Hi guys I just purchased a sv300 with the the infamous callaway motor, mine has only done 39000 k's,
What do I change so it doesn't go bang, will a cam package from the likes of gm motorsport stop anything from happening

The valvesprings were of the greatest concern - do a search on C4B on this forum and plenty will be explained. Best bet is to get the valvesprings changed for some good quality aftermarket beehive springs (probably cost around $500 fitted at a shop - heaps less if you do them yourself) - no need too go all out with cam, etc, unless you really want to.
I believe the car you picked up was on Carsales recently (?) - if so, nice pick-up!
cheers

Yeah I read lots of threads on this topic, but I read cams fail, rockers fail, springs fail, so jut wasn't sure what to change Before anythin happens, thanks for your help, and it was that black one in south aus

The cams do end up failing due to the valvetrain harmonics, caused by the aggressive profile of the camshaft (for those days it was fairly aggressive) combined with the inability of the stock valvesprings to control the valves at high rpm. This, in turn, enabled the lifters to loft off the camshaft and crash back down, causing increased shock to the camshaft lobe surface. If left unattended, it would eventually cause a failure somewhere in the valvetrain. So, good springs should see you right, particularly with such low mileage on the car.
As for the car- I reckon you picked up a cracker - it looked very good in the advertisement - you'll have to get out on a few meets in the near future.

May as well change the cam and the valvetrain gear. While you're opening up the heads you may as well change the lot. You'll probably end up wanting to in the future anyway. Just spend some time picking a cam that suits your requirements (drivability vs power).

:weirdo::confused: you dont have to do all that just to change valve springs. your only taking the coils and rocker cover off to get to them.

great to hear from another SV300 owner. unfortunatly my car has just clicked over 176000kms. i wouldnt have a clue as to the history of my engine so i dont know at what km it is likely to fail but from reading heaps of threads the general thing to do is replace the springs as macca has already mentioned.
it would be great to catch up at a meet some time to see what 140000kms difference looks like in the 2 cars.

Yeah I know, I retract my comment about removing the heads (that may be overkill). But i'm just saying if you're there to change things to ensure it won't break in the future and you are already spending money on the valve train, you may as well do some more work. I believe in doing things once and doing them properly. Obviously you could get away with just a valve spring change, but that just seems like covering a wound with a bandaid to me...

I was thinking of changing the cam eventually, just got to save some coin, the car is in top nick it's still like new underneath, I'm defiantly keen for cruises or meets, should i change the valve springs straight away and put cam in later, or just do it all in one go, be about 8 weeks before cam, thanks for everyone's help

You can do it now as long as you allow for a cam in the future aka have some idea of what you want and get a spring that will suit. Obviously cheaper if your getting a performance shop to do your springs to have the cam done at the same time.

I have since lowered it a little and put my grundi plates on, I'm doing cam and some Vx gts wheels,
I don't drive it much so I'll just save super fast and get it all done at once

Very nice car mate,
Been through the CB4 drama,s,basicly the valve spring pressure isn,t enough for the roller lifter to follow the aggressive profile of the cam,the reason behind the choice of spring ,was for better fuel economy.
I found out soon after reving the engine for play,it became noisy in the lifters, after seeing the wear on the cam it was unbelievable. If your cars engine sounds quiet, you will get away with springs only.
Once this is fixed ,they are a great engine.

If your doing a cam in 8 weeks Id just wait, hell how many kays are you going to rack up on it in that time. you'll be ok

The engine is very quiet, no lifter noise or anythin, after all it's only done 39000, and I bought it off an old guy

Thats good then no noise, but 39000 doesn,t mean a thing if some lead footed old bloke was behind the wheel.
My car was low kms also, and took me a few weeks to ruin, what happens at high revs,is the lifter doesn,t follow the profile of the cam, because the springs are to weak, then it chops the cam out.
I,d be looking for a LS1 guru around your area with a good reputation, get them to have a listen,if all good keep your cam,and change springs, and all should be sweet.

Change it into a clubsport! hahaha
No mate seriously nice car. put the original motor as is in the shed - and build a lsx turbo..
i cant imagine what that car with original motor ( shitty valvetrain and all) will be worth in 20 years... there would be absolutly none around that are untouched soon - just a thought

Iv booked it in for a cam package, with pete Cochran in Ballarat, used to run race tech here, his done me a real good price, I'm thinking about a 228 230 with 112 lsa, what's your thoughts, remembering it has the 3.9 diff gears

I'll be sure to keep all the standard stuff when I change it,
Killer idea, just don't have the coin, got mortgage requirements, lol

Don't change the wheels! That's part of what makes the SV300 unique!
Cheers,
