Has anyone else had this happen at low speed or could it hav been something other than road debris?........I'm very dark on this.:cussing:
Just wandered of from the lights on a main road traveling behind 5-6 other cars (got to a max of 40-50km/h when it happened). Car if front of me was FrWD & not accelerating hard.

Anythings possible, I have had 2 go in about 6months on my jeep, ($2750rrp) both were cracked like yours, 1st one, there were no cars in sight, 2nd one was a dam small Rock off the back of a truck
Whatever it was , looks to have hit hard!

Happened to me a few years back in my corolla in the exact same spot and same damage, seen it (the stone/rock) come out from the front guard/tyre area on a vx heading the opposite way, happened all in slow motion it seemed at the time.
Made a good noise when it struck too.

Annoying, but not a big deal. Id rather have to replace a windscreen than get a panel resparyed. Which insurance company are you with? I get one free windscreen replacement per year with shannons.
Otherwise a screen shouldnt be too expensive (Theres a mob in melbourne who charge $150 for common windscreens).

A potential problem discussed on here previously is that of whoever replaces it scratching through the paint while removing the old windscreen and giving rust a place to get a foothold underneath.

Hi it would have been the car going the other way u and him may being doing 50ks each = 100 head to head but the tires will be spining a lot faster in rotation could come off the tire like a bullet my thoughts cheers.

You are write on the money there, followed a 4x4 coming to a set of lights and smack one broken screen doing 40kms. I have had 3 screens in 60000kms, such is life......Ned.

It happens...I finally got a new truck at work, driving from the pickup depot via the gateway, a stone about 20cm dia. hit the windscreen right in front of my face, the whole event was like in slow motion...new windscreen required..and had to wait for a new screen from who knows where... as an ole saying goes-- it's the ones in slow motion you get to talk about..the time you have no idea what happened really suck...

Nah, my insurance is'nt that generous. Was quoted $175 fitted.:deal:
Was also quoted 75 to pump a bit of jism into it, but he said it would'nt be much use cos the crack had traveled to far.
Hey, thanks for the heads-up Wonky!;)

Ummm. No. the rock would still impact at 50 kph regardless of the target objects speed.

My last cracked windscreen was caused by a truck leaving a road work zone and heading my way. Rocks get caught up in the deep tread of truck tyres, then when they hit a certain speed centrifugal force takes over and the rock is dislodged from the tread and flies forward in the direction of the rotation of the tyre.
By the way...the road builder/contractor paid for my new windscreen when I stopped at the site office. Its a regular occurence.

Well, yes and no.
I see your point in relation to relative velocity (as proven by mythbusters) but if a rock is flung forward from the tyre, (see my post below) it will be travelling at a higher speed than the velocity of the truck. The speed will differentiate depending on the tyre height and the rolling velocity of the outer edge of the tyre. But I agree, adding the speeds of both objects together to claim a impact velocity does not work.

Some times rocks are squeezed out from under the tyre they can attain some serious velocity similar to rifle shots.

True,i had enough time to think about where it was going to hit and not IF it will hit and also if i should bother ducking or not (i didn`t):1peek:

I often wonder what would happen if you were riding a pushy and got hit in the face by a flung rock...
