View Full Version : Penrite oils - sludging still an issue?

I'm looking to use Penrite synthetic (10W40, because my car likes this grade) for my next oil change but doing a quick search I found a few old threads which said previous Penrite users have had bad sludging problems in their LS motors.

Is this still an issue with Penrite oils?

I notice now that some Penrite oils are 'SN' API rated, which is a recent change as far as I can see. One benefit of this, apparently, is 'improved sludge control'.

Any opinions on whether Penrite is better than it used to be?

Sludge is only ever an issue if you don't do frequent oil changes and that applies to all brands of oil

I agree with what you say above, but some of those old threads the OP is refering to were in cars that had regular 5000km oil changes. I have used Penrite in several cars over the years, but have been a bit reluctant to use it in my SS after reading some of those threads on here and other Commodore forums. It may have changed since though.

I have. Een using and running penrite in my cars for 20+yrs and never had a problem it's only cars that haven't been regularly serviced that you get splurging in

My VE had penrite in it for the regular 15,000 services or watever it was, no sludging problems.

I don't know about sludge, but Penrite used to have an issue with carbon deposits not being flushed back to the sump. I used to use it many years ago and would end up with a black coating inside the rocker cover that you could wipe off with a cloth. At the time I swapped to Wakefields ( now MartiniRacing ) and have never gone back to Penrite, because the Martini oil has never let me down. I do run Penrite in the gearbox though.

Simon.

Thanks for the replies.

I usually change the oil every 6 months or 5-7,000kms anyway so sounds like it wont be an issue.

Thing I like about Penrite oils is, even though they have a SM or SN API rating, they still have a healthy amount of ZDDP. Which I think is a good thing :D:
