Just wondering how long an ls1 engine normally lives for? Its in an 04 vz ss crewee and is just the family bus, its done about 195xxx kms and tows fairly often. and give it sh*t occasionally to clean it out. give a little lifter noise on startup in the morning and occasionally give a burning oil smell but nothing major. whens a good time for a rebuild?

There are some VHA/VHB Caprice limos that have clocked up 500,000kms without major dramas, but of course they have the advantage of doing long trips or like taxis running for extended periods without cooling down and hence avoiding the primary killer - lots of cold starts.

Towing won't help, but then again we've had a Nissan Patrol 4.2 petrol from new, converted to LPG very early on, which has now done 350,000km, many of them towing a triple horse float with usually one or two but occasionally three horses and apart from the head coming off at around 300,000km it's still going strong!! :goodjob:

There were some old threads on high mileage LS1s - will see if I can dig some up for you. Basically I think a compression test will tell you when it needs a rebuild.

V8s usually have a very long life expectancy - as my dad said "A Holden V8 isn't any good until you cook it....twice"!! :P

With nearly 300K on my V6 Adventra, I'd expect my LS1 to be good for 500!

But with 37K on my LS1 now I doubt it'll get there.

My cousin has a VS with over 400,000km on it and it still has not had to have one major thing done, just had regular services.
My LS1 is at 180,000km and still going strong, I hope to get over 300,000km out of her.

I read on another forum a bloke had a VT SS LS1, had 420,000km on it, he reckons he only has had to replace the water pump twice in it and something else that was minor. All I have heard and read that LS1 can go over 300,000km easily.

How longs a piece of string? You give it grief it will break down, baby it will last longer, but tough engines!

Any engine can wear prematurely, the key is the level of service or over service is the answer to longevity.

My 04 caprice has done almost 240,000. I drive it every day and have no problems with it. I fully expect it to last 350,000+ kms before I even consider replacing the engine.

Mine is low k's but old, 99 VT with 130,000

Spends 30+ weeks of the year in the garage on a battery charger while I'm overseas.

Still goes well, no majors.

Great to hear the LS1 lasts so long. I was a little concerned as mine has 220K on the clock and was expecting a rebuild at about 300K. If I can get another 100K out of her beyond that I will be ecstatic.

I got 198xxx out of mine before it died. It went out with an impressive bang so I can't be mad at it. :)

Honestly, V8 engine traditionally are based around longevity, revving lower, and under less labour - therefore, hypothetically lasting longer.

High revving ricers traditionally rev higher and are more prone to earlier wear.

Think about a truck - redline at 1900RPM and last a million K's!

I'd expect around 500K plus for a V8 - which is what I said above... Having said that, my engine had a new bottom end at 22K!!!

220+ on my LS1 in the wagon, runs perfectly doesn't use Oil or water so with some care I can see it going another 200, helps that it was a sales rep car in the country and most of my driving is Open road/freeway.

mines a 220/220. Made 270rwkw through a auto box

Mine was a 224/224 (pretty sure) made 286 rwkw with a manual. And then had the nitrous added made 374 rwkw, 500hp. Ran 11.0 and it was my daily.

Those are the exact two cams I was looking at. Hopefully I will experience similar figures with 200k+ on the clock sometime next year *crosses fingers*

Seen an LS1 Statesman with 500,000km's still driving. Only driven around Canberra on short trips most of it's life. So lot's or short trips, cold starts. Worst thing about it is it leaks from every gasket it's got. Still runs fine though.

My VX SS, has done 206,000km, still going strong, done a water pump and a few other minor things, still running strong.

Had one with over 670,000kms, one with 375,000 and currently have one that has just kicked over 300,000 kms. That shoud give you some idea. By the way the statesman that had over 670,000kms on it went alot better than my old vx senator sig with 145,000kms on it. I proved that on more than one occasion, much to the disgust of the senators new owner.

This is a great thread, mine is coming up for 135k and given it clocks up most of those km running up the freeway to Sydney and back it looks like I have many years left :)

Got 157000 km and adding 1000+ a week on the commute from Goulburn to Canberra. Hasn't missed a beat yet.
