View Full Version : Tune auto - A6 settings
Hi - I am looking to get my A6 tuned. I have read that shift times and shift pressures can be changed but not sure what this means to the driving experience. I want "normal" to be as smooth as possible for driving in peak hour traffic. "Sports" mode to be firm changes that are held longer and "manual" to be very firm. Responsive/quick to change in 'normal' and 'sports' modes when I put my foot down. I am not sure what can or cannot be changed for each mode. What should I ask my tuner? Thanks for any advice.

i'd call craigs auto's and see who they recommend tuning the boxes. otherwise i'd stay well clear of anyone who promises to know what they are doing.
i know in melb the recommend DTM in geelong.

Sounds like you just answered your own question though....I guess just repeat to him what you have said there and see what he says....
my car has had a tune by a forum sponsor - engine and auto was done as part of the tune. car performs really well - very happy with the performance. the auto has improved a lot but is not exactly what i expected. so want to know what is possible to set my expectations (which could be too high).

Can be done just go back to your tuner and describe what you want and be prepared to pay for it.
Other thing to consider is the A6 wasn't put in them for semi-auto or spirited use but for economy. These things aren't the same as a ferrari or Lamborghini box designed to be true semi auto so it's only a matter of time before something gives, that's the 'other' price to consider
I am sure my tuner with adjust but not sure if there is anything to adjust as as you pointed out - they are designed for economy so my expectations may be too high. my experience with ferrari and lamborghini is limited to by old matchbox cars :) so can not compare but am hoping for a little more hence my post to understand what can or can not be adjusted.

if you want neck snapping changes like shift kitted T700's that chirp the tyres on each shift, the electronically controlled auto's don't behave like that. they are soo tunable but they still perform when required, but you may not nececessarily feel like it.
do you know what i'm saying?!

There is plenty to adjust and will act dependent on your right foot or you have it in D, sport or manual.
What has been found with these unless the right precautions are taken in the tune they won't last too long and my point on the Ferrari/Lamborghini comparison is these boxes are still just an automatic with an override to shift manually, this is what hurts an auto box mainly downshifting. The higher end semi-autos are in laymans terms a manual box with electric/pneumatics controlling the clutch and gear selector.

I'd suggest working with your current tuner rather than going off to someone else to get it done. Plenty of people out there with T43 tuning ability....

wanna make a small wager on that?
i put a tune in my uncles 6l80 that does exactly that in sports mode.
mine is very similar but with a 3600 stall it takes some of the harshness out of it.

i know you can. but it doesn't have to act like that on part throttle and only WOT ;) . then at WOT there is less likelihood that you feel it, especially with a convertor.
whereas an old skool mechanical auto you have that harshness all the time.

My old SSV Ute had the auto tuned by Sam’s Performance and it chirped the tyres in second and third under acceleration every time with ease and that was with 285/30/20 tyres on the rear.
In saying that, it’s still a pretty ordinary box compared to other makes of cars I’ve driven.

My VE SS Ute also did this when tuned, was abit scary actually as the back end would go out abit sideways.

With my small cam even with ESP on (I never turn it off due to my disabilities) mine would also do that. In fact, at the 2011 Shootout at Heathcote with Falken Azeni "semi slicks" (I say that coz they don't seem to offer a lot of grip :() it was even getting sideways on the change to 4th!
My VX chirped into second when "Power" button on (Chipmaster mail order tune). My VE does in "Sport" but the gear changes just seem a bit sedated. I was hoping for more from a custom dyno tune. Happy with the engine tune just not the auto tune. I think I need to drive another VE A6 with a auto tune to compare.

depends on the tuner, but they 'may' not have touched the auto tune unless you specified as this will add $$'s.

Hmm my senator chirps 2nd and gives a decent push into 3rd and it is completely standard.....
Auto tune was done - I can feel an improvement - but as I said was hoping for more. eg changes in manual are not as firm as I thought they would be.

when i got mine done we raised the pressures across the board as well as the shifts times over a year experimenting with settings
and even with all shifts times and pressures the same across the Bord
it behaves different in all modes D is the smoothest quickest firmest shift
for me ?
don't get me wrong they are all a lot better but D is the nicest

Just go back to your tuner and tell him you want them firmer. Many people don't want them back jarringly firm so unless you told him you wanted them really firm he probably opted for his normal A6 tune.

I will admit, the only problem I have with mine is getting it to kick down gears in D with a bit of throttle. It seems to prefer to sit in the same gear and labour unless your going up a hill.
Not sure if anyone else's is the same.

mine was just the opposite would kick down at the sliest bit of throttle
so had it altered
