Probably not helpful, but catch a flight up friday night and drive back over the weekend? One way carry on baggage is like $60 and then $300 in fuel?

However, if for any reason the car breaks down, however unlikely that is, it could end up turning into a nightmarishly expensive trip!!! At the mercy of mechanics who can ream you by a) overcharging and b) not do the job properly because they know if it goes wrong in a few days again you are unlikely to come back to claim under warranty. Also the potential for a night or four's extra accommodation etc..
The only way I'd do it is with a car that's still under factory warranty because at least you know you're covered for repair costs. A long trip of course also adds kms which can hurt a little when you come to sell.

While the breakdown is a possibility, the extra kms really don't come into it. After all, how many kms are we really talking about? Not enough to make any difference to resale.

The direction your car is going, it should be very reasonable cost wise because the trucks are running back empty a lot. I always used Toll but I do like Ceva because they use subbie drivers who give a damn because if they damage a car it's THEIR money. Toll uses their own fleet and drivers - I know, I was one of them. Most guys at Toll are great but there's the usual population.... I had a minor damage on my Monaro and Toll fought so hard at first but the proof is in the vehicle survey at teh start, and at the end. I got it fixed for $130 using one of the dentless guys.
The big players in car transport seem to be:
Toll (formerly Finemores)
Ceva (formerly TNT)
Patrick (part of Asciano)

make sure you get photos just before it's loaded (and just after, if there's any damage).

The actual way to manage this is to ensure the vehicle survey is accurate and complete at both ends, particularly as you hand teh car in. Make sure you don't get bullied into being slack on it.
