Just spent the last hour or so reading about the new Chrysler 300 SRT8. It sounds the bomb - 347KW, 639Nm, 6.4 litre V8 Hemi and a price tag at around 60K they say. This is news that makes me smile..........I understand that they are not everbody's cup of tea, but I for sure will be taking one for a test spin. 60K is an awesome price and for once I maybe able to afford a brand newie! Don't get me wrong, I love my GTS........but time marches on, nothing stands still and things change.......like maybe a Chrysler 300 SRT8 parked in the garage.

I read the same and have spent many hours googling pictures and videos of them over in America. I think the 60k price tag will be blown out a bit by dealer delivery and all the other shit we get stung with. I've also read conflicting reports on the transmission. One fella said the gearbox generally doesn't know what to do when you push hard and another said it was a joy to drive. Also there is supposed to be an option for an 8, yes 8 speed ZF transmission a few months after initial release in the ooo ess aye. I tell you what, now I am able to salary sacrifice with my employer, if you can get one of these new SRT-8 300C's at or around 60k (even demo) I will be rolling in one.

I hope the interior on these have picked up in quality, real let down in previous models the poorly finished plastics.

I think it's going to be a awesome rig, we already booked our test drive, I know for a fact, we will own a 300c srt8 or a grand Cherokee srt8, just Ned to see the two in the flesh, having owned both vehicles in there non srt8 form, they are a underrated car, both the grand Cherokee limited and the 300c were better than anything I have driven in the Holden stable, def not as much of a race track car, but for on the road, kills them

sixlta

I tend to disagree, I owned the last of the 300c and now own the grand Cherokee, (new model), plastics are better fit and finish than in my series 2 ssv!

I might just be picky but the dash plastics, fake wood grain etc just aren't good enough. From base model to srt-8.

Otherwise they are a great car and I looked at them prior to buying the senator.

Is nice. Very nice. You can see the carbon fibre on the dash trim, no idea if it is just a sticker or some semi decent thing. As long as the Australian heat doesn't root it, it should look pretty damn good in person. Also love the info-tainment screen.

I know what your saying, but at least everything meets up, everything is solid, no rattles, my ssv has that may parts that don't line up, that rattle, that have sharp edges, and don't get me started on the iq, both the jeep and the 300c standard feature list is well and truly beyond anything you will get in a Holden/hsv/ford/fpv, as mentioned almost every car maker these days have gone to plastic/faux wood,

I agree there they do have a lot more in areas. What chassis are they running in the new models, they based off the e-class mercs again?

Ash, I don't know if you've had a chance to go down to a Chrysler/Jeep dealership but the new generation of vehicles really have stepped up their game in fit and finish. I won't say it's perfect but it's miles ahead of a lot of things in their price range and definitely a close match to the prestige brands now. I'm loving my Grand Cherokee at the moment. Easily the best car I've owned.
I would agree with your comment on their previous gen vehicles but not the current stuff. Will be interesting to see how they go outside of the warranty period. That will be the next big test.

Don't mind it at all. The big issue is the value for money equation which makes HSVs look badly overpriced-especially when the better transmission becomes available. I would consider one of these definitely given the price compared with a Clubsport let alone a GTS!

These are great looking cars, didnt mind the old one either. I knew a guy who had the old version and he sold it because of the horrendous ongoing servicing costs. Some prices for standard services he quoted me were outrageous. Im talking $800 plus just for a standard service. Just one thing to consider which a lot of people dont seem to take into account.

Im only going on heresay, havent seen the servicing prices myself so I am happy to be corrected.

Yep, I quite like the look of the new one. Wasnt a big fan of the last one. I think the front has improved the most to make me like it.

I do suspect it will be more than $60k though

Reading up on the 6.4 litre hemi it was designed with (391 kW) and (691 N·m) torque but is detuned, this is a heap of power for a naturally aspirated engine. Imgaine what a tune will do for these new cars

Also watch this video of this big black dude test driving it in the US, its funny as he drives it hard the dealer is an idiot too:)

Hows the ridiculous pricing there to here though, Top of the range Challenger with all the options ~$51-52K, on carsales here theres a 2010 Challenger SRT8 for near $150k, nearly a $100k difference, somethings not right there and it wouldn't sell easily with the competition in that price bracket.

Ill Have a Charger srt8 SuperBee in Yellow thanks.

if only you could buy them here for that price would solve my problem of what car i should buy next

I just saw that challenger on carsales. sure it's nice but it's not "$150k nice"

On another note, since reading this thread ive grown a new liking to the 300C when its done nicely.
Thinkin bout fixing up the clubsport and selling it to buy one of these. Probably a 05-07 model with a 5.7 or 6.1 if at the right price.
Would love it in a manual though, gonna be tough goin back to an auto.

Has anyone got pros/cons of these things?

I had a 2010 Challenger for a week and it got plenty of looks. As an overall package it went ok. Downsides were poor visibility when reversing, and the 5 speed auto is just not good enough. It often got confused as to what gear it should be in and reminded me of Borg-Warners of 20 years ago. So if you're contemplating a new 300, I'd suggest waiting for the eight speed option. It's available now in Chargers in the U.S. so shouldn't be to far away in 300's.

03-04-2012, 04:27 PM
I had the 2011 300c v8, had the 5speed as well, never really had a issue with it, have heard the 8 speed is a great box, I think with that much torque, shouldn't be a issue, on the other hand, the 5 speed in the new jeep is a junk box, no torque mean heaps of hunting, and talk about a long 1st, can pull 98kmh befor it hits 2nd

SUZUKI MALISHA
05-04-2012, 02:33 AM
Oh and it comes standard with 245 tyres

Being objective about it, for people who like the looks and style of it which is of course the matter of one's own opinion, there's a fair bit of technology and equipment in there. Xenon headlights, high quality stereo, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, heated and cooled seats, heated and cooled cup holders for goodness sake, and the playstation HSV style graphics G Force read outs e.t.c. to name a few of the more noteable items.

On the gearbox matter the V6 Chrysler 300 models allready have the ZF 8 Speed, wonder why they didn't fit it to the SRT8 ??? - Cost for the higher torque version of that gearbox perhaps

The Chrysler does look good, though an FPV would be in another performance league with both cars given an aftermarket tune.

Looks like a great car....TOP value too.
If I was in the market though, I'd be getting the story on the Aus release for that 8 speed auto before I put my order in.
Cheers, Pickles.

Aus release initially will be 5 speed auto which is terrible. Great engine though. Puts HSV and FPV to shame!

How many gears is enough in car? If a 10 speed auto comes out will the make it better then an 8 speed? An 8 speed on a manual would be pushing it.

It's not automatically a better car because it has more gears. In this case it is just that the original 5 speed auto is a complete piece of crap so anything made by ZF would be a godsend, in this case it is an 8 speed unit which will handle the torque. The 5 speed auto hunts and bumps and crashes and generally doesn't know what it is trying to do.

The new multi speed boxes coming out are for two reasons ... one is that its easier for the box to mate to the engine in a multiple of driving conditions and the other is that governments are demanding cars get better fuel economy every year, so a 300C with and 8 speed box is going to be cruising on the highway at a lower RPM than a 5 speed one ... thus saving fuel.
