View Full Version : Water in intake thanks to car wash. Motor is making a knocking noise.

Currently have a Ve 2010 ssv ute.
6ltr L98 Motor
It has a RAMjet OTR intake fited.
A mate was doing a favour by taking it through a laser car wash.
I have taken it through the same wash 4-5 times and i always turn the motor off.
He left the motor idling as he was unaware of intake being at the front.
As he left the wash drove down the road 50m and motor started knocking.
Pulled over.
I arrived a few hours later and had a look.
Pulled the ramjet off and it had water all through the intake.
Looked into the manifold and its got a white mess of approx 300ml of water sitting in there.
Motor is knocking but running.
Got ute towed home.
What would be the next move?
Appreciate any help in advance!

Change the oil and filter for starters, depending on how much water it got in it. Also before you do that check the dipstick and see what the oil is like, is it all watery?

Bent rod due to hydraulic lock would be where I would look if you believe it's ingested enough water.

time for a stroker dude. They dont like ingesting that amount of water tends to bend things.
Gotta hate that though mate doing a good deed and it going pear shaped
But as stated try draining the oil and see how it spins over by hand but because it is knocking I would say atleast one bent rod

Ingesting water while the engine was running is unlikely to have made it to the sump unless it's managed to break a ring land, pulling the dipstick or looking in the oil filler cap will show water contamination but I doubt your going to find any.

with engine idling in car wash it ingested enuff water to hydraulic lock an engine, i find hard to believe. more like mate gave it more than heaps and killed your motor!

I'd like to think with the throttle body closed while idling it shouldn't have drank so much but if you can see a pool in the intake behind the butterfly its possible.

Me personally I'd pull all the spark plugs out and turn it over and see what comes out. I've had my monaro running through those laser washes plenty of times and it's never effected me (am running an (otr)

Nothing will spit out the plug holes if it's idled even a minute after beginning to knock it will be dry, if your keen to diagnose yourself grab a long assed screw driver and hold it to the head approx over each cylinder, with your ear on the handle you will hear which one/s are noisey that's what I suggest with no specialized tools.

Not sure how I can see the car ingesting that much water at idle with the throttle body closed. Lesson learned though I bet.

Could the water pool in the otr then be sucked in when said mate gives it heaps leaving carwash ?

Here is a video once i arrived.
Seriously looks like 300ml of water down in manifold. Ill get a photo uploaded.

Im blown away by the amount of water sitting in the manifold past the throttle body. Look abouts 300mm.
Im trying to put up a link to youtube but moderator has to allow post.

Yeah if it pooled in the otr and the mate booted it when leaving as you often see at car washes its entirely possible but I'm more surprised at is the amount that collected in there.

Its the one reason I dont use otrs with the filter open straight to everything and anything, even if it seems fine theres always a good cup worth of water each time behind the filter after a wash. The dus is alot safer in this regard I believe.

Are you pressure washing your OTR to get a cup of water behind it?! I've been running the old style alloy OTR on my VY for years and have never even seen the filter get wet after driving through torrential rain or pressure washing the car.
If the car has sucked water in while idling in the wash it would/should have stalled on hydraulic lock if there was that much water in your manifold.

+1. My ute has been through heaps of different car washes. Has a vcm alloy otr and i even went through with no filter once. Never any sign of water in intake. My bet is your mate broke it with some excess right boot. Check your rear tyres ;)

YES bent rod or big end bearing flatend or posably a rist pin bush flatend
if its got 300m of water STILL IN the manifold after running for a while HOW MUCH would you think it ingested to start WITH (HEAPS )
i had a hyd lock on a new 355 carby stroker i had, the bonnet had grills in it letting rain water run in on top of the air cleaner and found its way in to carb round the air cleaner bolt
it knocked so i dropped the sump and found the big end bearing on # 6 cyl was flattened (IT HAD I BEAM FORGED RODS / PISTONS so i changed the bearing and all was good
YOU CANT COMPRESS WATER
only used a car wash once in my life never again

The OP says the intake manifold has heaps of water still inside it,
the water would have not got in there from his mate flogging the engine under normal circumstances,
But... those RAMJET intakes do have a big wide, low hanging intake surface area that could have soaked plenty of water
so I could imagine if it was saturated, it could have injested the water when he drove off.

^^ could be right, we all no how much water gets caught up in the bumpers and shit when we wash out cars, and with the big scoop on the RAMJET it would catch a fair bit and suck it straight in.
I would be dropping the oil, and doing a heap of flushes with shit oil to see if u can clear it out.
otherwise a strip down, clean and inspect would be your next option.
wont no the damage untill u pull it apart.

I've also said this and also said pulling plugs out won't unbend a rod.

I have a ramjet OTR and I've been through the laser carwash at least 20 times while the engine is running. I'm wondering if turning the engine off would actually make a difference, as the water will still (allegedly) be going into the intake...
Not much help, but good luck with it in any case.

Can't see it letting in that much water coz they can't even let enough air in :)

lol drew......
i wouldnt think any OTR would let water in really, (UNLESS the water was spraying directly into it)

that was my thought while reading down to your comment.
if it pooled enough with the throttle shut then as soon as it was opened up a surge would suck into the manifold. although you would think the same would be the case when left off while washing, but then you probably don't gun it directly after washing it.

however water has got in, if it is knocking, sump is off to check what damage and maybe rebuild time.
Like others have said, no oil change, spark plug change/check will do anything for it........
Good luck with it.

If some of the rods have bent im guessing it will need a complete tear down.
If anyone knows of any replacement motors let me know on 0423 009 002
I might keep the damaged motor on the side to build up into a 4wd.

It could be worth telling people where abouts in Australia you live buddy
ie state and city if you are looking to buy something like another engine.
