Just finished changing the tranny oil went from Dex 3 to AC Delco Dex 6, besides the box now being quieter and the shifts alot better, the back lash has now gone.
A while ago a I spoke to a exp diff person who told me that the diff causing the back lash was a myth as it is a open spinner.
I thought I may have been dreaming so drove around the estate for 30 minutes in and out of roundabouts, on the gas, off the gas, and its now gone.
Anyone else found this ?????

How much did the Dex 6 set you back and how much did you end up using to fill the tranny?
Ive found mine has a bit of backlash especially when coming on and off the throttle but only when you coming up to round-a-bouts or in shopping car parks which is a bit of a pain in the arse really.

Cannot say how much I paid as I got thru someone I know, all I can say is if you are buying the AC Delco Dex 6 dont pay more than $100 for 8 ltrs.
But more importantly start from scratch and a clean slate.
1) transfer case oil
2) Diff's
3) Engine
4) Power Steering
With the Tranny if the oil is blackish, get the thing flushed and get a B&M Deep Pan which means you can then change the oil yourself once it is on. Tuff Car Parts $275 Delivered speak to Justin.
The only problem you may have and I am not a expert is when they drop the pan if the there is a heap of crap in there and the oil is that bad you may have problems with the Dex 6 being a synth oil and thinner and the tranny slipping as the tranny is worn and the tolerances are to great and you need a thicker oil, Dex 3.
My oil was only slightly off color when I had the deep pan put on and I put Dex 3 back in. But I made the choice that if it was the wrong one and I then went to Dex 6 it would be cheaper for me to do it.
The refill is 5 liters and the deep pan holds a extra 3 = 8 liters and I drained 7 ltrs out. I will drain it again before I go away on the holidays and job done.
Will let you know how I go Wed as I will be pulling the van and see how the back lash goes then, if still nothing then, I reckon the Dex 6 fixed it.

Quick question, what is backlash? Can you give a brief description.
I've come from a 5 speed auto SV6 into the Cross 8. I was expecting it to be a fair bit more, lets call it brutal, and it is, but it's due for a trans service in Jan, so maybe the change wouldn't hurt. Fluid colour and level is good though.

Best described as a clunk when off the gas then on the gas, such as roundabouts.
What year Cross 8 ?

Thanks for that, and yes, I have felt it in mine, but not very often, but I might pay more attention now.

get a tune and get them to tweak your gear changes

get a tune and get them to tweak your gear changes
I have read that can fix the lash as well, not really sure if we should call it lash as they are a open spinner and not a LSD, the technical term being clunk.
This might be a cheaper alternative to those that are not going to get a tune, having said that though those damn buses need it.
Has yours ever had the "clunk"
Cheers
nope , changes are silky smooth , even when held flat and they change at 6200 .
They were smooth before tune , you hardly felt it change idling around ,
only thing was sports mode was skizo at 80 kays ,
after tune , even better , i was a bit skeptical about having the box tweaked ,
was quite surprised , but a tweaked box always runs smoother , big up Oz

Still no clunk this morning when I dropped the van off but thats another saga, will post temps later in My Ride, but stuck in peak hour traffic for an hour didnt go over 94deg. On the way back at 100km 71deg, the lowest its been, normally about 80deg at 100km no load.
Was planning on Tune and auto tweak by Chev before xmas but the roller door hinges snapped and it was all over after that, coming out tomorrow to fix the roller door.
Cannot catch a break at the moment.

With the wipers on your cross 8 are they the adjustable intermittent type or just the standard type of wiper stalk?
I was thinking about putting an adjustable one on my cross 8 but not sure how to go about it weather it would work or not.
Any ideas?
cheers

Depends on what BCM you have it "might" just be a switch and 1 wire+ programming at Holden, at worst it's a BCM 2 Key remotes a switch and a wire + programming!

No speed sensitive wipers on the cross 8, adventra only

Umm, my intermittent wipers are speed variable. Possibly deleted on later models?

Had a look twice in the options at start up and def aint there, VZ or VY ?
All comes down to the BCM fitted, the "LUX" has speed sensitive, that's what I used.

Hey guys just moved house so it's been three weeks for the net to be hooked back up.
Well I ended up buying a second hand standard wiper stem for the cross 8 and the day it arrived my old stem decided it was going to work again so no idea what is going on there but atleast i have the backup stem for the future.
Now Im taking the mrs camping in a few weekends and we are thinking on going camping on the beach.
Im gunna take the cross 8 to see how well it handles itself on the loose sand but what Im wondering is when I drop the tyre pressure what should I drop the pressure to?
Any ideas?
Still can't get photo's up as I have only been on site for a little over a month now but hopefully I can get some up real soon.
Cheers

I wouldn't drop down to anything lower than 20psi.

