Noticed a large van parked on the side of a major road (facing the wrong way) with some type of equipment on a stand pointing towards the road. Didn't look like a speed camera, thought it might be something to do with monitoring noise? Any ideas?

ive seen them aswell, there new VW vans. bloke at work told me they were licence plate checkers and would check for unregistered cars, outstanding fines for the vehicle owner etc. don't know if that's true but when i saw one there was like another 3 cop cars very close bye and were even pulling up an old granny in her nissan micra!

Reminds me of that one about a year or so ago where someone wanted certain wheels photoshopped onto their car - legendary pic that I can't find right now, but had workmates looking at me as I laughed out loud.
They have one (or more) of these vans in SA; saw it a couple of months back on top of the Mawson Lakes railway overpass with a few patrol cars doing good business at the bottom. Within half a sec it runs the rego plate to check the car is registered, and also runs the registered owner to ensure they are licenced and have no warrants. I don't have a problem with this - unless things have changed, if rego has elapsed by more than 4 weeks then the car has no 3rd party insurance.

I am fairly sure that pic is photoshopped, just doesnt quite look right.also he said the van was facing the wrong way. You have the van facing the right way and the cars/arrows going the wrong way

 @ kindergarden - how ironic. :D
I'd agree they're probably licence checkers. Saw one a month or two ago just beyond Dandy-Hastings Rd and Ballarto Rd intersection and there were a group of police cars and police further up the road towards the BP station at Hall Rd. I'm all for it - get unlicensed drivers and unregistered cars off the road!! :goodjob:

I've never seen a van like that down here, but they have them quite often attached to the side of patrol cars with another vehicle pulling cars over 100m up the road.

I don't think any of us have actually seen a van like that - still, it made me laugh.
Those traffic scanners have been around for a while - I seem to recall a trial of on on South Terrace, Fremantle in around 2005ish.

hahaha Good pick up lol
There needs to be a "Like" button for the whole thread lol
On topic... QPS are using something similar (or at least they were trialling it a while back anyway) in there patrol cars. It reads rego plates and alerts the Officers in the car if there are any issues. I say good on em.
