Was talking about it and knowing my luck something let go. Took off and heard a big bang from the rear. Car drives forward fine but when turning right I get a cluck noise but doesn't seem to do it going left. Would this definitely be the diff and if so, what's is the cheapest option. Rebuild mine or get a replacement from holmart? Worst time now as I have no money too.

Talks that's all I needed to know. Just don't know why it makes a noise only turning right

Given your http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?155771 thread I'm guessing it has let go as we suspected it would sooner or later. Depending on how bad it is internally you're probably going to be better with a brand new one and hopefully sell your 3.7 gears to recoup some money assuming they're still OK.

Now the question is will you put another stocker back in it's place? (cheaper option, plenty on ebay) or save up some cash rebuild and upgrade yours?

He already had a 3.7 in his A6 (which is why I said he may be able to recoup some money selling his old 3.7 gears if he buys a new diff).

Seeing it's already given way (asuming it was a stoker), wouldn't it be better to go for 'option b' and just save some cash and just upgrade it? That's what i'd do.

Just my two cents. :hide:

 I guess people reckon I'm smoking something because they keep ignoring the fact it already has 3.7s - see http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?141544 post #2 plus various posts he has done re drag times etc..

Fact that he's running 3.7 diff gears Wonky doesn't make his diff any stronger, if he replaces his diff with a new one running 3.7 then there is a good chance that he has wasted his money because it may brake again with drag racing, I myself will look into strengthening mine when it gives way which it will one day.

From calling around - there's not much you can do to these. Tru trac is not an option as I don't have 1500 just for the lsd

Yeah, agree 3.7s doesn't make them any stronger, even though new ones are shot peened. In fact from long experience reading on here about people who've gone to 3.7s in their non HSVs (usually from 3.45 M6, the OP is the only person I know of with an A6 who has stuck with 3.7) they've had a relatively high percentage of problems. If anything I reckon the OP should downgrade back to either 3.27 or 3.45 for longevity, plus people who've tried everything from 2.92 through to 3.7 in their A6s at the drags reckon the HSV A6 ratio of 3.27 gives the best times! :)

Is that fact wonks that 3.27 give you the best times? Spoke to John at protek ages ago and he said if he could do it again he would have gone 3.27 over the 3.45 he had. Not sure if anyone can confirm this

Yep, there was a thread on here somewhere, possibly in the Drag section, in which somebody tried all ratios out with their car at the drags and found 3.27 gave the best times. I did have a 3.27 I was going to put in mine but in the end decided to stick with my 3.45, even if it does mean I lose a fraction on the track, but given I only got to the track once a year for the Nats I love the 3.45 on the road.

Spot on Wonky I've heard the same thing that combined with an A6 anything from 3.7's up make first-second gears to short, and for road use i would go 3.45's aswell.

i had 3.46's in my calais years ago and they were perfect for the street.