Ok cool will fiddle with it on the sand and see how it goes but i will stay above the 20psi.
Thanks Pete

+1 on around 20psi. I played around at Stockton in my old Pathfinder, admittedly much bigger rubber, but around 20 seemed to work best. Are you carrying a small compressor with you? Just in case 20 is too low.
I took mine through some big mud puddles a couple of weeks back, and rather than hit them at speed so momentum carries me through, I tried stopping in the middle, just to see if If it got difficult. No problem at all. Just eased the foot in and it drove out at under 5 km/h without any difficulty. Then I found some very uneven ground to test out the wheel travel and traction aids, great, opposite wheels with no grip and the traction control locked them up and pulled me out the 2 that had grip, but I could hear it banging away as it locked up the free spinning wheels.
Let us know how you go on the sand,I'm keen to try mine on Stockton Beach, the only place I ever got my Pathfinder bogged!

Yeah gunna go grab one of those little air compressors before I hit the beach just incase i do go too low plus when Im finished on the beach and hit the raod again i can pump them back up again to highway running. Lol I hope I don't get bogged cos stockton beach is exactly where im heading. lol I wont go crazy though just stick to terrain i think it can handle and stay away from all the loose stuff hey.
Prob be a few weekends before we head out so will keep you informed on how it goes.
Thanks mate

Well guys I'm back from stockton beach and I can happily say that I was very impressed with my cross 8. Just before we jumped on the beach I lowered my tyre pressure to 25psi (and for some reason they were at 44 psi in the front is that normal as I only had new tyres chucked on friday?) and headed off. The road in was nice smooth gravel than about a km into it, it was boggy with deep sand and heavily chopped up with other users. As I approached the boggy sand I noticed two cars in my rear view mirror so i stopped an let them past as I didn't want to get bogged an block them. Once they passed i slipped it into 2nd gear and went for it, with about 300 to 400 mtrs of chopped up sand we were doing roughly 15 to 20kmh I think as I was more watching my surroundings and listening to the engine revs and the brakes grabbing the faster spinning wheel. I did have my doubts wheather it would have made it through the sand but once we got going I was confident we could get through. So looks like I will be doing a heap more beach driving now, I wont be tackling dunes anytime soon not until I venture with a friend with a dedicated 4wd. Once we got on the beach front it was interesting to see other 4wders reactions, watching them scratch their heads in amazement how the hell a holden ute (crewman) got down there lol was hilarious, not to mention before we hit the beach the servo bloke was asking me a million questions about the cross 8 (towing capacity, is it awd?, fuel econ, and etc) Once I get a few more posts in hopefully I can post the pics I took of it.
I hope this has helped any other adventra or cross 8 drivers who have pondered the thought of driving through sand.
Cheers

So i had my transmission serviced this morning, I asked to put Dex 6 in, he said it's not required as he uses a very good synthetic. I said "humour me", just put the Dex 6 in and I'll see how it goes.
Wow!
I didn't realize how rough it was till it was changed. Very smooth, even in Power mode with full throttle changes. I'm very impressed.
Many thanks to chocco for that bit of info.

Sounds like it does wonders, when my car goes in for service I may do the same thing.
Is it known to run cooler as well?
Red Beard

I'm not sure if it runs cooler, but I may be using slightly less fuel, but I need to confirm this over longer distances. I have an Ultragauge, so I know exactly how much fuel I use to and from work, and it seems to be using slightly less, even with some heavy foot work.

Hi Guys, I'm back.
In regards to running cooler yes it does between 5 - 8deg, on the way up to Bright it was 40deg, air con going, 150ltrs of fuel, waeco and a Bernese Mountain Dog in the back of the ute towing 2400kg, auto sat on 100deg hitting 105deg when dropping to 3rd/2nd on the hills. I used 80 ltrs on the way up and 72 ltrs on the way back, 360km each way.
I will be upgrading my cooler as I want it to sit around 90deg on the flat hitting 100deg on the hills and I still have one maybe 2 more oil changes before all the Dex 3 is gone at the moment it is 60/40.
This is what I am thinking of putting in dont laugh !!!!!!!

The oil cooler your talking about. Should keep the trans cooler but will it affect temp of the water with it infront of the radiator?
chocco

It shouldnt people are using both tranny and PWR steering coolers totaling about the same size. Going to try and fit it in the mouth down the bottom. It is taller than the mouth but about half of it will be in direct air flow.
$180 delivered from the states.
