Hi everyone,

Was shocked to read in this mornings paper that registration on Utes and light commercials in Queensland is going up by $55.40! in the new financial year. This will affect my rego costs as follows -

Rodeo V6 trayback - $828 up to $883
VY SS ute - $1022 up to $1077

Beyond ridiculous. :( What I dont understand is these vehicles can only seat 2 people, and have a large empty space at the back, yet get slugged more than a a 5 seat sedan or wagon.

Its just case of the government clawing back some $$$$ on the tax advantage utes have for business owners. Once again...Mum and Dad pay.

Yes, CTP is included.

That, and the new Liberal govt capped the rego on class 1 passenger cars. So they have to make up for that by slugging the Ute owners. And apparently Motorcycle rego is going up a bit as well in QLD.

Just out if interest - Do 4x4 wagons like the Landcruiser, Patrol, Pajero get classed as light commercial or passenger vehicles?

**** that. I bought a ute because they look better and for the occasional tip run. Sick of constantly getting 'slugged' because I make more money or buy certain things.

So much for the price freeze from the new Govt! They'll claw back everywhere they can in the early days of being in Govt and then try to justify it hoping that people will forgive and forget!

Perhaps the last Qld State Gov weren't that bad afterall!!! Don't reckon that will be the only area they'll hit either.

I remember when good old Anna came in in QLD my rego went up there by $200 in a year.

It's the same in SA, nearly identically priced yearly cost to register my SSV Ute - in Victoria it was $514 p.a but then again they have a lot more speed cameras.

Well your not doing too bad then. When i was in Sydney (moved last year) i was forking out just shy of $1.2k, and another $1.2k for comprehensive insurance.
Up here just under $1k for rego and about $600 for comprehensive.

Cheers

I'd pay an extra $60-$200 a year if i was allowed to legally highway cruise on 120 without fear of speed cameras, although qld are catching up, i've even seen the sneaky blighters out near clermont and charters towers, (central qld, where there isn't much around, except for the wild life...)

I'm happy to hear that as I will be moving back to Townsville again, beats $1100 and 130p/m for comprehensive here.

i emailed newman and co during the election about this and was told '' all privately owned vehicles up to and including 8cyl, under 4tonnes and not a commercially registered vehicle will not be affected during our first term in office'' a load of shit obviously.

I don't miss paying Qld rego fees one bit. Paid 12mth before I moved to melb and was $1061, paid 12mth in melb $620 :D Best to check all the 3rd party fees as its the only way you can save a couple of bucks.

Qld is screwed and the government shafting the residents to claim a few dollars back to fix monumental **** ups (north/south bypass tunnel, airport link) is just wrong.

here you go

Mr Newman has asked me to thank you for your correspondence from the 10th March.
I would like to acknowledge your comments and appreciate that you have taken the time to raise this issue with us.
Every time Queenslanders fill up their cars, turn on the tap, flick on the lights, buy a new home, pay their car registration, or drive on a toll road they are paying more as a direct result of the economic mismanagement of the Bligh Labor Government.
According to the RACQ, Queensland is the most expensive state to own and operate a motor vehicle. Since 2008, registering a six cylinder car has ballooned by $107.55 to $443.45, and drivers' licences fees will double from $73.70 to $152.50 to cover the cost of yet another Labor bungle – the introduction of the "smart card" licence system.
Added to this, immediately after the last election Premier Bligh broke her promise to not introduce the 9.2 cent a litre fuel tax on Queensland motorists.
The LNP understands Queenslanders are struggling with the cost of living and will act to cut costs.
Over the past few years, Labor have hiked the cost of registration by 30%.
The LNP is planning to freeze family car rego for vehicles up to (and including) 8 cylinders and under 4 tonnes.
If your vehicle is less than 4 tonnes and not registered as a commercial vehicle you will save money and benefit from the LNP’s announcement.
With the state government $85 billon in debt, unfortunately, we cannot afford to freeze motor vehicle registration for all vehicles. If your ute is over 4 tonnes then rego will simply increase with inflation, which is around 2.5-3%.
We can not have a change in Queensland without a change of Government. Only a strong, united LNP team can get Queensland back on track.
Thank you again for taking the time to raise this issue with us, I appreciate you comments on this particular issue.

Kind regards,

Campbell Newman Team.

You think that's bad? My VX SS sedan is registered as a panelvan (light commercial) due to the inability of Qld Transport to register same as a sedan with only 2 seats. Rear seat, inner door handles and all seatbelt mountings removed due to roll-cage.

well to be fair, historically the ute was a work type vehicle. In Adelaide there is a law that still exists that makes it illegal to wear pink pants in public on Sundays. never heard of it being inforced.

I reckon in this case it's about time the utes got together and told the gov to fk right off with that.
Swear the economy and the country are up sh t creek. seems to be more fees, charges, taxes, price rises, and yet I still get the same 2% bullshit payrise every year. I'm actually getting paid less technically than I was 4 years ago if you factor in CPI.

In SA you used to be able to buy your rego for 3,6,9 or 12 months. Recently they changed that to 3 or 12 months only. What crap. Some people cant afford 12 months rego in one hit
and 3 months is way too short + they slug you more for buying 3 month rego periods... Plus they dont even give you a friggin rego sticker either anymore. Friggin morons.

I would of thought it would be 6/12 but hey they went with 3/12 some stupid reason.

Rego stickers are going to be all gone soon, WA & SA already, QLD next with NSW considering it. Once the remaining governments see they can make a million by cutting them out it will happen.

Get rid of the ugly stickers however, how does anyone know what's running around on expired rego by looking at the car?

whiteknight2211
11-07-2012, 04:22 PM
They use a digitizer (camera) on cop cars or a standalone camera (like a speed camera) to see if you're expired, it'll be linked to the registration database - I think I saw one of those cameras yesterday here in Adelaide, it was parked in front of a Holden Colorado and the rest of speed cameras here are inside Camarys.

They tried a similar technology when I was living in Perth, they had a camera scanning number plates and verifying them against police records - they found a few people who had outstanding issues, I believe this has been tried in other states too,.

Interesting. Just stops the police doing a random eye check so I guess people will expect to get away with it. I'm all for ditching the stickers though. Too big (the size they are for obvious reasons) and the colours (again for reasons) can clash with the duco :p. well in Qld anyways.
