Hi all,

I've mocked up a 3D render of an SS based grille. I'm surprised it isn't available as an alternative to the Chev grille for those wanting to keep the Holden roots, but like the look of the Chev grille...

Cant seem to find a way to post images on this forum, so please check out the images on my blog.

Forgive the inaccuracies in the model, I didn't make it, but it served my purpose here.

EDIT: I cant post a link either... I need 4 more posts.

With a space after http: to get past the forum bot http: //docosart.blogspot.com/2011/12/ss-grille-test.html (thanks cashie)

Maybe you can put spaces in your blog address?

Even the SSV simply has "SS" where it has SS badges - the V is a separate badge.

I'd prefer this to be clean, as is the chev grille

This is true, but only up until MY09 , my MY10 has the new style badge

So are you in a position to get these manufactured from your rendering?

I'm talking about this one:

That's not the case if you look at this image SS in front of the rear guard

vecommodore.com/redline/2011-ve-ssv-redline-ute-2.jpg

I can rapid prototype from 3D, but it would be too expensive / involved to do the entire grille, and I'd need accurate CAD data of the original. Unless you could buy the chev grill without the bow tie, but I think it's one piece?

So, no, not really... just putting it out there.

Sorry, I've not seen that before, it's not on the sides of the current SSV?

My ute is an SS (with leather etc) so I'd have no interest in making one personally

Been the back badge of the SSV since early 09 dude

Fair enough. If someone was to manufacture them, cool, you just be looking at twice the setup cost for two different grilles... unless someone major like Holden themselves were to do it.

You could possibly do it buy buying a Chev grille, grinding the bow tie off, filling the holes, sanding etc, then sticking a rear SS or SSV badge on it I guess?

Is it viable to even make the one in your pics?
If so, still would be keen

I'm not sure to be honest. I make jewellery via rapid prototyping, but to do something like this, as a finished, sale-able product, you'd be looking at a big $$

Unless you can mod an existing product.

I was hoping, if I put it out there, someone with more manufacturing knowledge might be able to chime in.

The model I've used here isn't accurate, it's just eyeballed, so it's only good for visualizing. I could have just Photoshopped it.

China will make it.

Something like that would sell well, perhaps just a plain one nothing on it.

That is what I was after, I like the Chev style chrome strip, without a badge at all would be quite good. That way you don't have to make multiple versions for those that want SS, SSV SV6 etc. you could always add the badge later and stick it on if you need one.

Look at how many change the grill, a universal one just chrome strip could sell thousands.

I love my grille.

Hated the dinner plate sized lion.

Couldn't do a Bow Tie this is Australia mate :)

So I went with this and was happy with the end result.

I replied to this before, but it never showed up...

I agree, its more the horizontal strip than the logo... a big round circle just doesnt work as well aesthetically speaking.

This was an option but I like the chrome strip of the Chev Grill but I don't like the badge being there. but at least its not dinner plate size.

Chrome strip grill with a Small holden badge might be the go also, but would need Holden approval to make it unless you stick that on later also.

You know I just had an idea.

Chev grill remove the badge and stick the SSV badge in its place.

IF its the right size to look OK ? If not some other suitable badge off any model Commodore (not dinner plate size). Does the Chev logo even come off? cut /grind it off, but then even more important the new badge cover that.

Doco

Chev badge and chrome strip are one part moulded (I think) you'd have to grind it off.

Need a badge 13cm long by 3 high to replace it. SSV is 15 cm long
(up to 5 high but would get air hang over 3 cm on the ends, due to the chev logo shape)

Anyone have a damaged Chev grill to experiment on?

This site lists a lot of badges but none really suitable to replace the Chev logo? http://trickshiftperformance.com.au/zencart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3

I'd still prefer to see a grille that was just the honeycomb. Five years and a new model and nobody has made a proper replacement.

There has been some great 'ideas' come to life like Ziggy's centre badge but still no full replacement grill. I know it would be expensive to tool but look how many times it gets discussed on here. I reckon it would have paid for itself

I can model a 3D SS badge in a smaller size and get it prototyped in black plastic for probably $30 each (estimate) you could then paint the edges silver, but I dont know how it would sit over the top of the bow tie... kind of a tacky band aid solution really.

Can anyone tell me if the chrome strip in the Chev grille is seperate? or is the grille mostly one piece?

I might make a little project of this in the new year.

I'd buy a chev grille, get it scanned, model an SS badge to clip on over the top, then make it available on shapeways.com

Anyone know if there's copyright implications of producing a non genuine SS badge?

Anyone know why some of my replies appear right away, while others trigger a message saying a moderator will have to approve it? I have 3 replies that haven't shown up yet.

Been trying to think of a custom badge to Fit the shape.

Chrome only or Chrome with some sort of SS
Ignore the 2nd badge and the quick ms paint only chop. Just for an idea of the look (not so sure now), somehow make it no longer looking like the Chev shape.

Spot on!!
I reckon they look to "try hard" with all these SS on front badges etc.. theres a VY executive in town with the bowtie badge removed and ss in its place and thats all i think of when i see these style badges.

The VE SS badge is the right shape.

The point of scanning the grille allows me to 3D model an SS badge that will cover the bowtie and clip on in some way, it would be purpose made to fit the Chevy grille... not the most efficient way to do it, in that you'd have to buy a chevy grille, then an additional part to cover it.

Ideally, if a standalone chrome strip grille was available, you could stick on whatever pre-existing badge you wanted to.
