Am looking at getting a Subaru VX.

My wife has severe back problems and need to sell the R8.

We took one for a test drive yesterday and what a drive, fantastic.

Does anyone have any opinions on the subaru?

Little is known at the moment, but like most Subarus it should be a good solid thing. Looks not too bad for a modern Subie either!

Is the VX meant to replace the Outback?

We just took delivery of a brand new XT Premium Forester on the weekend....I can't stop driving it....I love it.

Now I have the best of both worlds...all wheel drive turbo & rear wheel drive V8

I've had a couple of Subaru's both were liberty's (92 RS Turbo, and a 2000 RX Liberty which I converted to a 2L twin turbo.

Both fantastic build quality. The RS had over 300 thou on the clock when I sold it, it still had original motor and gearbox!, drove well and still held its own. Inside was still looked good for its age.
The 2000 liberty was simply awesome! I did however spend too much money modding it though! Whoops!

Subaru's have only got better, they will last forever, the cabins have got nicer inside, far more mod cons. I am not a fan of the new looks however.

The after sales service I have received from Subaru has always been good, even when I took my heavily modded liberty in, their mechanic's had no problems sorting it out and getting back to me quickly.

I would highly recommend them.

I've always liked the jacked up subbies, I think they're just an Imprezza with ground clearance aren't they. Like the RV of older models.

Had a current XTP myself. With a tune and X-Force cat back they are a stout little performer!

OK just so we are clear it is called an XV. For Extreme Vehicle lol . It is a bit bigger than an ordinary Impreza hatch but has something like 75mm more ground clearance. It's a bit like comparing a Mitsubishi Lancer to the ASX. It's direct competitors are cars like Rav 4, ASX, Captiva, iX35 et el.

Subaru are quite reliable, especially the N/A engines. Due to the boxer engine you need to throw through an upper engine cleaner a bit more reguarly than you would otherwise. Servicing can be a bit pricey so see if you can wrangle a deal for cheap fixedf price servicing or something.

Yes I was wondering. I thought the Subaru VX was a quite rare coupe sold here about 15 odd years ago.

The coupe you are referring to was the SVX. The XV seems to get pretty good write ups, I have seen a couple on the road last week, a black one and an orange one, look good.

There are some good ones going round of that size, VW Tiguan is a little bigger, my neighbour has a diesel one and won't stop raving on about it. He also has an BMW X5 Diesel and said he would rather drive the VW when he didnt need the space/size.
I think the XV is a little smaller than the Tiguan though.

Yeah when I first saw the thread title I was thinking about the Subaru Coupe from the 90's

Hey Martin, what sort of kWs can be expected at all fours with a tune and cat back?
Also can the factory ECU be tuned or do I need to go aftermarket?

The tune thing is an unknown at this point.
What I can tell you is that in 2012 you will not get an aftermarket computer to work properly in a current vehicle, so scrap that idea :teach:
Doesnt matter whether its a Commodore, a Subaru, or a Ferrari - wont happen.

Thanks Martin. My Forester was actually a 2011 plated runout with 10 measly kms on it. I've contacted MRT and they use an ECUTEK ECU to tune and are pretty pricey (compared to LS1 tunes anyway)..not sure if the ECUtek is a piggy back or total replacement..

ECUTEK is a flash tune like an edit and is notoriously expensive as the tuners pay a $600 - $700 (or something along those lines) licensing fee per tune. It also locks your ECU so that it can no longer be read or rewritten.

Other tuning options exist for around 50% of the price. Join up OzFoz and I have a 60 page thread on tuning Foresters there :)

I have heard ECUTEK described as "aids" on suby forums, once you've got it you cant get rid of it.

MRT are know for being a bit pricy but I believe they cover the warranty on your car if Subaru turns down a warranty claim due to the mods, or something along those lines anyway.

Heres the result of a proper flash tune I carried out on my MY10 XTP Forry -

As a guide we sell that tune mail order for $450 :)

That sounds awesome Martin. Is that price for ECU exchange?
Also can the general mechanics/techs at Subaru know if the car has been retuned if they log onto the ECU?

As part of it you purchase a programming cable ($160) and we supply you a laptop program so you can flash between stock and tuned whenever you want :)
Its all very nice and seamless

Damn that's an awesome price Martin. I love the idea that I can flash it back to stock whenever I want. Good job.
