsight and for anyone thinking of doing this ,

do you think it would've been any easier with a 5.7 instead of the 6.0 ??

For this car it started life as a Late DBW V6 with the Bosch 8x ABS/TRAC and my 6.0L is a VZ DBW, the 5.7 DBW engine has a few different connectors AFAIK, might have been easier to source a workable 5.7 Main Body Loom but I really wanted to run an e38 PCM and didn't want to be changing reluctors in the engine.

In the long run now it's done it was fairly "simple" but this is of course based on hindsight ;)
(I'd have been screwed if I hadn't found some circuit diagrams and would still be waiting until December for a loom from Holden then of course it would still have had the incorrect ABS Module in it so wouldn't have solved anything.....)

Today!
Took a trip across to Difillipo Performance Exhaust and after a chat with Darren came up with a plan of attack!!

I'll flange and bolt the Cats to the Headers mod the 2nd Trans Cross member so there's a straight shot with none of this up and over squashed 2.5" pipe BS, flange off both Cats into an X Pipe then into the front of the 2 big ass hot dogs that can live side by side in the centre.

From there it will be 2 more custom 3" mufflers on their sides offset/offset to head the pipes up and over the IRS under the tray along the left side inside the rail to a custom dual 3" in/out rear muffler in the stock location!!

Also picked up the Steel for the crossmember Mods and sourced the Bulkhead connector for the fuel pump wiring in the Surge/AUX tank

Today!

Headers are in!!

NEVER done a V8 where the Drivers side was 10x easier than the passenger side!

I'm not sure what Model Car the headers were prototyped on but I suspect the rails in my VZ might be a little different as there was no way known they were going in, as it was I had to pull the rocker cover off and un bolt the fron diff and rotate it down, all done now.

The pics show the "Issue" with the AWD chassis and it's second trans Crossmember, I'll Mod it tomorrow so the new 3" pipes have a straight shot unlike the squashed 2" stock pipes that go up and over it.

LMAO I built a twin system for my mates SC400 last NYE, we fired it up for maybe 30 seconds, that night at the Neighbour's NYE Party EVERYONE commented on it... I live in a valley my nearest neighbour in 3/4 on a KM away...

Drivers side was shit simple Dog's seriously took maybe 4 minutes and it was in :D

Pass side is a different matter, talked to Darren yesterday he told me it takes a little persuasion to get it in and short of climbing up on them and jumping they weren't going in, there is a row of beads sticking out from the rail that stopped it as it was hard against the head and hard against the AC pipe.

I'll have a look at the rail on my VY and compare when I get around to it but I sort of remember someone posting that the rails were slightly different as their turbo header wasn't going in.

IJ.
08-11-2011, 02:18 PM
Just rang Darren, apparantly the Pass side goes in from the bottom....
(I tried for 45 minutes and there was no way known mine was going to...)

Ahhh well it's in there now so all good, I was going to fit them when I dropped the engine for the rebuild/blower but decided to build the exhaust and get the IRS in before that so it's all ready to drive once the engine is finished.

Yep pic is deceptive. the Steel Crossmember actually mounts behind the TC,

I don't quite understand the need for 2 crossmembers!
(There's an aluminium one bolted to the floor in front of the steel one then they bolt together and to the rails...

Not really a pain, just had a "CBF'd" moment once I'd finished it ;)

Dropped the Cart Axle out and will make a start on the IRS install tomorrow as it needs to be in there before I can proceed on the exhaust.

Yep I'm really looking forward to a comfortable ride ;)
(as it is with the light tray I get a headache driving it at low speeds)

Pretty amazed at how much difference there is between the Wagon and the Tonner over the same section of road coming into my place, it's 100 Km limit and a bit off camber then one of the farms leaks gravel from the drive over the road, hit it in the Wagon and you hear gravel and continue on, in the Tonner the back steps out down the camber and you have to correct for it.

Also bought some steel (not easy finding 4mm plate in the bush, ended up at a place that makes gun safes) then took a run down to my supplier in Melbourne to pick up a fuel cell for test fitting, it's too deep to make work so I'll return it in the morning for the shallower one.... DOH

Odd thing I noticed with the stock tank is it has a hump in its guts for the Driveshaft and the Pump side is deeper preventing a true dual exhaust but there's no way for the fuel from the non pump side to get across to the pump???

Today!

Fuel system plan B-64a...

Bought home a 32US Gallon Jaz fuel cell last night but it was looking like more hassle than it was worth as it would require extensive modification to keep it emmisions compliant, and frankly I just CBF'd ;)
(damn 2 Gall tank was actually more expensive than the 32 Gall one)

Thought it over last night and returned it this morning picking up instead a 2 US Gallon ProStock cell, the idea here being I'll move the stock tank Forward and Up for IRS and Exhaust clearence, the side benefit here is I don't need to reconfigure the fuel computer (might have been "easy" but knowing my luck it'd end in disaster)

I'll use the small Cell as a surge tank and install my 2x 410Lph Densos from the last toy and use the Holden in tank pump to feed the surge tank.

