Ok guys, I am looking at getting my windows tinted on the Senator. However I have been trying to gain an understanding on what is legal and what is illegal from the many threads on here. What I have gathered is... There are many different answers. For example some say; "You must have 35% on the two drivers side windows, but the rest can be as dark as you like" and "It has to be 35% all around" and the odd muppet who says "Who cares bro 35% looks like s*** just go 5% on every window including the windscreen...fully sik subwoofer"

Moving on...

I went to look up the "official" rules and regulations for window tinting on the VicRoads website and it directed me to the following page.

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/A4CCADAA-27D3-4EB6-8AE2-17F69F9DAE78/0/VSI2web.pdf

It states that 35% of light must be coming through from every window that the driver can look through when driving, changing lanes etc.
But that was from November 2009 and I believe no new documentation has been written up for it.

So I am asking people on here from Victoria who already have thier windows tinted, what they have done and what did thier "tinter" say was legal/illegal...?
Also, is there any new official documentation floating around from the past couple of years in relation to this?

I know this has been done to death, but this thread could clear this up for a lot of new comers to the site, due to tinting becoming pretty popular.

had 15-20% windows on everything I've owned for 15 years at least. have written them off, been assessed at insurers, been impounded and pulled over by fuzz and never once has anyone said a single thing about the windows.. just get what you want, as long as they're not ridiculous 5% or something there is just no problem at all

No new updated means the 2009 legislation is still currently in effect.

In NSW only commercial vehicles including Utes can have dark tint on the rear window and without checking, I think coupes can have it on the rear sides.

The easiest thing to do is ring VicRoad and get the answer, it will save going through posts like mine from people who think they know.
VicRoads will tell you what's legal and you can make the decision from there to comply or not.

Vic Roads won't tell you anything over the phone. You have to put in a request for it to be sent bto you in writing. I went through this a couple of weeks ago for work. But honestly the tinters will put on what ever you ask for. The larger companies know the limits and will be able to advise you.

this is also changing with the new RWC rules with all the testers getting the special meter to test tint. haven't heard anything in practice though.

yeah they test tinting now for a road worthy, and so do the highway patrol, got a major defect over a year ago, for having to dark a tint

In South Australia they have meters for testing the tint at the government testing stations for new s.a. registrations and defects
After being in the industry for a number of years and having plenty of contacts I have found that even putting a "fully legal" tint
on any car which has factory tinted windows, (I do not know of any cars in at least the past 15 years that don't have some degree
of factory tint,) the meter will show that not enough light passes through and it will fail when it is tested with their meters.
(As soon as they see any trace of tint on a window they know it will fail, putting the meter on is just a formal and final way of telling people.)
I worked in a large dealership in Adelaide a little while ago and Tint A Car tried everything they could in lightest tints on new
cars and they all failed because of the factory tinting in the windows.
B.T.W. in S.A. they only test the driver's door and front passenger's door, as far as they are concerned you can paint out all the
rest of the rear windows as long as you have both side mirrors.

VicRoads is ridiculous, so many grey area's in thier legislation, which should by the way be updated every year. My black senator would look great with 20% all round, but if I get pulled over for a random breath test, my exhaust will already draw enough attention, I don't need a big yellow sticker on my windscreen because of my tint as well... Such a dilemma!!! :soap:

Everything i have owned last 5 years has had 15%drivers and pass doors, then 5% back doors and back window and a 5%strip to the bottom of rearveiw mirror on windscreen. Never had any dramas down here... But my tinter says 35% drivers and pass doors then what ever around the rest... Factory privacy glass on subarus etc is 15-20%

Correct Low same over here, except for SCV which can not have limo tint on any windows as its a hire vehicle etc

If you can get a doctors certificate they can also say that you require such a minimum tint if you cart/ transport skin cancer people ie family member with cancer that requires a certain darkness, also if you have epileptic kids like I have I can get doctors permission to have darker than legal tint, but I won't say why

I hate to contradict but I once (ok was 10 years ago) had 20% all round and got defected. Cop pulled me over because the suspension was too low. The car was defected and had to get passed at Regency Park who used a light meter on all 4 side windows. They didn’t care about the back windscreen but the 4 doors had to be stripped back 

Buddy, I don't know what happened to you 10 years ago but I take cars through Regency often. (I am in the trade)
They check both front door windows these days and they certainly do not care about the glass in the rear doors or rear window.
I have taken cars through there dozens of times. ;)
