So my cousin has a VN V6 as a paddock basher and on occasion we tear up his paddock for some fun, he asked me about one of these performance "stage 3 chips" that get around and if it would be worth a try for $20? I told him what the hell it's only a bush bomb car give it a crack.
Well out of my boredom tonight I thought I would try to get some info on them but honestly can't find anything about them other than what the sellers on ebay say, increases the rev limiter more power etc etc...
Whats the deal with these do they actually work at all or is it just some gimmick that only increases the rev limiter?

depends on the chip they are talking about. Some will sell you a 20c resistor that gives the ecu false readings from the map sensor which tricks the ecu into giving it more fuel. Others will sell you a memcal that can be programed with better fuel/timing etc maps. By the sounds of a stage 3 chip it is a memcal and it seems cheap for 20 bucks but it is worth a try.

I guess the question is whether you are prepared to risk lunching an engine for $20?

honestly dont care too much about the car, if we blow it, we'll just have to get another bomb.
Weld the diff, add NO2, have much fun.

As above...
Also make sure the thing stays cool, rig a switch to the thermo fans and keep it on whilst giving it death. Cut the rear of the exhaust off and any glass rear of the windscreen either knock out or tape up as being showered with it isn't fun if anything should go wrong. On the same note a basic half cage or roll bar from the b pillar back.
Had a few bush bashers and we learnt the fun and hard ways

Put a chev badge on it. That will give at least 30kw. :stick:

You can increase the tension on the kickdown cable that was always good for making a vn feel quicker....

ignore cockheads above
i used one of the "burnout" ebay tunes in my v6 gemini skid car, went really well
recently i picked up a vp for our club day and used the "drag" ebay tune from the same guy, bearings let go fairly quick
the difference in acceleration and revs is greatly changed but if the car has already had a hard time dont expect it to last forever
best memcal tune i've found is a mates one that came with a crane "cam/chip package"
below is a video of each, obviously you can hear the vp rattle itself to death, they simply do not like 6000rpm+