It doesn't ;)

2.5 x2 = 9.812

Too close to call but I'd say the single 3.5 would be much cheaper but a lot harder to build quiet.

One thing that needed doing with the Tank relocation was addressing the Filler neck...

The Tank end is 38mm and the neck end 52mm, Holden for some reason specced what looks to be Radiator hose that's formed with a bend and one end larger but NOT being fuel rated it's bubbled/dying inside... :(

I machined up a reducer and welded it into the neck and will grab a piece of 38mm Fuel rated hose when I go to Melbourne later today!

Also picking up 2x Aeromotive Fuel Pump controllers so I can PWM/Stage the pumps so they're not running flat out all of the time.

G'day Ian,

I've just caught up on the last couple of weeks of posts and I am impressed with the progress :goodjob:

I hear you, brother!

As I am finally getting to a point in life where I have time for my projects, I seem to need to have a "little rest" now and then. :)

Cheers,

Today!

Too wet to mow the grass so I went out early this morning and dropped the front, pulled the rear springs out and lowered it on the jack to get a feel for how low the rear needs to go :)

Once that was done we headed into town for some lunch, my day is done but Al is just starting his Blower install.

Today End!

Caught up on a heap of neglected house/yard work yesterday so no progress on the car...

Went out this morning and made a start on the exhaust as I needed the IRS in place to get accurate measurements for the custom mufflers and pipe routing, got a bit done then the power went off...

Plugged the Generator in so I could get to the measuring point then headed down to Difilipo's and ordered the Mufflers, came back and did a little more, gone about as far as I can till I get the Mufflers.
(it's all just tacked together as I still need to split the pipes and build the Cross over/balance section just ahead of the Hot Dogs)

Is there anything you can't fabricate in that shed?

Not a whole lot ;)

A lot of times though it's more cost effective to farm the work out to places that are geared to do it!

i.e. Mufflers, last year I made a centre muffler for a mates V8 Soarer that took me quite a few hours to complete, just not worth doing it here for what Difilios charge!

Ditto on the Stub axles and axles for the IRS 9" I built for the last toy, I farmed those out to Harrop, could have done them here but I was busy doing other parts at the time that were generating funds so out they went>>> :)

Thanks :D

Same Tray is going back on, it's only 70Kg's as opposed to the original steel one at 320 Kg's...

I'll either paint it Satin Black of hit it with the Mag wheel cleaner so it oxidises the new shiny bits, I'm trying to keep as much weight out of it as possible but I won't sacrifice creature comforts to do so!

Ditching the Depleted Uranium Stock steel wheels/tires is a step in the right direction, they're 4Kg's heavier per wheel than the SSV 19's that are going on.

Righto now for a serious question...

The tail shaft does not look to have been changed or modified. Was this just luck that it was the right length, or did you place the IRS so that it was in the right place for the tail shaft length? The way I see if you did not have much option for placing the IRS, so I am thinking lucky break.

Did the wheel base change at all??

Corrcet, shaft is stock length, the IRS Flange is shorter but I wanted to run the big Tonner rear CV joint so fitted a Tonner flange so wheelbase is "stock"

I was tossing the idea around of shortening it but quite like the stability that comes with the wide track long wheelbase.

Today!

Made a start on the Rear spring seats then ran out of Grinding and Sanding discs, went to Bendigo and had to hit 6 places to get everything I needed...

Picked up some Gutter Guard stuff to keep the leaves and crap out of em.

Dropped the car back on the ground and loaded up the Tray to simulate full tanks/battery and so on, the Front is a bit low so I might change out the Springs depending on what happens with the Blower weight being added..

Always wondered WTF Holden did to make these things so damn heavy.. Traditionally Tonners have been the lightest full size cars they make, not so this time....

Mine was actually 50 Kg's heavier than my V8 Wagon back when it was a V6, cutting into the rails for the Spring seats ALL was revealed (last pic)

Thanks Justin :)

It's growing on me, I loaded the engine bay up with a simulated Blower and it only dropped another 10mm so I'll take a touch more out of the rear to maintain the same stance!

Today!

Nothing much to show yet it's just the "Daily Grind" prepping the rails for the new Spring Seats, I spent the morning boxing in the internal rails I cut through yesterday, probably not needed but overkill is good when it's my ass on the line!

Today End!

Decided to skip dinner and push on and get it done :)

Finished up at 10:45pm, IRS is mounted, Shocks are mounted, Spring Seats are done, Reinforced the Chassis where I had to notch it in 2 planes so it should be stronger than stock, I'll snap some pics tomorrow after I clean up the shed.

Umm errr ahhh well you see.....

Nuh uh, I was up at my usual time, bolted the tray on loaded it up, I had dropped it too much in the rear so made up some 10mm shims to go under the springs and noticed ....

I had SCREWED the pooch on the spring seats so badly... :(

All of my IRS cars for the last 15+ years have been double A arm rear so move in a straight line, slipped my mind totally that the Commodore IRS is swing axle and travels in an Arc... DOH I placed the seats vertical above the swing arm seat...

