Hi, thinking of doing a cam install on my VZ SS sedan. I have been given a quote with 4 stages. What are the recommended items that are definately needed, and what are some things shops sell you that you wont need.
Thanks

Did you try a search? There are plenty of threads on cam changes. Check the DIY section for how-to guides, they have pretty much all of the basic info.

No i didnt, 3 recommendations of cam are 224/228 lsa 112,228/230 lsa 112, 224/230 lsa 114. Would the stage 1 of the following be okay, camshaft, dual valve springs, coolant, and tuning. Would they have to include gaskets because these are not priced but in stage 2 they have water pump gaskets and front cover gaskets.

Gaskets aren't needed for either the water pump or the timing cover unless they are rooted. They are O ringed items

Stage 2 they want to do oil, filter, spark plugs, crank bolt, and water pump gaskets and front cover gaskets. This adds $350 to stage 1, and they say this should be the bare minimum you should do.

Do these cam choices look okay for a VZ SS with 1 5/8 tri y extractors, dual 2 1/2, and vcm pod airbox.

Get some other quotes, you may find they put this one into perspective for you.
And you really should search as there is a lot of really good info already here on this common, common topic. You might find that forum members who could offer good advice might not feel the need to as it’s all been said before. You may miss out on some good common knowledge info.

To the OP.....
Please don't take this the wrong way but picking out, installing a camshaft and tuning a car after is not like plugging in a USB computer device where the computer just does a plug and play install.
There are plenty of guys who would not attempt doing a cam change at home and by the questions you have asked I don't think you should be attempting the job.
Not only do you need a reasonable mechanical knowledge, you will also need plenty of special tools just to do the install.
My best advice would be to do some research into workshops and cam packages, talk to the guys at those workshops and get them to supply, fit and tune a cam package for you, otherwise I can imagine you might run into plenty of problems.
Good luck whichever way you go with it mate.

It sounds like he is going to get it installed by who ever is giving him these quotes....Thats how it reads in post #5.
Anyway, to the op....You will definatly need valve springs,They dont have to be double springs, just good singles that can take whatever lift these cams offer. As for timing chain and oil pump.....you dont really have to change but it would be peace of mind depending on how many k's they have on them. If you want to dial the cam in you will need an aftermarket timing set. Or you could just install it straight up (dot to dot). No need for lifters or push rods. And then you will need to re tune it. I think all of the cams you have mentioned are highly recommened.

The install is a quote from a performance shop . They have given me cam suggestions and prices for the basic package - stage 1, to stage 4, with various additions through the stages. I have a special price for the mafless tune to finish the job which makes me inclined to go with them. I was just needing to know whether the basics which is stage 1 will be sufficient for me, or do i need or the extras such as oil pump, pushrods etc. And no i havent got any other quotes yet.

my BARE MINIMUM:
cam
springs
pushrods
balancer bolt
and timing set and oil pump if the motor has high ks
deffinetly do a service after the change, coolant can be reused if it isnt to old or contaminated.
i didnt do the pump or chain in mine but honestly if my motor goes pop just gives me an excuse to get a 6L or 6.2L
The cost of chain and pump seem cheaper than I thought - could you throw up the shops name?

IMHO youd be crazy not to replace the water pump gaskets as a bare minimum. theyre not that expensive and if the old 1s leak, youve got to pull it apart again

Mines been off 3 times. Still going strong. But yes I suppose it is cheap and easy to replace them.
