Went looking at cars again today as I am getting bored with my ls1,I saw a turbo xr6 that was tempting as a 2nd car,I don't really want two cars-so I reckon I am looking at a $4,000 change over if I was 2 trade in
So if I spend that $4,000 on my ls1 how much bang will I get for my $$'s-I know it won't match a turbo or supercharger - will the spend
give me noticable gains??

Youre still going to need to spend money of the XR6 to get it to go any where.

I hear the same thing from guys with over cammed street ls1's. Hypocrites.

There is plenty of info on this forum regarding upgrades to GM product, and rough pricing.
As for bringing up the subject of Ford on a Holden forum.....

==my apologies for the Ford thing==I did try finding threads on pricing with no success, wasn't sure where to look-even did an advanced search-that's why I posted,=it would be appreciated if someone can point me in the direction of the applicable forum heading-hopefully it is up to date -- Stephen

im an out and out holden man with a cammed ls2 and wouldnt change it for the world, however, bang for your buck, ford turbo, cant beat it, flash tune it and a better exhaust and it will get hooking no worries

Just turbo the LS1. Turbo 6 is good but turbo 8 is better ;)
Have any mods been done to your LS1 or is it stock? Depending on the quality of what you buy, for $4k you could get an OTR, full exhaust and tune with some change left over. This could add around 50rwkw. This will make very noticeable difference and also make it a much nicer car to drive.

=== Basically stock, just larger Genie cat back exhaust a few years ago, -Murat (Marrano's) said the dyno figure from "elsewhere" a bit generous-
but the car goes better, K&N Filter,Dyno, auto change points tightened/shortened and new plugs n Top Gun leads (all last Oct) = but some days seems lazy-I wonder about the pump fuel being the right octane-98
If I do bulk changes I will get a new dyno tune

Funny you should mention that-I was doing some pricing after a post by someone else telling me to do some research myself,I am after other's opinions also-turbo's come on boost much earlier now apparently but a supercharger is a cheaper "add on"

I used the "F" word and had an unfriendly response-in this thread I think
I found a turbo ute that tempts me but I can probably "boost" mine for not much more than what it will cost me to change over and I know my cars history

It will all depend and what you want at the end of the day......
If you have an older LS1 ( which will be the vast majority now that it's almost 6 years since the last car with one was sold new ), then the car as a whole will be starting to feel loose. If the XR6 is a newer model than the car you have, then the swap will bring the benefit of the newer, younger car. If the cars are the same age though, then it'll come down to how they have been treated and as you say, it's better knowing the cars history.
Over all, $4K is not going to get a huge amount of work unless you're talking DIY for a lot of it. Any mod that improves the motor's air flow, will bring gains. I'd start with a good set of headers / extractors to feed the current cat back ( assuming it's in good nick ). Then I'd probably look at a cam/springs package and get the lot tuned. Another option is to forgo the cam / springs and do a diff ratio change. All up these would be around the $4k mark including labor. People will be shouting for an OTR, but if on a budget, it's not going to make a huge difference to over all power when compared to a "two hole mod", so you may as well save the cash there.
If you stretched the budget to say $6K and were happy to DIY, you might squeeze in a turbo package, but it'd be a pretty cheap one and wouldn't include a fuel system upgrade. It may be OK if you keep the boost low, but people have a tendency of wanting to see what a little more boost will do, then it goes bang...... The XR6 and $2K of mods would be a pretty powerful car, but it's not going to be the same down low a a well tuned V8. If you drive with the average RPM up over 2500 all the time, then the turbo will feel great. If you cruise around at 1600, then maybe the V8 will feel better ( yes I am generalising ).
Simon.

thank's swingtan==
It is nice to get an in depth reply that I understand and makes sense 2 me.
I have seen other questions regarding diff changes and the effect it has on the speedo so I need to do more research on that
--much appreciated -Stephen

If you want a ratio change I'll sell you a complete diff for $800 with 3.9:1 that's just been recoed and shimmed. Will come with receipt of being done a week ago. Easy DIY job for little cost.

Or even better get an exhaust done on it. Get your OTR intake stick it in the back, take a drive down to buy my diff and through me an extra $500 and I will through the diff in for you while your down here and give you a maffless tune and fix your speedo. Cheapest mods you'll get. $1300 and you will have 3.9's and a mafless tune and still have your original diff to sell for $200-300. So you would get away with it cheap as.

This is a very tempting offer and I will sort out when I can get down there from Sydney if I decide that's the way I want to go
By getting the exhaust done I guess you mean headers and not just cat back,so I will have to try and do that this Friday afternoon or Saturday-the car in for a gearbox service Friday and I know they won't have time to do an exhaust as I have left it 2 late 2 book it in with the box service,I will ask them how much time they need-don't know what time I will get it back to go do the exhaust elsewhere
-They will probably have an OTR of their own in stock and may be able to fit it Friday, although I may not gain much air flow if compared against my K&N Filter.I can discuss this with the workshop on Friday
IF you read this post you can leave your phone number here or send me a PM

The only weekday I am off is a Friday so I would leave early Friday to come down and borrow a GPS and hope it has Canberra in it

Can't comment on the LS1 side of things with $4k worth of upgrades, but can on the Turbo.
My old 2005 BA2 XR6 Turbo 6 Speed Manual came with 201 rwkw stock and for $2,300 it went up to 288 rwkw which included, nizpro cobra valve springs, custom tune and F6 CAI, everything else remained stock. Well maintained the car never gave me any issues except for the diff bushes, but this is expected with the aggressive power delivery.
Probably could have installed a larger fuel pump, wastegate and dump pipe which would have got me well over the 300rwkw mark.

3 cars,
VU ss, m6
BA xr6t, a4
Z32 300zx, m5
All 3 hovering around the 400hp mark and in a straight line on a roll would be door to door. From a standstill my Ute would have the jump but by 2nd the other 2 would be right on my quarters with the xr6t if held long enough would slowly edge ahead.
The xr6t was no big dollar spend, it had a herrod cat back that came with the car, gutted cat, injectors, 2nd hand f6 inter cooler and air box. Pushed 420ish hp atw with valve float on std springs and backed down to 406 safe.
The drawback was the a4s gearing, if possible find a manual or a6. Other than that great car for 17k initial (ba mk2, leather, premium sound, 54000klms) and spent less than 2k on it

Personally id stick with the ls1 and throw a few dollars at it, provided it is a good base to start with. If you were to change over to an xrt who knows what problems you could be buying, just chasing a few easy kw??
I just saw an ad on these forums for a supercharger kit for $3500...its already sold but if you are prepared to wait there are always bargains coming up on here

-=== I was quoted $3500 JUST to do a cam but was told the result would be pretty good-a post above yours sounds like an interesting way to go but I will still need to pay 4 a full exhaust and the OTR on top of what was quoted ($1300) and $800 for the diff-over 4K I am guessing all up
