Hi guys,
After much discussion in the technical forum regarding my new wheel issues, Im looking to get a set of hub rings put on my car to stop the steering wheel from vibrating at high speeds.
My new wheels are suited for BMW and so the bore size is 72.6mm and the commodores use
69.5mm so I just need to know if there is a place that can supply me with a set of hub rings or if i can order them from somewhere in Australia. i dont want to wait for over a week getting them from the USA.
Cheers

What about where you bought the wheels from?
Also, I'd be carefully driving the car until you get the hubs sorted.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't fix it, I had a similar issue on a VZ SS..
Most local wheel/tyre shops should be able to supply the hub rings for you pretty quickly..

does that mean with hubrings the hub takes the weight rather than the bolts?

yes as they should always for safety. the bolts are to keep the wheel on the hub, not to take the load. Easy to shear the bolts off if wheel is not loaded on the hub. tight fit on the hub = good

has anyone actually sheared wheel studs and lost a wheel solely attributed to the lack of hubcentric rings on a properly torqued up wheel?

Not that I know of, but my steering wheel is shuddering madly and this is the last thing i can think of doing to stop it. If the wheel doesnt fit on the hub properly theres always a risk from a few nuts snapping and Id rather that not happen while Im driving.

I know of two people that have sheared studs..

Yes I have seen bolts shear.. they are designed to go on the hub for a reason.

Is there a way of figuring out if you need hub rings or not? I have wheel shake at around 100-110km, but I always assumed it was some other problem.

Whether your wheels shake or not shouldn't decide if you need hub rings or not.
If your wheels bore is bigger by more than 1or 2mm than that of the hub bore outside diameter then you need hub rings.
Look at one of the most common brake upgrades around for commodores, using VT-VZ brakes on VR/VS's.
The difference in bore holes is 2.5mm but with out the special brake hub centric rings the brakes will shudder badly.
And yes you can use both the brake hub rings with wheel hub rings on the same hub (VR/VS's) as the 72.5mm hub size on VT/VZ brakes only applies to the brake thickness part of VT-VZ hubs.
After that thickness on VT hubs the hub decreases in size to 70mm which is the same wheel bore size for all VB-VZ commodores.

Brake hub rings and wheel hub rings are the same thing? Or different?

What's a brake hub ring?
The hub rings being spoken about here are hub rings that sit between the brake rotors and the wheels to locate the wheels correctly onto the vehicle hub.
Hub centric rings are manufactured so that when they are installed on a vehicle, the wheels are located directly off of the centre flange of the brake drum or rotor. This is done to insure that the outer beads of the wheel are concentric with the wheel bearings. The result is a much truer, better balanced tire/wheel assembly. This is very important with modern high tech suspension systems.

They are similar but different.
The brake rings only really apply to VR/VS when fitting VT brakes.
VT hubs have a step on the hub so where the disc hat sits the hub is 72.5mm dia but from the outer face of the disc the hub is only 70mm (the part the wheel sits on).
The VR/VS hub is 70mm for all the hub so the brake rings take up that 2.5mm so the discs sits perfectly central, these are brake rings:
http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=brake+rings&_sacat=See-All-Categories
The normal hubcentric rings (like those below) are only used on the wheel part of the hub and sit against the outer face of the brake disc and are used to take up any difference between the hub size (VB-VZ 70mm) and what ever the inside bore dia the wheel has.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hub-Centric-HubCentric-Rings-Ring-73mm-OD-70-1mm-ID-70-/110696140122?hash=item19c6010d5a&item=110696140122&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr
This is to make sure the wheel is centred properly and to also take the weight of the wheel off the studs.

Just picked up my car from there. Had a rotation, wheel alignment and a puncture fixed. Picked up the car and the rims were dirty. The front were filthy. The moron then tells me it's brake dust when it's visibly grease. Won't be going back there again.
