View Full Version : Alternative to Filtermag?

I've read plenty on here about filtermag products, and their excellent feedback. Being mounted to the outside of the filter, they need to be rare earth magnets as a lot of force it lost through the filter housing.

Has anyone looked at the http://oilfiltermagnets.com/ offering?

I'm thinking a couple of http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=LM1616&keywords=magnet&form=KEYWORD 12 peices for $7. Drop a couple in and don't worry about trying to fish them out when changing filters.

What does everyone think?

Very interesting! I run a filtermag but can appreciate the point about some of the force of the magnets being lost just with clamping onto the outside of the filter, though they are very strong. Would be interested to hear Steve from Mainlube's take on these.

I would not put any thing inside an oil filter it might disrupt the oil flow all comments welcome..

Alot of info on how good they are, a little too much for my liking though, marketing sounds better than the product lol...

Would be great to get some input from those in the industry. Also good point about disrupting the oil flow. I'm wondering if they could come dislodged at high oil pressure/flow and end up in a wrong place. The benefit of the external magnet is if they should come away it drops onto the stone guard. Which I wonder if that is a bad thing for the g/box and trans ones. Imaging a heap of metal stuck on the inside the the housing and the magnet drops from hitting a speed bump, all that metal getting sucked through in one big hit.

If you are looking into it ensure you get a magnet rated to the temperature it will operate at as if you go outside the bounds they will demagnetise. Have a look at the link below.

I reckon I would be happier with the magnet on the outside on my engine filter though. Might be just me being paranoid? I don't reckon things like filtermag would come off as they are very strong magnets. I have one in my t56 but it is glued into the bung not just sitting in there.

In my experience there is no way a proper Filtermag could come off a new clean filter as they are very strongly magnetised. If they did somehow come off I'm sure they'd do no damage to any other components even if they did happen to hit something.

Wonks he's not talking about the mag doing the damage if it fell off, he means if it did and it collected metal particles they would be released and go thru the system in that one hit.

Though I'm sure a few people have a filter magnet and have never lost one off of there filter.

That's it, looking at the auto one it seems a flat square that would need to be attached to the bottom of the trans pan. I can imagine scraping a speed hemp and dragging it off, releasing all those metal particles in 1 hit into the pickup. (worst case scenario)

Aaron said to me after he'd had a look at this, that the FliterMag is cheaper and better over the life of the vehicle, I agree

FilterMag lasts forever :)

I'm not bias over this, any magnet will help, which is better? FilterMag, Why? .....

SURFACE AREA

FilterMag wraps round the filter collecting from half the oil going through your engine.

I run 2 FilterMags so all oil going through my engines pass over a high temp rare earth magnet, how efficient?? we open them with the filter opener, and see lots of fine metal that could go through the filter.

With a magnet in the middle your surface area is reduced greatly, therefore you can't clean as much oil.

If you replace the magnet with each change then sooner or later it will cost more than FilterMag.

So .... great idea, but not as efficient as FilterMag.

With $100,000 engines of today, do the best you can, it will always save money.

The only reason I would use this system is if I couldn't afford FilterMag.

Cheers
