I just went out to check something under the bonnet and found the MAF wire that goes into the induction pipe was hanging free. The car was going o.k. so I just wonder what effect the sensor not reading will have on the performance
I think the mechanic may have left it out when doing the throttle body clean last week

Is the engine light on on the dash?
If not it may have had a maffless tune at some stage in the past.

Just reading that post of yours again, unsure, were you talking
about the wiring plug for the maf or the IAT sensor plug?

I don't know,it just in the pipe between the throttle body and what I thought was the MAF,mbe it the air flow meter

if it is not the wiring plug which goes directly into the maf
and it is a little 2 pin plug which plugs into a thing in the actual air pipe it will be the IAT (intake air temperature) sensor.
Just plug it back in mate, no dramas.

You will see a much larger plug going into the maf.
