IMHO X1 is better value. We drove both and the X1 seems similar in size, better proportions than the X3, and cheaper :)

If you are looking at a 2009, then you would get a near new or demo X1 for the same money. Although the new X3 is a much better proposition but $$$$.

Can't comment on the X3 but the same engine in my wife's X5 is amazing. It can haul a 2tonne bus to 100km/h in around 8 sec and can do over 1000km per tank.

The only thing I will say against it is the engine noise from outside the car at idle. I've been outside in the middle of the night saying goodbye and the diesel 'chatter' is very noticable at idle. From inside the car you can't hear it.
