View Full Version : Would you fit an aftermarket sunroof??

Have had a quick look through the search results and couldnt quite find what I was after.
I am after experiences or opinions regarding the install of an aftermarket sunroof. My lovely wife would like to get one for the R8 for my birthday after we fell in love with them in a Caprice we test drove.
After looking round, we think we have settled on the idea of a Hollandia 700 series.
Has anyone had any major issues with them?? We were talking about the recall this morning which was making us think thats its a pretty permanent mod and whether it was worth going ahead with.
Im basically asking for both positive and negative feedback to sunroofs in general to help sway the decision either way.
Thanks in advance
Hi I have the Webasto Hollandia 700 Sunroof in My Senator, R8 tourer & VY SS Wgn. have also had same sunroof in several previous cars. Never had a problom with any, I did have the recall done on all three so each got a new glass panel fitted other then that all is good.
I've never understood sunroofs .
so a no from me .

I had never had a sunroof before I got my VT II Clubsport with factory sunroof (so I don't know what type it is) but I absolutely love it. Unless it is raining, the first thing I do after starting the car is open the sunroof. I usually just tilt it up at the back a bit (it can also slide backwards leaving the whole thing open) and it is surprising how much air flow they let in. Much better than winding down a window which puts the wind in your face (which can be good sometimes but in Tassie you don't often need that much airflow). I have jumped in the car on a hot day and it is absolutely stinking inside and 3 seconds with the sunroof up it is cool again (relatively speaking). I think it is because it works like a chimney. All of the heat can quickly escape since hot air rises whereas windows rely on wind flowing through the car from one side to the other.
As long as it is a professional job and doesn't leak (which mine doesn't even after 12 years of age) and it has the slide-able roof which allows you to block it off and no light gets in, then go for it.

I don't like the idea of cutting a big whole in a roof and welding bits in.
I would rather spend my money on something else, even performance mods.

Got one in my my E3 maloo, love it. Fully programmable ie: can set it to open to any desired position with one touch. Sliding sunshade is a must. Use it all the time.

I'll never own a car without a sunroof again ... love 'em!
I've had 2 aftermarket roofs, one in an SSV wagon (factory won't fit them?) and one in our Grange (it was a demo and didn't have a sunroof fitted at factory) ... both have worked perfectly with zero issues!
Sunroofs seem to be one of those things that only people that have never had one dislike ... you find very few people that get one and don't love it instantly!

They make it sooo much harder to put a cage in.
Having said that I wish I had one in my car. Had one in one of my previuos cars and loved it.

Cheers for all the replies so far guys :) Its the cutting a big hole in the roof part thats the most worrying I think
So far the quotes have been about the $2800 mark with the car needed for 2-3 days for the work. If you have used anyone that hsa done a great job in ACT or NSW, feel free to mention them as everyone seems to say the same thing.

They've gone up :( , was looking not so long ago.
Cheap ebay one, but only good for replacing a factory one from what I understand, this guy gets some good stuff in from time to time aswell:

Most of the factory sunroofs are cut in anyway and a lot used to be done by HSV under licence from Hollandia for Holden.
Some calais' and I remember the V series Adventura's had factory pressed roof sections for sunroof.
You can tell the difference in that the cut in ones have a border around the edge.
The pressed roof sunroof installs have a rolled edge.

i had a factory one in my old vy calais and i loved it. had the car for 2 years not a prob.
but now im also lookin into getting one put in my new car. a hole in the roof is a hole in the roof
why be worryed when a factory sunroof is put in the exact same way as an aftermarket one.
i say go for it

i wonna get the 900 in my clubby, 3500 quoted from prestige sunroof's in perth..
same thing, the cutting part i dont mind them cutting it to fit the sunroof, but I have read somewhere that it needs support brackets/framing welded in on the underside of the roof for strength?,
the thing i dont like its the welding part, hot spots can fuk your paint and if that happened your fukd.

That's right, it's not the hole itself, it's if it's a Monday or Friday sunroof and they f-ck it up.

I have a 900 fitted by prestige. They did a great job. Had it for 2 years and never had a problem and use it nearly every day. When they did the installl they repalced the whole roof lining. Would have no hesitation in using them again

I had a Hollandia 700 sunroof installed in my VX mid last year. Awesome mod, as everyone has said you will love it. The installer did a great job, I got a reconditioned roof for a really good price, 3 year warranty, new glass and no leaks or problems at all. It has a anti jam sensor, and option for a rain sensor etc. New head lining as part of the install too.
It's great to jump in the car and bring the outside environment into the car, gives it a great cruiser feel. Your passengers will stare at the view during the day and star gaze at night lol. If you don't want it open all the way then just tilt the back up for some airflow.
Go to a reputable installer and you shouldn't have any issues, my guy did a great job, no issues with structural integrity and the sunroof cassette apparently increases structural strength. The roof should be installed with proper drainage pipes etc.
I'm glad I finally did it after all the years of thinking about it.

Its not going anywhere, low kms and spent a heap on the blower kit last year..... too much to walk away from and I'm not going to give it away for a crappy trade price. So, it started fine this morning but I did get the trip computer and warning lights go off. 12.2v in the battery before I started it, so who knows whats going on. Might need to get a professional to look at it though probably not going to be easy to diagnose. I reackon thy might want to replace the BCM as a starting point.....

Ya can't go wrong with a Sunroof.....although it's rather frightening if ya watch one being fitted to your car.
Hollandia is great.....I've had a few of them fitted over the years...in Burwood, by Peter Puleo.....they used to call him "Mr Sunroof"...probably retired by now.....VERY professional.
Cheers, Pickles.

I had a sunroof in '02 VX Calais, from the receipts with the car it was fitted when the car was 6 months old, no problems with it at all apart from having the recall done(I traded the car last May).
