I have a 2005 VZ SS, it seems recently that my cruise control is behaving in a weird manner. Whenever I am driving in the mornings I cannot activate cruise control. I can make it "Active" but it will not engage. In the afternoons, however, it will work fine. This is puzzling me as I have tried this in different conditions also. It just seems that my cruise control is not a "morning device". Any advice would be appreciated.

Ok two things it could be clutch switch if a manual eg the one cosest to the steering column as the VZ has two switches on the Clutch pedal bottom is the inhibitor switch.
Other thing & the more likely one will be the indicator switch assembly they totally hinge on the wiring loom the cruise wires go through the same area. My VZ had the same problem & changed the switch no problem now.

I actually have the same funny issue in mine; in the morning it refuses to turn on unless the stalk is held just right (or so it seems), but works fine i nthe afternoon! did you just change the switch assembly on the indicaor stalk or is it somewhere else?

Mine did the same, I put up with mine for ages then a few people said just get a new stalk, I did and works perfect now.
It takes about 5 mins to changeover and the steering wheel stays on.
Just remove the shroud, unclip the power cable connection and if memory serves me right their is a phillips head screw holding the stalk in place, remove and slide old stalk out and new one in and reverse removal actions.

Seems an odd thing for it to be working intermittantly like that though. In any case I will order a new stalk and let you know how it goes. Thanks.

I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but you are hitting the brake pedal before trying to activate the cruise aren't you?

Do you mean are or are not? In my experiance the cruise control always activates without using the brake. I had a problem before where it wouldnt work because the fuse on the brake lights was blown, but that was the first thing I checked.

As I said before I put up with mine sometimes working sometimes not for months before biting the bullet and buying one.
$64 trade from Holden #92169928.
Sometimes if you switch the cruise control on , off and on again before activating it would sometimes work, but believe me it won't get better and it not a fuse or brake light switch.

ill give the stalk replacement a go then!

I do love how Holden parts are so much cheaper than for imports lol

How did you go, did you replace the stalk?

In my VZ Clubsport, you have to apply the brake before the cruise will engage.
If you try and engage it before hitting the brake pedal, a message comes up on the centre screen telling you to apply the brake.

To switch my system on you just hit the on/off button and the little speedo/cruise symbol comes up on the screen then to engage cruise control you rotate the knob and to disengage you either hit the on/off button once or the brakes.
But the cruise symbol stays on the screen meaning its ready to re-engage unless you push the on/off button a second time.
Never had to touch the brakes to turn the system on, also seems an oxymoron to hit brakes when turning on and activating whilst cruising at a set speed.

No, not yet. My car has been at the panel beaters to get some hail damage repaired, and I just picked it up today. Unfortunately I have to wait for a day off to get the switch. I will let you know the outcome once I purchase and fit it. It's still strange how it will work on demand during the afternoon but not the morning. It's not an intermittant problem its a selective one!!

Yep I was a bit surprised about it too.
My SS-V does the same thing though so I am assuming the boffins had something in mind when they programmed it. In every other respect, my cruise operates in the same manner that you have described.

Here are a couple of pages out of the workshop manual.
I should have been a bit more clear though, you have to hit the brake at some time after starting the car but before engaging cruise, not immediately before engaging the cruise

While thats good to know, it still doesent answer anything about my "selective" problem

This maybe a little thin however what about temperature? Cooler in the morning than in the afternoon affecting it?

Perhaps, but thats still strange as its been through these temperatures in the last 3 years which I have owned it. I will still try the stalk, but i'm still puzzled.

Changed the stalk over and still having troubles. It seems like the cruise control is afraid of the dark....