I worked out a "fix" but need to buy more plate to do it as one of the pieces I have left is 10mm too short.... ARGHHHH

Got pissed off/depressed so watched Al pull his Soarer apart to fit the Blower, got a little bit of "Blower Envy" so pulled the Intake off mine so I could Trial Fit the Stealth and sort out the Belt run and where the Idler shall live!

Been helping Al since then, have his Blower on!

Today End!

After the weekend's debacle/s (Soarer sneezed a blower gasket)

I did a trip down to Melbourne to collect some of the hard to find up here consumables, also bought a fireproof Welding Jacket (better late then never)

Picked up a "spare" engine stand for the L98 rebuild as mine is covered in V6 ugliness, Called into Harrop's to give the guys an update on the project and what I have planned for the Idler mount.

Shot back up to Bendigo and collected some more Steel so I can correct last week's BrainFart..

Just threw a huge Aged Rump Steak on the BBQ for dinner :D

Good work on the soarer install, just curious was this a kit or a bitsa?

Only reason I ask be it irrelevant now we tried to do a mates years ago and the only producers of a full kit so to speak in Aus were aec supercars ( the blokes who put the v8s into mx5s) and they flat out refused to sell a kit or give any details so we pulled the 8 and it got a monster 2jz put in it lol.

My Mate had the Manifold made in Canada, it's a "kit" just not a very comprehensive one, we had to make a bunch of parts for it, the manifold is a bit questionable as it's quite warped, the Canadian told my mate that it all pulls down flat when installed....

Maybe so when it's T0/annealed but it's had a couple of weeks to harden back up so I'm not sure.

LMAO Mike, I don't dwell, I move onwards/upwards always :D

Wrote the last Multi$/year project car off a couple of weeks before moving house last year with only 700 Km's on it... put it down to "shit happens" brushed myself off and started again.

Thanks on the wheels, I'm really happy with the choice and I think the larger rubber sets them off compared to the o-rings that were on the same wheels I tried on the Wagon!

No probs Z!

I've made a bunch of 7M I-6 manifolds in the past and no matter what I tried always had warpage so ended up machining the flange to get them flat enough to seal so have my doubts..

Pity Bullet won't sell intakes on their own.

Yeah I just don't get it, a sale is a sale surely they don't have just enough intakes cast for the Kits... it's not like there's a huge market for blown uz's either, having said that their kits aren't too exe.

zorro
06-12-2011, 07:15 AM
I'd say the market is small so they would do minimum ordering, in saying that likewise wouldn't hurt to throw a few together for retail, even their na trumpet setup would be cool.

I'd say the uz getting well on and the availability of ls based motors and parts for too much of a steal these days to get to the same area power wise the jap v8s just aren't a viable option. A mate put a vh45 into his 300zx, made his own headers, bellhousing and custom fabbed a dry sump setup but drive the thing for a week and put the vg30tt back in

Yep last car had a 410rwkw 7M that took many many years to develop so it would stay together, decided to do something "different" looked at a uz but dismissed it as a lot of work for +1000cc, went L98 instead.

Today!

All going well till it wasn't #2.... ARGHHHH I HATE this Disc Sander..

Working at about head height, hooked a corner it kicked back and I managed to break it's fall.... with my face.. :(

Full on tourettes this time had a tanty and heaved it across the shed and out the door, thought I'd broken my nose.. (again)

Nah just a couple of cuts from the edge and an abrasion on the side of my nose (gonna hurt like a bitch later)

Sad thing is I still have to go back out after lunch and finish what I was doing when it got me..

http://ij.supramania.com/public/prog283.jpgMmm. That all looks much better. I gather you've added the bridge above the spring top seat, which should do the job, but, without wanting to add to your problems it seems to me that the location of the top mounts for the shocks are now determining a "falling-rate" effect for the shocks, due to the arc of the lower control arm.... It almost seems to me that the top-shock-mount needs to come to the other side of the chassis-rail that it's currently mounted to...
Maybe you've drawn it up to the contrary, but from the photos, that what it looks like to me...
I think I'd also like to see a gusset on the rails above the drive-shaft....:D
Sorry :)

IJ.

Thanks for the input Seldo,

Yep added in the bridges along with another box on the sides of the rails directly above the springs, along with reboxing the internal structure don't think it's going anywhere.

Stock Holden IRS Geometry on the Springs/Shocks, Due to the ARC the LCA follows I don't think there is much falling Spring rate to it, I had them set up Rising rate (top perch vertical above the lower) but even after 1 weekend of sitting on the ground it was deforming the top spring eye and the bump stops didn't line up.

The "rails" are the fuel tank mounts and I think the 4mm plate used is enough due to being canted inwards so no real need to gusset it up ;)

Have you done anything with the ride height at the front? It looks damn close to perfect.

I am toying with the idea of putting an Adventra driveline in a Coupe (just so that I can go spastic with it and not have to worry about rooting up an original Coupe 4) and the high suspension on the Adventra concerns me, I do not really want to have to put all the Coupe4 stuff in it to get it low. But if I could get it looking like yours I would be a happy man..

So what did you do? if anything?

Thanks
