just put some in the car today.
I have a stockpile in the garage, but needed a filter so went to supercrap.
10w/60 was hella expensive. Boxing day is coming up so i'll buy at their usual sale.
off topic,: Oil filters. z154 $8.50, z160 $14.95

The barn usually has 20% off on boxing day if you can wait.
Also Repco always has 10% off for RACV and I assume other state members

I just changed to the 5/40 after using the 10/60 for a couple of years. My engine is MUCH quieter cold and warm. I will be continuing to use it from now on.

i use the nulon 15w 50 , motor sounds the best it ever has, lots of the lifter roller rocker noise gone plus its cheaper than the 10w 60.

I have found them quieter with HPR 5 full synth then the thicker stuff too(and its only 43 $ for 5L so grab a heap boxin day:)) and its always hot here. People forget these motors have tight main bearing clearances and most time cam bearing clearances from factory.

Like a couple of the guys above, I found my previous LS1 was quieter on 10W40 than 10W60.
For a comparison of the oils mentioned and a couple other common ones I found, here are their viscosities at 100C.
Magnatec 5W30 9.55 cSt
Edge 5W30 12.0
Edge 0W40 13.1
Edge 5W40 14.0
Magnatec 10W40 14.5
HPR 5W40 15.0
HPR 10W50 19.0
Nulon 15W50 19.0
Edge 10W60 24.0
No doubt the 50 and 60 weight oils are a good thing at high operating temps such as at track days or whatever, where the viscosity decreases markedly as temp increases. But for normal street use I think I'll stick with a good 40.
Here is a handy calculator if you want to see the effect of temp on viscosity.

Good point BlownVR. The oil temp in my VY barely gets above 90, and I've never seen it above 100. From what I've read, VE's seem to run hotter though, which may explain why VE's like the 10W60 better

thinner oil will fill the lifters quicker thus reducing noise on slightly dodgy ones.
They should go overhead cams and get rid of the lifter issues that seem to dog all the LS motors.

I live in Townsville and my OIL temps are rising with the rising outside temps. After a good squirt ( highway ) I have seen temps as high as 112 deg C, Most of the time I average around 107 deg. Outside temps were around 37-38 with 85-90% humidity. Turtle Shell is ON.
I am going to try the Nulon 15-50 and see how that goes at next change, usually around 7500k's for me.

I've noticed in the tuning software that the VE displayed oil temp can be either from the sensor, or a calculated value, or a combination (average?) of the two. The standard setting is combination.
My temps usually get to about 110 in normal driving at this time of year. Maybe 115 on a stinking hot day. I think a 5W40 is probably ok for that. But last time I gave it a good flogging doing some speed limiter testing it got to 130 degrees briefly. If it was getting that on an occasional or regular basis I'd go to a 10W50 at least. I don't plan on driving it like that again though.

You can also sign up to the repco email list (http://catalogues.repco.com.au/home.html) and they'll send you a 20% off coupon - not sure if it comes through email or post though, so may not reach you before the boxing day sales.

True, and I'll therefore most likely sign up for my next lot of 10w60, but for now I guess I'll be going to Supercheap on Boxing Day if it's 20% off then.

Your choice of course but I and many others on here are very happy to use 10w60 to reduce wear - see http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=97841, especially on advice from our resident Mainlube oil expert. :yup:

But last time I gave it a good flogging doing some speed limiter testing it got to 130 degrees briefly.
Ive installed an engine oil cooler and a PWR radiator. After 3 hours non-stop around sandown on a reasonably hot day (mid 30s) i never saw oil/coolant temp over 100 degrees. Admittedly the engine is "only" producing 275rwkw/700nm+ but considering there were no "cool down laps" and only the occasional driver change/refuel, i must say i was very impressed. That said, i didnt have a cooler on the diff/gearbox and as a result managed to kill the mainlube oil in both (and the gearbox).
New system will have an oil cooler for gearbox and diff. That will give my car a total of 7 radiators :).
Still surprises me how many of you guys are happy to spend thousands (or even tens of thousands) on power parts, but dont think its worth spending a little more on something to protect your engine in any condition.
Keep everything cool with good clean oils and they should last forever. Cut corners can only end badly in the long run. (Thats just my opinion anyway).

I've got a Ve SS ute with nearly 60K on the clock. For 50K I've use Nulon 10/40w. I just put a TK cam in it and switched to 15/50w Nulon with a K&N filter and It's going great. A mate has a VZ Clubsport with 40K on the clock and he reckons mines quieter that his. I have heard alot about the Castrol Edge. Just not game to swap. Considering its run Nulon it's whole life.

No difference IMHO. Isn't it only a different additive, in which case I'd expect the main difference would be in long term engine wear etc.?

yes it's an old QUESTION but!
i've been using 10w60 for the last 40k's and put in by mistake a 5w30:hide: after 5000 k's this weekend i dropped the oil (thats when i realised i put the 5w30 in) the oil was black! well a lot darker than it usually is after the same k's. normally a very light brown. have now put a 10w40 in. always use castrol edge.
