Recently my VZ (Auto) Calais started Chirping like a Cricket whenever it got warmed up
and kept chirping even after the engine was turned off! As you slammed the doors shut it would chirp!
By the time you got it jacked up and under the car the problem would disappear.
Symptom:
Problem occurred at about 140,000km.
Problem appeared approx (1-2min) after car had warmed up - with gradual chirping.
Noise varied in intensity & frequency with increases in engine RPM and duration
of travel, but not road speed.
Cause:
At the rear of the transmission are two flat steel L shaped brackets that bolt onto the exhausts, one of the brackets
had a hairline crack where it bolted onto the exhaust... This left the long piece to act like a big tuning fork
whenever there was enough heat or vibration in the exhausts.
Fix: Remove the bracket and weld up the crack...
